I wanted to say thank you. I am super new RC anything, and ive been watching videos for about 2 months and finally bought and received my first controller yesterday. Ive watched the whole playlist and a couple of the videos a few times and you really helped me feel so much more comfortable with the menus, some of the options available and really connected a number of dots. I have a ton more to learn but awesome job. IMO it was perfect starting out manually doing a task before you jumped into the configurator, that part alone bridges a huge gap. I do feel I can update to EdgeTX and start to make my way around now that i have a working knowledge of OpenTX.
this is the most straightforward, easy to follow, and quickest ways I have found on all the so called i.e first time user etc canals I'm 67 years old & slow at understanding all these new words & terms so no to your no 2 video

Had the nirvana but the touch screen is a pain in the arse, so easy to stuff settings up.. ive got the lrs set up but still watching vids before i plug it into my radio. Thanks a million I got this far and bound my first quad to this radio. I had to take two time outs so far today. Now if I can get my mode switch and arm disarm , buzzer and turtle mode switch set. I'll be having fun again. Parts of this hobby suck. Pushing Microscopic bind buttons while connecting batteries. It gets a bit overwhelming at times. I see why a lot of people want to get into the hobby and quit 🙄 because it can be very frustrating, tedious at times. I have gotten great deals on brand new shit that people give up on and sell for a loss.
Great video. I have this radio and added 2 quads to it, and I'm about to add a third. I'm curious though... the software in my Tx has a Quad option. I haven't used it yet because I'm really shaky on adding anything without guidance, but I was wondering if there was a video out there that uses the Quad instead of the plane. Thanks!
Hi Steve this is going to be a great series. One thing I discovered from others is that when you use the wizard to make a model for a quad for some reason on the throttle there is a curve. I could not see it in the radio, but in BetaFlight it was there. Hope this Helps

If you are new, do not worry about PIDs. They are great right from the software. Get a handle on everything else first and then come back to PIDs later.
This is a great set of videos...Well Done. I have been flying RC and training others for over 30 years, and I really like how you explain everything thoroughly from start to finish. Your approach and technique are spot on when it comes to relaying your message. I normally fly fixed wing, and I have experimented with FPV in a glider. Recently, I have taken an interest in race and freestyle quads, so I purchased a TX16S, and a TinyHawk2. Your series on these two is perfect. Thanks so much. I have a question about how well does this radio work as a radio? I other words, how does it compare to more expensive name brands when it comes to range, control surface centering, smooth control movement, link stability, and other aspects of a controlling the model. There is no question about how good the Tx setup is, and how much fine tuning can be done for the model set up. I find numerous videos on how to do this. Yours is the best I have found on this, but I haven't found anyone talking about how well this radio works at the field when it is actually controlling the model. I have tried another highly programmable radio, the Flysky i10, and I really liked the programability and tunability of it. However, at the field, it was a horrible controller of my model. So....Considering that the model set up well in the TX16S software, Out at the field, when the model is in the air, how well does this stack up to the job of actually controlling the model?
So, this is what I gather from what I have seen in my reading. A multi protocol radio will not perform as well as a dedicated radio to a specific protocol. How does it compare to a expensive Spektrum or Futaba? Those guys will tell you that there's no way a "cheap Chinese radio can compete". I have never had an expensive radio. I started with a FrSky Taranis and then came to the TX16s. Having said that, i have found it useful to Fine Tune the radio for each of my Receivers. Just one person's opinion. I also don't fly expensive planes. My only plane knowledge comes from Painless360 and I believe that he has given the TX16s his seal of approval.
Thanks T. Steve. I'm not too new on setting up planes on TX16s. But I'm having trouble with my Excalibur. It's a V-tail with separate servos. The setup wizard didn't work. I have one elevator on the elevator channel, and the other on the Aux channel. But only one works. I tried to use aux as a source, but it's not on the list. Can you help?
So good, I had to hit the subscribe button! Do you know if the TX16s is able to display the drones battery voltage on that nice big screen? Maybe link a voice notification when the voltages gets to certain lower limit?
Got a 2nd hand quad in a trade with a flysky x6b receiver, trying to bind to the tx16s , does the quad need lipo power? Or should it enter bind through just usb power connected to pc? I just get a slow flashing red on usb, haven’t even bought a lipo as wanted to be sure quad was operational before spending any money.

Figured it out, it was a flipping cable, was a simple charging cable and not a data. To the rest of you beginners, make sure that you are using data cable and not a simple charging usb-mini usb cable. Now I can continue with the set up, thanks Steve for very informative videos!!!
Hello Sir!!! I have a problem and can't seem to resolve it... I some how I deleted the model out of the model settings.... Al I have is planes and helicopters... Lost the model I created too... I was trying to create a new model for my second drone... Is there a way to factory reset like it was brand new from the manufacturer? So I can start over??? I'm so lost and confused had to go back to cheap controller.....
Question, help please! I just got the TX16S and im trying to bind to my iFlight Green hornet. Why does my TX16S not have the "FrSky D8" option for me the closest i can get is "FrSky X D8"
I was able to wire the frsky r xsr receiver to my dys f4 pro v2 fc, bound it to my radiomaster and set it all up in betaflight no problems. Then went through the same process with same fc and receiver but on that one it’s not showing up in betaflight. I’ve searched multiple videos and unable to find out why. Help

Just an FYI for assigning model pictures. If you go to system, SD card, images you will see a pic and a name to select. Choose assign bitmap to add that model you your model bitmap page. Sometimes the names afent easy enough to pick a picture.]

Thanks for this vid series, not long ago I brought a second hand Horus x12s. I've been playing with it to learn this opentx firmware. My biggest problem i have when setting up a model, is I can only do it under glider mode. I can not select airplane. This really limits alot of what I can do, as I'm a fixed wing flyer. Is there something I'm missing when trying to update the firmware. It's also loaded with EU firmware, Which I dont need as um in New Zealand, not part of the EU. I cant seem to be able to reselect non EU. Please any ideas would be fantastic
EU issue: In Companion, have you gone to Settings --> Settings --> Build Options and selected the correct option for EU? Model Setup: I've used the wizard to set up both a glider and a plane and both still offer a way to assign AETR. For anything after that, you can go into Inputs to assign the switches, and then go to Mixes to map those switches to channels on your receiver. Then Outputs to make any necessary adjustments to your endpoints.
I followed the steps from beginning to end, when I get to scrolling through the modes I don't see the Frsky by itself. I'm seeing Frsky X, 2, etc. is there something I'm missing or doing incorrect?
I am thinking of replacing my Spektrum DX6 with the TX16s. I cant find out anywhere what the max model memory is. My DX6 has a capacity of 250 and I have over 50 models on it. Cn you help? Cheers.
So I added a new Tinyhawk 2 to my radio, in BF the receiver is picking up and moving. But when I disconnect it won't do a dam thing! I've got an Emax Cinewhoop bound to my radio also so could I be having a switch conflict I can work around? Going crazy here, I've built and deleted all new switches 5 times now.

Hi nice video. I followed your instructions but when I try to select D8 or D16 on FRSKY I get a warning that says " ID used in Delta Quad (RTN) " seeing as my radio is brand new, no model set ups do you hae any ide what this is please? Thanks
From your home screen, long press on the barrel on the right and then select "Model Select". It would appear that you have a model called Delta Quad or you wouldn't get that message. If you are absolutely sure you don't have a model in there, see if this helps: github.com/opentx/opentx/issues/4978
@@TahoeSteve I have three models. Plane Heli and Quad. I thought they were categories. I bought the TX16s new and am adding my first model (a mobula v7) I suppose I could delete the pre exisitng quad but surely I should be able to have more than one model. All of which are using FRSKY receivers?

when adding a new model with the same receiver, you get an ID already in use error, Do you just then chnge the receiver No to the next one or do you have to use a specific no in the range please?
hey I'm a self admitted idiot so I wanna firstly thank for your videos. it's taken way more hours than I wanna admit of watching and about a year to get a blade inductrix in the air! Ive used spectrum and I wanted to not be so limited . I'm also trying to build my first quad and this was gonna allow me to follow along w bardwell on his budget build. I say all this to say I went to fly the sim yesterday and dropped my tx16 right on it's face. I broke a switch, I hear rattling and it says emergency when I turn it on. who says bad shit don't happen to good people ?!?! shit your talking about pids. it never ends LOL ANYWAYS LAST SWITCH I TRIED TO FIX ON A SpeKTRUM AND IT WENT ABOUT AS WELL AS FART IN A SPACESUIT. should have sent it to horizon. I JEVER EVEN GOT THE GUTS TO FLASH the firmware before I broke it the only radio out of the 5 I have broke in the last year and a half makes the fact I used a rtf dx4 without any incident for 4 years feel a lot like Charlie Brown when the cloud is following him around . anyways are there people that fix em ? I didn't see anything in the documentation. or do know any thing about if that emergency screen coming up is even fixable. I most likely will destroy it by trying but at worst I end up with a transmitter that stilll broke. LOL ANY I🤣NFO U HAVE WILL BE greatly appreciated. caps unintentional)
Does this mean if I have my radio setup as aetr that I need to plug my ail chan 1,ele 2,throttle 3 and rudder 4 into my receiver in that Configuration?
I was practicing my hovering in my garage and adjusting the trims when this happened, The FC is not seeing signal from the receiver. Can anybody tell me how this happens and how to trouble this. I didn't make any changes to the configuration. I don't understand what is going on. It was working fine hovering up and down. I would really appreciate any help as I am just learning about this. Thank you.
So i'm here for the series watching them all now, but I started with the betaflight lua scripts and i thought i did everything right but my receiver seems to be stuck on an initialising screen! I think what i did wrong was i didn't overwrite the files, instead i merged and kept both. Any idea how i can fix this?
@@TahoeSteve yeah, noob misunderstanding, I read under some of the closed issues on GitHub that it has to be bound to a quad to work, I actually don't have a quad yet. Just trying to practice on a simulator and have been taking these past few months to absorb as much as I can to get into this hobby! This is a fast growing hobby and a lot of people don't make videos so understandable from a beginners perspective... Great work with your videos! I just got Inav and Yaapu Maps on my radio but it took a lot of reading on GitHub, pretty sweet though to be able to see a map on the screen! I've spent the past 4 months researching and I still have a little bit left to learn, almost there... I'm living in China so I can pick and choose any product straight from the manufacturer and everything is in stock, some things are cheaper, and flying is not so strictly restricted so I can't wait to capture some good footage!
@@TahoeSteve I've also figured out how to disable the T-1 to t-6 trim switches in flight mode screen, and turned them into useful switches on logical switches, so thinking about customising the Incremental switch for bf to one of those later, really cool how you taught me how to customise everything clearly to where I understand what It is
by the type of receiver I was using. FrSky receivers are as follows: D16 for X-series receivers, e.g. X4R-SB, XSR, X8R D8 for D- and V-series receivers, e.g. D4R-II, D8R-II+, V8FR-II, VD5M, etc
Tahoe Steve well I got that fixed. I guess it does it when props are off. But now my problem is when I connect to beta flight i can’t get the motors to turn on. If I unplug it from beta flight and connect battery it works perfectly. I don’t know what I did wrong.
@@cityoftrees9953 BF Motors tab has a option to make sure the motors DON'T come on unexpectedly. This is a good thing. You can flip the switch so they do turn on.

Literally just got this controller. Made sure the 18650 batteries were fully charged and in the right polarity,,tried turning on the controller and all it does it flash the green light on the button. Literally complete noob at all of this and don't know what to do. Can't find anything on the manuals or the internet that will tell me what the green light means.
If you wish to teach beginners, the first thing to remember is: (1) minimizing what a beginner to know, (2) making it short and concrete, (3) explaining the basics in a concrete way, and (4) reducing all unnecessary materials. This is the basic teaching skills. As a result, this is a poor video for a very beginning beginners. If you like it, you are not perhaps a real beginners.

How do you bind sbus flysky to the radiomaster. I can’t do it at all. And the guy I bought the drone from didn’t tell me what receiver he used. He just put sbus flysky

Thanks for this vid series, not long ago I brought a second hand Horus x12s. I've been playing with it to learn this opentx firmware. My biggest problem i have when setting up a model, is I can only do it under glider mode. I can not select airplane. This really limits alot of what I can do, as I'm a fixed wing flyer. Is there something I'm missing when trying to update the firmware. It's also loaded with EU firmware, Which I dont need as um in New Zealand, not part of the EU. I cant seem to be able to reselect non EU. Please any ideas would be fantastic
EU issue: In Companion, have you gone to Settings --> Settings --> Build Options and selected the correct option for EU?
Model Setup: I've used the wizard to set up both a glider and a plane and both still offer a way to assign AETR. For anything after that, you can go into Inputs to assign the switches, and then go to Mixes to map those switches to channels on your receiver. Then Outputs to make any necessary adjustments to your endpoints.
I followed the steps from beginning to end, when I get to scrolling through the modes I don't see the Frsky by itself. I'm seeing Frsky X, 2, etc. is there something I'm missing or doing incorrect?
How do you know which frysky receiver to choose and what channel is for what ?

I am thinking of replacing my Spektrum DX6 with the TX16s. I cant find out anywhere what the max model memory is. My DX6 has a capacity of 250 and I have over 50 models on it. Cn you help? Cheers.
Don't know the specifics but I started with a DX6 before moving to Taranis about 8 years ago. Learned OpenTX and never looked back.

So I added a new Tinyhawk 2 to my radio, in BF the receiver is picking up and moving. But when I disconnect it won't do a dam thing! I've got an Emax Cinewhoop bound to my radio also so could I be having a switch conflict I can work around? Going crazy here, I've built and deleted all new switches 5 times now.
Check your arming flags in betaflight. Also try re calibrating your Accelerometer

I'm following your video on voice commands but my TX16S only has the arco not the angle ,horizon for the 3 position switch or the Buzz for option.
You have to go to your modes tab in Betaflight/emuflight or whatever setup you have and add angle and horizon mode

Check the Arming Disable Flags on the Betaflight Setup screen.

Hi nice video. I followed your instructions but when I try to select D8 or D16 on FRSKY I get a warning that says " ID used in Delta Quad (RTN) " seeing as my radio is brand new, no model set ups do you hae any ide what this is please? Thanks
From your home screen, long press on the barrel on the right and then select "Model Select". It would appear that you have a model called Delta Quad or you wouldn't get that message. If you are absolutely sure you don't have a model in there, see if this helps: github.com/opentx/opentx/issues/4978
@@TahoeSteve I have three models. Plane Heli and Quad. I thought they were categories. I bought the TX16s new and am adding my first model (a mobula v7) I suppose I could delete the pre exisitng quad but surely I should be able to have more than one model. All of which are using FRSKY receivers?

when adding a new model with the same receiver, you get an ID already in use error, Do you just then chnge the receiver No to the next one or do you have to use a specific no in the range please?

hey I'm a self admitted idiot so I wanna firstly thank for your videos. it's taken way more hours than I wanna admit of watching and about a year to get a blade inductrix in the air! Ive used spectrum and I wanted to not be so limited . I'm also trying to build my first quad and this was gonna allow me to follow along w bardwell on his budget build. I say all this to say I went to fly the sim yesterday and dropped my tx16 right on it's face. I broke a switch, I hear rattling and it says emergency when I turn it on. who says bad shit don't happen to good people ?!?! shit your talking about pids. it never ends LOL ANYWAYS LAST SWITCH I TRIED TO FIX ON A SpeKTRUM AND IT WENT ABOUT AS WELL AS FART IN A SPACESUIT. should have sent it to horizon. I JEVER EVEN GOT THE GUTS TO FLASH the firmware before I broke it the only radio out of the 5 I have broke in the last year and a half makes the fact I used a rtf dx4 without any incident for 4 years feel a lot like Charlie Brown when the cloud is following him around . anyways are there people that fix em ? Does this mean if I have my radio setup as aetr that I need to plug my ail chan 1,ele 2,throttle 3 and rudder 4 into my receiver in that Configuration?
AETR Setup is as follows:
1 is AIL
2 is ELE
3 is THR
4 is RUD
I was practicing my hovering in my garage and adjusting the trims when this happened, The FC is not seeing signal from the receiver. Can anybody tell me how this happens and how to trouble this. I didn't make any changes to the configuration. I don't understand what is going on. It was working fine hovering up and down. I would really appreciate any help as I am just learning about this. Thank you.
Check your Ports screen in BF and double check your actual connections to the FC
Can I bind FCC version and EU-LBT version to TX16S?
So i'm here for the series watching them all now, but I started with the betaflight lua scripts and i thought i did everything right but my receiver seems to be stuck on an initialising screen! I think what i did wrong was i didn't overwrite the files, instead i merged and kept both. Any idea how i can fix this?
was your quad powered by lipo when you tried to initialize the betaflight lua script?
@@TahoeSteve yeah, noob misunderstanding, I read under some of the closed issues on GitHub that it has to be bound to a quad to work, I actually don't have a quad yet. Just trying to practice on a simulator and have been taking these past few months to absorb as much as I can to get into this hobby! This is a fast growing hobby and a lot of people don't make videos so understandable from a beginners perspective... Great work with your videos! I just got Inav and Yaapu Maps on my radio but it took a lot of reading on GitHub, pretty sweet though to be able to see a map on the screen! I've spent the past 4 months researching and I still have a little bit left to learn, almost there... I'm living in China so I can pick and choose any product straight from the manufacturer and everything is in stock, some things are cheaper, and flying is not so strictly restricted so I can't wait to capture some good footage!
@@TahoeSteve I've also figured out how to disable the T-1 to t-6 trim switches in flight mode screen, and turned them into useful switches on logical switches, so thinking about customising the Incremental switch for bf to one of those later, really cool how you taught me how to customise everything clearly to where I understand what It is

How do you know to click on d8 protocol when your receiver didn’t say d8?
by the type of receiver I was using. FrSky receivers are as follows: D16 for X-series receivers, e.g. X4R-SB, XSR, X8R
D8 for D- and V-series receivers, e.g. D4R-II, D8R-II+, V8FR-II, VD5M, etc

Tahoe Steve well I got that fixed. I guess it does it when props are off. But now my problem is when I connect to beta flight i can’t get the motors to turn on. If I unplug it from beta flight and connect battery it works perfectly. I don’t know what I did wrong.
@@cityoftrees9953 BF Motors tab has a option to make sure the motors DON'T come on unexpectedly. This is a good thing. You can flip the switch so they do turn on.

I bought it at a local store so I don't have a link.
Literally just got this controller. Made sure the 18650 batteries were fully charged and in the right polarity,,tried turning on the controller and all it does it flash the green light on the button. Literally complete noob at all of this and don't know what to do. Can't find anything on the manuals or the internet that will tell me what the green light means.

If you wish to teach beginners, the first thing to remember is: (1) minimizing what a beginner to know, (2) making it short and concrete, (3) explaining the basics in a concrete way, and (4) reducing all unnecessary materials. This is the basic teaching skills. As a result, this is a poor video for a very beginning beginners. If you like it, you are not perhaps a real beginners.
