Bruvnor, if you haven't ever seen this Gwen Stefani, your crush is incomplete. You're only half-crushed. You're about to be smooshed. She's iconic. You'll see.
The song was about Gwen Stefani and her breakup w/ the bass player of No Doubt - Tony Kanal (he's also the guy in the beginning w/ the orange)... they had been dating since high school since he joined her brother Eric Stefani's band No Doubt (Gwen was the female singer - the male singer was John Spence, but he tragically took his own life) Going into No Doubt's album #2 'Tragic Kingdom' in 1995, Tony Kanal ended the relationship w/ Gwen and her brother Eric also announced he was leaving the band... So, the album had quite a few songs about Tony 😂including 'Happy now'... 'Spiderwebs' ... 'Sunday morning' ... 'Excuse me mister'... etc. "Don't speak" was the subtle song on the record and the biggest hit single... 'Tragic Kingdom' broke big in 1996 and the album sold 8 million copies in the US... a 'ska' album - a mix of reggae and rock. Gwen and Tony remained friends and the 2 co-write a lot of the No Doubt songs.
I lived in Garden Grove Ca from 1984-2018 The Drummer's Best Friend lived on the other side of the street and the band would come over and practice in his garage. Gwen went to a high with several of my Girls Scouts so when they were practicing I would have my 6 kids and my whole Girl Scout Troop go hang out and sit on blankets outside the garage to listen to them. Just a group of kids who was trying to get a band started. Love to see how a bunch of local kids were able to make it in the music world. I have know a lot of talented kids that don't. Lots of memories of times gone by.
"I took a trip to Garden Grove. It smelled like Lou Dog inside the van, aw yeaaaaahh..." My buddy Doug's old man lived in Garden Grove. Better vibes than Bakersfield & Barstow, lol
@@johnm7698 I always enjoyed that song. Bought the single not longer after buying the Don’t Speak single. Back in the days when buying a single was probably a week or two of pocket money.
Bruv, this is a killer song. It was originally a love song, but Gwen Stefani rewrote the lyrics almost completely after her breakup with the band's bass player Tony Kanal. Imagine having to play that song live, knowing it’s about your breakup with her. 😢 At least it has a killer bass line.
No Doubt's "Don't Speak" is a song about the pain of loving someone more than they love you, and the fear of them realizing it. The song is about two breakups in Gwen Stefani's life: her relationship with bassist Tony Kanal, and her relationship with her brother and bandmate Eric Stefani. Here are some other details about the song: Origin The song was originally more of a love song, and included an accordion. Gwen's brother wrote most of the song, but Gwen changed the lyrics to fit her life. Overhauls The song went through many changes, including at the request of the band's producer, Matthew Wilder. Release The song was released on No Doubt's third album, Tragic Kingdom. It was initially only released in export territories, as the band's established fanbase didn't like it. Video The video for "Don't Speak" is about the band splitting up, as a way to make the subject matter more sad than a normal breakup.
No doubt is west coast Ska (3rd generation) which has touches of rockabilly, punk, rock, reggea and pop. The west coast Ska scene was linked to skate and surf culture. It is the same influences you hear in sublime.
I'm the first time here online, but I watch your reactions every day. I'm an old rockman from Poland... :) Don't Speak was a great hit! No Doubt... :)
This song was one of the anthems of the 90s. Their songs Im just a girl, and Sunday morning is great too. Another massive hit was Natalie Imbruglia - Torn.
The 90s had some talented female rockers. From "No Doubt" with Gwen Stefani to "Garbage" with Shirley Manson, "The Cardigans" with Nina Persson, Hole with Courtney Love and solo artists like Alanis Morissette, Jewel Kilcher, Sheryl Crow and Natalie Imbruglia. Edit: I'd even add Reba McEntire too even though she's a country singer, she had a couple of songs that straight up rocked with "Fancy" and "The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia".
Saw No Doubt live in the late 90's, Tragic Kingdom tour. I was in the front row against the fence with a buddy, 17 years old and discovering Gwen 🥰 Still one of my best concert experiences ever.
This song reached its peak popularity right when my first serious girlfriend broke up with me and she was a huge No Doubt fan. With its constant play on the radio and MTV, it was inescapable and it broke my heart every damn time I heard it.
One of their most underrated songs is "Simple Kind of Life" That's the first No Doubt song I ever heard and probably still my favorite. I think Gwen is exquisite in her pink hair.
Her stage presence with No Doubt was amazing. We saw them with Bush in 1997 @ Blockbuster Rockfest at Texas Motor Speedway with a ton of other bands. No Doubt killed it, and so did Bush. It was one of the largest concerts on record. One of the best concerts I ever went to back in the day.
When I`m right, she wrote this song about her relationship to the Bassplayer in this video, my honour to him, cause he is the black sheep in this song, but so professional to play the bass to it
Let’s not forget Gwen was also married to Gavin Rossdale from Bush, she met him just after the album Tragic Kingdom was released! Won’t lie, my heart broke when I learned they were divorcing. Lol, the first time I was affected by a celebrity relationship
This album was a staple in my rotation of CDs in the 90's - Top Notch 90's. Tool, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, No Doubt, the Cranberries, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Alanis Morisette... Throwbacks on throwbacks; 90's music was my life's soundtrack
Classic broken heart song. Love it as much today as back then...ahh the music of my college years!! Its about her breakup with the drummer in the band. And Just a girl, another gem. Oh and every girl wanted her abs!
I’ve watched many of your videos now. And it nearly brings me tears that you’ve found comfort in music rather than drugs, booze or so many other bad things out there! Peace and love to you my BFAM!! ☮️💕
She is singing about the bass player in the band, she used to be with Gavin Rossdale also from Bush, you got to do Bush - Machinehead you should like it, and maybe No Doubt I'm Just A Girl , Spiderwebs , Sunday morning
If you want see her on stage watch "Just a Girl" Live at Tragic Kingdom. People always talk about great front men, but Gwen has the entire crowd in the palm of her hand for the whole song.
I saw No Doubt live Warped Tour 2000, they played right before Green Day. They had great energy on stage. I highly suggest Spiderwebs and Just a Girl, amazing songs. Gwen was such an inspiration to us young girls growing up back in the 90s. Representation matters and seeing a badass woman fronting a rock/ska band was so cool.
In the early days Gwen's older brother Eric was the keyboardist but after the second album he left to become an animator on The Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy.
Imagine having to play bass in a band and have your ex singing this song for 10 years. This song is about Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal their relationship feel apart at the beginning of their success.
No Doubt has a nice cover of great song It's My Life from Talk Talk. I hope one day you'll react to it in both versions. Talk Talk made some great melo pop songs in 80s. Gwen also made a hit Cool from her solo album in 2004 or so.

One of those tunes where you are dating a band member and break up and now the bass player has to hear this tune directed at him at every show and it’s also a radio hit. 🙃
God this song is iconic of the mid 90s. It was HUGE. Just a Girl, Spiderweb are two others that were massive. Great band with an amazing sound, and her voice is just perfection. This one may be more mellow, but her voice is ALWAYS full of such power, and the simplicity of the music is actually really powerful too. Strong chord progression, driving beat.

I from OC. In s Southern California. I remember seeing No Doubt and Sublime playing at clubs. S.D. , Bad Religion, The Adolescent's, D.I. , The Vandals. Great music
That song was written for the bass player in her band. They were a couple and went their separate ways, but stayed friends and bandmates. You see when at one point she sings right to him face to face.
All the suggestions are great here. Excuse me Mr, and Hella Good are also amazing. Oi to The World is a great ska Christmas song. Ex-Girlfriend, and New also bops

Yes, No Doubt Gwen is God tier
If you really want a crush..just a girl by no doubt

She was married to Gavin Rossdale who was the lead singer of the band Bush who you should also listen to.
Yeah. I recommended several times. Swallowed by bush.
I really like their song "Mouth", but I'm partial to the Stingray remix.
But I think this song is about when she was in a relationship with bandmate bassist
Comedown by Bush!
