My step-father's bike was stolen recently. He realized after being there a half hour or so that he'd forgotten to take the key out of the lock. He ran outside, and sure enough, the bike was gone. The lock however, was not. It had been cut in half, key still inside.

Some told me I had to lock the bike to an immovable object but could not tell me what that was. Some said I had to use a "good" lock but would not provide me with examples. In fact, noone could answer my questions, so I bought a 200,-€ ABUS Granit lock, lock my bite to the least movable objects I can find and - most important! - pay attention that there are always other bikes around that are easier to steal. So far, it works.

I used to work with a guy who would say "A good engineer can build for a nickel what a bad engineer can build for a quarter."
When a product manager comes to you and wants you to design something so cost optimized it takes a fair amount of skill and creativity to produce a marketable result. I am an electronics engineer in the process control and factory automation field. Our customers will pay more for quality. However when you are trying to market a product to consumers I don't think they fully appreciate how hard it can be to meet the cost targets. Many deride engineers for making things cheaply, but it's management that tells you what your budget it.
It is not easy to build something so cheaply. Cost, time to market and quality; pick two.

Little tip for anyone who is new since he didn’t mention it in the video this time: Normally dimple locks like this have to be picked with specialized dimple picks or rakes. They are readily available but a bit less common depending on the country. They differ from a standard pick in that they have a sharp L shape and are 4-5 times smaller. A dimple lock being able to be picked by a standard pick inserted sideways is abhorrently bad, even if it’s LPL. It’s like if you have a screen door but the holes are big enough that you can stick your fingers through.

I remember working in a bicycle shop, people always ask what's the best locks..
and I would tell them, "A thief will break through Anything given the time".
"If you want something that will protect it for a few minutes, any lock here will do.. if you want a good lock for work or home, go the a Hardware shop, get a thick Tough chain + Lock + Chain cover" (a couple of layers of bike tubes can work great as chain cover)
IF its too much of a hassle for a thief, they'll usually leave it for easier things.
BUT you do have some that will follow you around, and learn when and how they can break the defense... there's almost nothing you can do about those kinds of thieves.
    real story:
my friend got his motorbike stolen because he parked it to the same light post every night, he used multiple locks and a couple of chains...
3 guys came with a pickup, rammed the light post knocking it over, threw the bike in the back with all the chains and locks still attached and drove off.
it was less then 1 minute and they were gone.
surveillance showed the same truck driving past his bike or where it was parked for 3 days at different times.

Yes, it just like breaking into a jewelry store. You don't need the skill to open the store's lock, you just need the skill to steal a car. Two cars, preferably, as the police will be looking out for the first car, as the thieves will often do their "smash & grab" in front of CCTV cameras and sometimes even a live audience.

Okay folks, step 1. is to (I should say obviously) crack the can and drink the beer. I typically only do my videos half in the bag, and I think that this is a good way to get started.
Step 2. is that we rip the can in half, being mindful of any sharp corners, then we peel the rings off. We’ll fold the can halves until one is a completely flat 50 thousandths thick turning bar, and the other is a standard pick.
We’ll next take our twig, because step 3. is to smoke it. So I’ll insert it into my mouth (like so), and light it with my zippo (available on covert instruments with all of our other tools).
Step 4. is to insert the turning beer-bar into the car’s window on the driver side door. This is a well known fact, but obviously car manufacturers literally cut corners, as these are the weakest part of a car door’s window.
We then apply a modest amount of tension until we can lift the window out of place slightly, exposing the vulnerable corners.
For step 5., you’ll want to wrap your striking hand in your t-shirt (as I’ve done here). I usually wear a non-white color to avoid ruining it from too much blood. We swing the pick into the weak window corner, aligning it on the X and Y axes with the door to ensure the greatest transfer of force.
Okay, you’ll see that was pretty easy folks. This window shattered without even putting up a fight. In my next video, watch out for part two as I show you how to hotwire a 2019 Chevy Camero over the sound of police sirens. All without even putting out your twigarette.

I think it really depends, this is fine for locking up a regular cheap bike, it ends up a middle road between the cheap cable locks and a really high end lock. I wouldn't use it on a 500+ dollar bike but for your cheap walmart bike it is fine. I mean yeah a welded heavy duty chain lock is great for storing the bike at home but that isn't something you want to carry around with you not to mention a decent one could easily cost more than many peoples bikes. When I was out on my bike I typically used a combo of a folding lock and a lightweight cable lock since the weight reduction was more important. The thing is most people stealing bikes are going to be using bolt cutters or angle grinders and even a cheap chain actually works well against that. You only have to be more annoying to open than the next bike over.

Speaking as someone who had never seen a dimple lock before watching your videos for the last year, the average person might think it is so unusual that it *must* be superior to defeat, never even considering the plastic and soft metal make of the lock. I can't help but think of the age old misunderstanding *you taught me* that a lock's use, despite its cheapness, dissuades most people's desire too break it.

I wouldn't use that style of knife for self defense. There is no meaningful finger guard which means if you were to stab using the knife and hit something hard (like bone), your grip would likely slip and you would slice open the skin/tendons on your first few fingers. A better choice would have a positive finger stop to prevent your hand from sliding onto the blade.
