    The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge to introduce a new Routemaster... The Boris Bus replaced the articulated buses predominantly as the majority of route masters had already been removed from non heritage routes prior to the Boris Bus entering service

    The electric bikes were called Boris bikes, not the busses! I'd say 12 years of service is good going, and it's normal for them to be replaced with electric or hydrogen alternatives. UK is way behind compared to the rest of Europe. Besides, it's a great hypocrisy running these busses in London, whereas other vehicles have to pay eye watering ULEZ charges if they don't meet the emissions threshold.

      Diesel buses typically have an economic lifespan of about 12-15 years. The boris buses are slated to continue service till 2030 (with extra funding) or 2034 (without extra funding), which is when zero-emission requirements forces TFL's hand.
      If they make 2030, the buses will be 13-19 years old. If they make 2034, they'll be 17-23 years old. In either case, they will not be replaced unusually early.

    • @jolampard7722

      The bendy buses weren’t even good for many of the routes they were deemed suitable for, let alone the whole of London - the length meant they frequently got stuck across junctions - does nobody else remember the massive gridlocks in the mid 2000s at places like Cambridge Circus, when they were brought in on the 38? Our streets in central London are narrow and medieval in layout compared to many European cities. And they most certainly were not friendly for the elderly or actually, many people with disabilities, just because they were single deck and had level access for wheelchairs - the number of standing passengers and dire lack of seats made them a poor replacement for the Routemasters (with a conductor to make sure that elderly people, those with limited mobility or blind people got on and sat down before the bus moved. On the bendies I’m sure the driver couldn’t even see where they had gone)! They’re ok for moving lots of able bodied people quickly over a short distance so quite suitable for airport car park shuttles etc.

    To be honest im quite fond of these busses, they do have quite a powerful visual identity to them and i wouldn't say that they are noticably much worse performance wise than the more normal double deckers you see on the street. It would be a shame to see them go after such a short ammount of time

    When the battery busses start catching fire like a Ford Pinto, they will say that there is nothing they can do. We already had the technology almost 100 years ago, a trolley bus, it's light and is unlikely to cause a long lasting fire, and would be much lighter, causing less damage to the streets.

    Just curious, why is it that the mayor of London as well as the PM are both Indian? I know there’s a huge presence of foreigners in the UK, not to mention the recent PM of Scotland is also of foreign descent, it just seems curious to me that so many positions of power are held by them and am just wondering if someone can explain it to this American?

    London doesn’t run homogeneous bus fleets. There’s a mix of models in service at any one time. The idea that the routemaster was the main London bus from 1950s to 2000s is completely wrong.

    • @warweezil2802
      @warweezil2802 3 месяца назад

      Up until 1970 there were only RM & RT in terms of double deckers. The awful Fleetline opo vehicles arrived (8 fleetlines went to London Country in the mid 60s for evaluation). In the late 70s MCW & Leyland titans joined the fleet, a couple of Volvos were used for evaluation in the early 80s (at least one ran on the 77/77a route crew operated. So while in more recent years there has been a very mixed fleet in London this wasn’t always the case. It should also be noted that from the early 70s onwards there was a bias towards RM operation in routes covering the “central area” because of dwell times at stops.
      I think the longevity of the RM proved the wisdom of the operator designing and building a vehicle to cope with London, but the mess tendering left us with has reduced a great service to a patchwork mess run by short life vehicles
