It’s good to see the Russian bluff being called. Resolve is required, not vacillation. Swiftly frustrating Russian ambitions rightly requires acknowledging that Russian threats , particularly with special weapons, is suicidal for Putler and and his ambitions. He’ll continue with this threat indefinitely, and a reminder that 4 of the 44 nations allied against Russia are nuclear armed and have vast arsenals that will impact within seconds if not minutes of a Russian weapon release.

I agree with what the commentator said, but the systems that they are getting from Germany are exactly what is needed to counter what Russia has in mind next. Those systems are meant to be an umbrella for armed conflicts of armor in open areas to defend them from air attack from helicopters and their version of the A10. They are armored and tracked to be able to travel with the armor and withstand shrapnel and small arms. They need short-range missile, and medium range missile to complete the umbrella. The long-range systems are for the protection of strategic assets. The advantage of supplying them with Soviet equipment is not so much that they are familiar with it. Javelins are not something they are familiar with nor many of the other systems. The advantage is Ukrainians can capture supplies along the way that work in the weapons they have and have instant resupply without being dependent on their own supply lines and the routes into Ukraine from supporting countries.

    • @iffracem

Agreed, with regard to the Gepard, it's not so much training crews to use them, I believe that won't take that long, the Ukrainians have shown themselves to be very adaptable, and very good at taking up new systems. More of an issue is training the maintenance crews to keep them running, that could take months. But heh.. lots of planes/missiles can be downed before major maintenance is required.

And yes I know, the more pressing matter is the energy situation, but Europe is in this together, it's not just Germany which relied on Russian gas etc.
Germany is the biggest money source right now, how much do you think Europe can help Ukraine when Germany becomes the sick man of Europe again like at the beginning of the 2000', how much can Europe help when more countries will have the same problem? I'm sure the other countries will help Germany and they all will help each other now to clean up the big mistake with relying on Russian energy sources and hopefully will take hits in stride.

      Two main problems here.
      1. Modern weapon systems are much more sophisticated, therefore they need much more / longer training. It makes sense to send weapon systems that are easy to learn and maybe similar or same to what is already used.
      2. There are simply not enough modern heavy weapons systems to give without endangering their own defense, if uncle Wowa decides to play it really big. One reason is that right now, Germany has a quarter of its forces bound in NATO defense duties (VJTF).

Some equipment, like those Gepards, are not available instantly though. Everything is checked and serviced as needed before it is sent over. An this is a good thing. Some of the older gear has been decommissioned for decades. They had to throw away half or so of the Strelas for example because they turned out to be to dangerous to be used. War is expensive, what the allies have provided so far in 2 months basically amounts to international pocket change (a single javelin hand held fired missile costs $100,000). What the Ukranians have managed to do with it so far is unbelievable, to beat back one of the largest militaries in the world.
The allies are fighting Russia via Ukraine and not using troops because it is better to spend money now rather than blood later. The trouble is the amounts involved are really very small and the self governed limitations on types of weaponry seems to be controlled by lawyers and not military experts.

There are only a handful of really old people left alive in Germany who stood on the wrong side in WWII. Why are you throwing all Germans under 80 into the same pot with them? They didn't commit crimes against humanity between 33-45, they weren't even born then. They were never on the "wrong side of history". Germans can't choose in which country they are born, young people in Germany are not responsible for the atrocities that their ancestors did. Please be fair towards the generations born after WWII in Germany.

Mr. Scholz should step aside if he's not able to go ahead.
All the MPs from SPD who dream about re-establishing trades with russia after the war may also step aside.

Germany has given Ukraine €7.715 Billion of financial aid in total since 2014 and thus is one of the most helpful countries - financially.
That shows that - even though it wasn't weapons - Germany tried to help Ukraine as much as it could.
This step now is even more incredible as Germans are really careful with sending weapons to countries in war since they had special responsibilities due to WWII.

how does this amount compare to what they’ve “given” Russia for gas, oil, etc. in the same timeframe?

And how much money have Germany spent on Russian gas during the same period?

      @unweeked 2 года назад

@@brushstroke7190 Well, Germany by far wasn't the only country dependent of Russia and almost nobody besides the US did a lot against Russia compared to nowadays.
However, Germany had a dependency of Russian oil of 35% 8 weeks ago (so yes, they gave them a lot of money) and lowered that dependency to just 12% in the last 8 weeks, so I guess you could say that as soon as Russia attacked, Germany tried its best to stop giving Russia money.

@@unweeked They're still providing Rusisa with more money than they are Ukraine. How about simply taxing Russian gas, for every euro sent to Russia for gas 1 europe is spent on some kind of help for Ukraine.
