Great video about the great French writer Jules Verne. Very good selection of films based on his great novels with very good photographs and movie posters. Of the films in the video I would like to comment on my favorites that I have been fortunate to see. The Soldier and the Lady 1937 George Nichols Jr. Interesting film about The Czar's Courier, one of Jules Verne's great novels with a very good cast. Anton Walbrook, Elizabeth Allan and Akim Tamiroff. Movie that I was lucky enough to see a long time ago on television. This great actor Anton Walbrook previously starred in two previous versions in the role of Michael Strogoff, a German version and a French version. I have always understood that the French version was the best, very well scored by the critics with great performances by Anton Walbrook and the great French actor Charles Vanel, it seems that there are no copies available of this film. my father could see it when it was released in Spain in theaters and it was a great public success. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea 1954 Richard Fleischer. I believe as a fan that it is the best film about a Jules Verne novel ever made in the cinema. And I also believe as a fan that it is the best Walt Disney movie with real characters with Mary Poppins 1964. The truth is that it is a very entertaining film with spectacular scenes in the sea that are truly unrepeatable with great performances from the entire cast. Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre. Michael Strogoff 1956 Carmine Gallone. Another interesting version of this great novel with a good cast. Curd Jurgens, Genevieve Page and Sylva Koscina among others. Film that I have seen in theaters and then on DVD. Around the World in 80 Days 1956 Michael Anderson. Great blockbuster with great cast. One of the best performances of the great actor David Niven as Phileas Fogg. Also a great performance by the great Mexican comedian Cantinflas and the great actress Shirley MacLaine among other great stars of this great production. Finally. Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959 Henry Levin. Another great gem of cinema about this great novel by Jules Verne. Very entertaining adventure film with great special effects of the time, with another great performance by the great English actor James Mason, one of my favorite actors of all time.
Great post Marco. James Mason is one of my all time favorites too, he was superb in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth, my two favorite Jules Verne adaptations. Being a Ray Harryhausen fan I've watched Mysterious Island many times, especially in my youth. I owned a condensed copy of that film on Super 8 a long time ago.
