Cathy, you've been a blessing to me. My husband passed away this past Dec(14th). I've been having a very hard time cooking for one without wasting a lot of food by making my recipes in the oven. Heating a full size oven for a small dish, cranking on the broiler, mine is in the bottom of the stove and very hard for this 70 yr old with back issues to access. I jumped around YT and came across your channel. I bought the Cosori 5.8 qt air fryer and absolutely LOVE it. I followed your directions to make steak and baked potatoes and they both turned out WONDERFUL ! I am finally going to enjoy cooking again. I can, bake and love to cook but hate to waste food , especially with the cost of food today. You have a loyal follower here !
❤ So glad you found a good way to nourish your body even through a very hard time. Praying that God floods you with peace & comfort. ❤
Very sad to hear about your loss wish you a lot of strength
FYI, when you cook frozen veggies in an air fryer OR a microwave you are already steaming them! Without putting water in the bowl/basket. The frozen veggies have water in them so when you heat/microwave them, the water in them turns to steam and does the cooking. The amount of water you're putting in takes FOREVER to boil and produce steam. You are actually making it take longer to cook by ADDING water. You need to pre-heat the water to bring it to a boil for fresh veggies.
Yep, you are right abt frozen veggies in the air fryer.
And interesting thought to put LESS water in... makes sense! The 2nd and 3rd foods I did, I put very hot water in the bottom of the basket. Would be interesting to see the difference had I put LESS water in the bottom. Thanks for the tips!
Or rinse the veggies and leave them WET and cook for 300 for ten min? The water on the veggies just like with frozen ones ?
This is tip of the year for me so far. Seems obvious now lol. Im off to buy some frozen broccoli to try!
you’re right about them having water already but unless they have a lot of ice stuck to them, I’ve had to add A LITTLE water before, just to make sure they’re cooked evenly and I don’t get dry/charred spots (unwanted)
I think my concern with steaming in the airfryer would be the steam/moisture impacting the internals of the fryer? You aren't supposed to submerge the fryer itself in water to clean, so would putting water in it to steam potentially damage it? Just a thought. I think microwave "steaming" works pretty well, so I will probably stick with that. I definitely appreciate your videos, though! Thanks 🙂
Steaming on my gas stovetop is pretty quick, and I do it often. Will stick with that. But thank you for those tests. Will keep my airfryer busy with all the other goodies. Just ordered your cookbook. CANNOT WAIT for Monday!
I like adding a steam component to certain foods. Like perogies, asian dumplings etc. I add about 4 tbsp of water to the basket. It helps add a bit of steam to them to cook on the inside before the outside dries out before it gets to the crispy stage. Kind of like certain potstickers say to put them in a skillet with a bit of water. I also do it for corn on the cob.
Oh yes I’ll have to try that! 👍
You want the outside of your Pierogis crispy?
I'm Polish, the only time it should be crispy is if you fry it. Of course my Great Aunts and Uncles were old fashioned. LOL
I’m so glad you’re trying this as I’ve been thinking about doing this with fresh brussel sprouts to avoid having to par boil them before airfrying them. So you just needed to do one more! I love you anyway! Btw, I made a spatchcock chicken in my Cosori last night. I modified your timing for whole chicken from your cookbook down to 25 minutes, flip and 5-10 minutes on the other side. OMG! Yummy! I have another old Hungarian recipe for chicken I’m going to see how it comes out in the airfryer. If it comes out well, I’ll let you know.
Oh I love that, Karen! Sorry I didn't do raw brussels. :) If you test it, let me know how it goes!
When Saturday comes around, my first thought is I will get to see what you have come up with this week. Thank you for doing this research for us, and keeping it real.
Hi Cathy. Thanks for the trial but I will stick to the mic for the steamer veggies & use my AF for the rest of the meal. Keep up the good work. You are the best!!
I've just started adding a little water to my air fryer for some of my fresh vegetables, however I just use a small ramekin with a little water, heat the ramekin with the air fryer for two minutes then add the vegetables. I just do that to get it started, I remove the ramekin once they are mostly done and then finish it off to crisp up the vegetables a little more. I have a dual blaze and do this without the grate.
I have the Cosori dual and when I warm up pizza delivery I put a small piece of ice (like half of a cube or a few chips of a cube) and then put the pizza on the tray and warm up the pizza and it comes out just like it taste when it's delivered. Actually a little fresher.
You've been my air fryer hero ever since I got mine. I think however that a dedicated steamer would be the way to go. You could be doing your veggies properly while using the air fryer for it proper purpose.
I already have a bamboo basket for steaming but was wondering if it also can work with an air fryer. It is interesting and maybe needs less power and water. Maybe i will try it with both myself.
I have never tried to steam veggies in my airfryer most certainly the microwave is the fastest and easiest way to go. Thanks for sharing. Oh but I will be trying the asparagus. Have a Fabulous day. Sherry
Hi Cathy, at the moment I‘m excited to get your cookbook- unfortunately it takes some time to arrive here in Germany - but I‘ve watched your tutorials here on RUclips so I‘ve already done a few of your recepies - thanks a lot for them. But I don‘t think I will steam anything in the Airfryer because my instant pot does it so much better👍🏻
Did you see where Cosori is recalling some models
I am so glad I found this! Also got conflicting Google results but I want to make super moist egg cups in my air fryer. Thank you for trying this and using different options!!
I think that this is a good thing to learn about, but I am not sure how this would be any more efficient than using a steamer basket and a pot of water? Does it produce a different texture or flavor? Is it a much quicker way to steam? All to say that I found this informative but for myself, I will air fry my steak or chicken and use the stove top for steaming vegetables... I guess to each their own. I really appreciate that you tested it out and give the information.
Thanks Heidi, it was a common question I'd get, so I decided to make a video on it!
There's also people who have no stove, in an RV or something who use their fryer for everything. My friend has to travel to hotels for medical appointments that don't have kitchens and she can't afford to buy all her food. She takes her air fryer and uses that to do some basic stuff that easy to clean, like bread for toast or cheese sandwiches, small meals in containers she prepared at home etc. Now she can try some veggies!
So glad you like the tool. I use mine nearly everyday
Hi Kathy, I love watching your Vlogs, very interesting and love to see your children involved too! I think I would use the Microwave for veggies to be honest but definitely worth knowing that you could use your airfryer for this also! 🥰🥰🥰
Hi Kathy, do you know about Recalled Cosori air fryer Models CP158-AF, CS158-AF, CAF-P581-AUSR and CAF-P581S-AUSR (Light Gray) ?
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
I think I might try putting a piece of foil over the veggies (with a rack to hold it down) to keep the steam at the bottom.
Did it work?
I have a Tefal 3 in 1 Air Fryer which has a water tank and a steam setting, great for veg and fish.
I have the Dual Blaze. I have just started to test with steaming. But only with Pork Chop and Chicken Breast so far. I have found that preheat and hot water gives the best result.
Oh interesting, I hadn't thought of steaming my meat. Although, I suppose it's a similar result when I have chicken with a marinade cooking in the air fryer.
I put a significant amount of pork tenderloin carrots and potatoes in my airfryer and poured vegetable broth on top about ten ounces and it turned out great.
Hi Cathy!!! I have both your cookbook which I bought when it first came out. Have the Cheat Sheets also. I enjoy both of them. That device to lift the tray out is super Kool!!! Thanks for doing all this testing for us...I never tried steaming. Great video my dear friend!!!...🦋
Does the preheat for the Instant air fryer include preheating the water too? It would make more sense from a steam vs overcooking standpoint. I wanted to find the best way to air fry steam frozen lobster tails vs stovetop steaming. Another great use for the air fryer is after sous vide ribs. I take cooked ribs, dry and season them, then cook at steak setting in the air fryer for 4 minutes, on both sides, for drop off the bone pork ribs!
If you're trying to steam in the dual blaze, wouldn't it work better if you used the "bake" instead of the "air fry"? That way it would heat from the bottom.....just like on the stove...instead from the top. That could be why the water didn't get very hot. Just wondering!
Good thought. Although, the air fry function on the dual blaze uses both the top AND the bottom heating elements, so I thought it would have really heated that up quickly!
I wrap asparagus in silver foil and seasoning and tablespoon water. Air fry on roast 180c for 15 minutes. Perfect steamed veg
THAT is good to know!
Good info thanks for researching! I think I’ll stick with instant pot - most veggies done in under 5 min.
True!
I just bought a sunbeam steamfry air fryer + steamer. Model number AFP4600BK. Technically this is our 3rd air fryer, but we haven’t used the previous ones much. Looking forward to trying it out. Especially the steam clean function to assist with getting oil off.
If it’s a small amount, I put the broccolis in a rameken with a lid and they don’t dry out. If I need a big amount, I steam them. Much easier.
Good idea!
Hi you are the Best …
I check it and my tip is to put some spice in the steaming water … what a great effect…. Yammmm
Just filled out the form online for the Cosori Air Fryer Recall!! My model is one that is affected 😮
I got a message too about my Cosori Air Fryer too. I did notice the plug in cord gets hot when I use the air fryer.
Have you thought about rinsing your veggies right before you cook them in your air fryer ? Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Frozen veggies are partly cooked already from being frozen (it’s called, ‘cryo-blanching’ but don’t ask me about the science lol). That’s likely why they cook better in the air fryer. I’d be too nervous to try steaming them in the air fryer, but I do have a microwave steamer box, and a basic oven top steamer pan, which work well, so think I’ll stick with them.
Where can you buy the tool that grabs the rack that your friend’s husband made?
Unfortunately, you can't! Her husband designed it for her and printed it. Hopefully she watches this and then starts selling them to everyone that wants one! :)
Just got a recall notice from Cosori for my air fryer. I just finished the registration for a replacement, but it requires you to cut the electric cord on your air fryer and upload pictures. So bummed out that I'll be without an air fryer until my replacement gets here! But I'm looking forward to a brand new Cosori Air Fryer!!!
I just heard about the recall and like you so hate the cutting cord thing…I use mine 3-5 times a day, everyday. Hope they’re quick🥺🥺
@@cindyarrington6787 And I had just bought the sweet peppers and some cream cheese at ALDI! Oh well, time to heat up the kitchen and use the (GASP!) oven...
Did u hear about the RECALL on Cosiri air fryers due to fire risk?!
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
The Bear Air Fryer QZG-F15E3 air fryer has water adding function.
Do you recommend it? It is not expensive one.
Why insta needs to preheat? Does it help with cooking time? I'm trying to choose an airfryer to buy.
Hey Kathy. Major recall with Cosori! You might want to make a video about it
Love your vids ❤️
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
Is there a way to get you Air Fryer Cheat Sheets as a download please I'm in the UK x
Instapot Pro crisp + air fryer is a must in any kitchen it has a steam option! 🤣 Seriously I live on a ⛵ and it's the only form of cooking I need it just does everything! But still loved that your an outlaw breaking the rules putting water in an airfryer 🤣😇🤪
😂 thank you! Got to test things out around here!
What capacity is this air fryer? Or what model is this?
If ur not supposed to add water to the airfryer what do i do if mine has a separate compartment for steaming?
Something you might want to check out. PowerXL Air Fryer/Steamer 7-Qt.
Thanks for your videos!
The Ninja Speedi Rapid Cooker & Air Fryer has a steam function built in. The Steam & Air Fry function is something no other air fryer does.
Tefal got the same option plus grill.
What about preheating just barely enough water to be a “puddle” in the bottom basket at 275 for 7 min and THEN putting veggies in for ten min?
OR wet the fresh veggies and put them in the air fryer for 10 min at 300?
Will try this!
Let me know how it goes for you!
You need to put it on saute mode only on a rack. That will create the steam required to steam. There wasn't any steam when you opened it..
I have a heating element top and bottom of mine too but you can just use the bottom one in saute mode.
I love the air fryer. I have a ninja with 2 trays. I also had stomach cancer and my stomach removed. So I eat 6 to 8 times a day. The air fryer is great for this. Also I have to eat lots of protein so love using it for lamb, chicken, and 🥩 pork
Just a friendly Fyi, One of the recorded flaws of modern AI is that it will often lie/ muddle and portray incorrect information when giving results.
When you mentioned that was how you decided you should steam food in an electric air fryer, I had to mention that, for the sake of the fact that this could damage your air fryer over time. Steam is a powerful and intense cooking tool
Hey kathy. I just got a message from Amazon. A bunch of cosori air fryers have recalls due to possible fire issues. Mine is on the recall. Please let people know. Thanks
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
I have steamed in an air fryer by using frozen vegetable mix. Especially if you overcrowd the air fryer what you get is a bunch of water in the bottom and steamed vegetables
YES... for sure, those frozen veggies pretty much already have water in them!
Carrots (don't use the prefab kind) are great in the air fryer. Cut the carrots in big pieces, AF at 360 for a long time (45min?) and toss a lot.
Best use of AI so far.
Well, YES you can steam in an air fryer machine, but the way the machine is built, the steam is detrimental to the internal workings of the machine. Steam droplettes can linger on wires and open metal parts, speeding up corrosion.....which could lead to the machine burning or catching fire one day.
Yes, there IS some steam off cooking regular foods, but its not the same level of water vapors entering the top of the machine as it is with just fully steaming something.
My suggestion would be to get an oven proof baking dish with oven proof lid, place your steamables in that, along with a couple of tablespoons of clean water, and do it like that. Or, wrap them in foil if you don't have a dish.
If you DO actually open steam inside the AF, then I would strongly suggest once the food is done, to run the AF on high temp for 5 minutes to help the internals of the machine dry out. Just be wary that some steam droplettes CAN carry food particles in them and adhere to your machines inner workings.
It would take time for this to build up and affect your machine, but there is no limit to what those water vapors and steam droplettes can do.
Good advice, thanks!
Love, love, love my air fryer but steaming veggies in my microwave steamer just makes more sense.
I just brought the instant pot air fryer 2 quart! I want to try this!
Cathy, I am sure you are aware of this because you are always up to date…
I received a recall on my Cosori air fryer 5.8 quart…
I was trying to roast some veggies (onions, peppers, zucchini) in mine without water. The veggies created their own steam and it killed my Instantpot Vortex Airfryer. We took it apart and reset it, but couldn't get it to work right.
We like broccoli in the air fryer, but the whole house smells like broccoli! 😅
I steamed some corn with my duo blaze turned out ok… but it was quicker the old way in microwave
I have Krups steamer without a temperature control. It basic function is a timer to control the warmth of the food. You can't go wrong with drying out your food with a set temperature. Just let the steamer do it's work😅
'What if we ignore the rules and do it anyway? A girl after my own heart!!👍😃
I looked in the air fryer to see where steam would rise to if I used water in the air fryer and there is a heating element (meaning electrical parts) directly above the basket. That means that steam would rise directly into the electrical parts of the machine. That's the only place the steam has to go, so I don't think steaming is a very smart idea. Bummer though. I was wondering if adding water to the basket would help keep boneless skinless chicken breasts a little more moist.
I’ve thought about it. Here you are trying it.
😂
Was going to try this and then I got the recall notice for my Cosori. Not sure how I’m going to survive 6-8 weeks without my AF 😱
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
you can repair the cord after cutting it lol
how many airfryer do you have
When I make asparagus for my husband, they always come out wilted and mushy looking. I wash/dry them, then spray them with oil and put garlic salt on them, cook for 6-8 minutes at 380 degrees and they come out limp 😂
Husband never complains but I don’t think they look yummy.
Recall on corsi airfryers
Were you aware of Cososri’s recall on its airfryers?
I'm wondering if there is a way to add steam when doing bread, to give it a really good crispy crust
Hmm, not sure abt that!
I think that it would be better to steam them in a microwave or just us a double boiler.
Did anyone read that some Cosori models have been recalled?
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
I suppose it is a bit like trying to heat water using a hair dryer. Good experiment, but I'll stick with my microwave for steaming. I'll still use my air fryer for everything else though.
I'm going to try seasoned chicken breasts with stock in the basket. steamed veg in the microwave and make a sauce with the residual stock.
The test would be temp and time with and without water in the bottom. It would be very hard to get water to boil in an air fryer as it would evaporate before it would get to a boil. The water my help with keeping the air moist, jot actually steam.
0:12 Oh, I don't know... maybe the steam might condense on the internal electronics and cause issues down the road, like electrical shorts/fires..? Btw, many people have reported, that after getting a question answered by AI, if they then ask... Are You Sure? The AI changes their answer/response.
CHeck if your Cosori air fryer is being recalled. I just saw that many models are being recalled
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
You say fc my air fryer is oc for temperature how do I convert it 👍
Did AI tell you many Cosari were recalled?
I STEAM CARROTS AND ALL,VEG IN THE INSTANT POT. I GOT RID OF MY OLD STEAMER .
SPROUTS ARE THE BEST IN THE AIRFRYER , CUT IN HALF A SPRAYED WITH OIL . EVIDENTLY I COULD STEAM THEM NOW TOO .
Let me know how it goes!
Bet Linda Sue husband could start a side business selling that cool tool tray lifter. Your subscribers alone could keep him quite busy.
Agreed!!
FYI, I read about a cosori recall. May want to let your viewers know. 2M devices recalled
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
I preheat the water at 400 degrees. This way the water steams and the broccoli doesn't crisp and cooks.
Awesome video
??? What about cooking bacon 🥓 in water in the air fryer??
I'm wondering if it's better to take the strainer/rack thinger out of the basket so the bacon could be submerged in water so it doesn't splatter.
Hi do u ship internationally
Yes we do! Go to www.yummyairfryerrecipes.com/book-order1
Put the veg in a dish with some water ( use the kettle if you need to) . Cover with foil . Away you go
Maybe you can add boiling water and cook at a lower temp in the air fryer
I'm not sure adding water to an air fryer is a good idea. It's not really designed for that. Not to pick on any one brand, but it was reported today that over 2 million Cosori air fryers have been recalled due to electrical connectors problems. Adding water to the mix can't be a good idea.
Please address the
Cosori recall issued today.
Yes. Video coming on Saturday all about it!
@@empoweredcooks Thanks. I only heard about this on our local news and my model is very new. Hope it’s okay. I’ve not had a problem.
New ninja speedi has steam function. In fact half of the settings require water
my guess is to preheat the water so hot, that it already steams when u put in your vegis? not sure, just guessing.
use hot water after preheating the air fryer ,will steam better, and less time.
So, not all of airfryers have a steam feature?
Personally, I would have thought that creating and potentially mixing steam with electrically powered equipment may of course lead to catastrophic failure in use… as in 💥BANG🔥…so be careful out there…
Actually no need to put water in the air fryer.. Previously tested put fresh veggies (with oil, season salt n pepper) n 100ml hot boiling water in Aluminum foil mould n cover up the top with aluminum foil..The covered aluminum mould put into air fryer 200℃ for 10-20 minutes according to prefer veggie texture. The water inside will create steam, trapped steam n cook the veggies..
Or Wrapped veggies n water in Aluminum foil also will do..
Maybe using boiling water at the beginning would help with steaming.
