A 'cold chisel' is used by metal workers, mechanics, fitters etc, it is a chisel used for rough cutting metals from sheet metal to cast iron. Wood chisels, stone chisels and cold chisels are designed for purpose and are shaped accordingly. so a 'cold chisel' is primarily for metalworking. By the way, I am a retired old school mechanic. Thanks for your reactions to this iconic band, I'm an Aussie and have enjoyed their music since day one.

    • @artistjoh

A cold chisel is definitely a thing. wood working chisels, and masonry chisels are things to, but every working class man knows and uses a cold chisel. Calling themselves Cold Chisel is referring to working class origins, especially working in metal working shops. It is associated with being hard and real but has the added benefit for a band of being associated with the cutting edge.

Ive only been there a few times and I recognize the places in the vid. I was there for 3 NYE in the 90s.. Its STILL very much the same... just slightly less "corrupt" now haha

Cold Chisel is made from high grade vanadium steel used for cutting 'cold' metals. Used for removing waste metal when a very smooth finish is required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools. Ideal for handyman, DIY and construction use. cold chisels can be used on metal, say if you want to remove a nut that wont budge or is rusted on you choose the chisel suited to the size of the nut then you get a heavy hammer and bang it and it will cut through the nut

  • @phillipevans9414
    @phillipevans9414 Год назад +2

    Cold chisel
A cold chisel is a tool made of tempered steel used for cutting 'cold' metals,[2] meaning that they are not used in conjunction with heating torches, forges, etc. Cold chisels are used to remove waste metal when a very smooth finish is not required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools, such as a hacksaw, file, bench shears or power tools.
The name cold chisel comes from its use by blacksmiths to cut metal while it was cold as compared to other tools they used to cut hot metal. Because cold chisels are used to form metal, they have a less-acute angle to the sharp portion of the blade than a woodworking chisel. This gives the cutting edge greater strength at the expense of sharpness.
Cold chisels come in a variety of sizes, from fine engraving tools that are tapped with very light hammers, to massive tools that are driven with sledgehammers. Cold chisels are forged to shape and hardened and tempered (to a blue colour) at the cutting edge.
The head of the chisel is chamfered to slow down the formation of the mushroom shape caused by hammering and is left soft to avoid brittle fracture splintering from hammer blows.
There are four common types of cold chisels. These are the flat chisel, the most widely known type, which is used to cut bars and rods to reduce surfaces and to cut sheet metal that is too thick or difficult to cut with tin snips. The cross cut chisel is used for cutting grooves and slots. The blade narrows behind the cutting edge to provide clearance. The round nose chisel is used for cutting semi-circular grooves for oil ways in bearings. The diamond point chisel is used for cleaning out corners or difficult places and pulling over centre punch marks wrongly placed for drilling.
Although the vast majority of cold chisels are made of steel, a few are manufactured from beryllium copper, for use in special situations where non-sparking tools are required.
Cold Chisels are predominantly used in Repoussé and chasing processes for the fabrication of bronze and aluminium sculptures.

Cold chisels are used to cut rivets, to split nuts or bolts that refuse to come loose, or to break castings. They can also be used to cut sheet metal. The metal chisels with edges in other shapes have other applications, such as grooving or shaping corners.

In the early 70s the band didn’t have a name they just changed it each time they appeared, but the name of this particular song seemed to stick, so they kept it as the band name. Be careful who you ask what a bogan is. Wikki is wrong as usual. There are a variety of meanings. Mostly folk who are happy with who they are, not caring how others see them, unapologetically doing what they want to, with however much they have. Some are fighters, hoons, some boozers, or druggies, some generations of unemployed, most proud of how they get by. Some are really rough to look at, a lot are really kind folk. Don't think aussies are dumb if they look rough, we are not. Bogan is not always derogatory, depends who you talk to.

Lads a cold chisel is a specifically designed chisel primarily used to split metal items.
"The cold chisel is hard or tempered because the metal being cut or shaped by it is hard. In the case of a hot chisel, the metal being cut is generally soft. Hence, the hot chisels are not as hard and tempered as compared to cold chisels."

Yeah Cold Chisel first broke up in 1983 they briefly reformed in 1984 for Last Stand Tour 1983 - 1984 . Jimmy Barnes first solo album was released the same year in 1984 Bodyswerve.
Drummer Steve Prestwich joined the Little River Band in 1984 to 1986 while John Farnham was lead singer then went on to underrated solo career.
Keyboardist and main songwriter Don Walker had a number of musical projects Catfish , Tex Don & Charlie and solo .
Ian Moss took nearly 5 years to produce any music in 1989 with the Matchbook album witch was pretty much nearly a Cold Chisel album without Jimmy Barnes .
Bassist Phil Small kept a low key profile outside Cold Chisel.
Cold Chisel reformed again in the late 90’s coincidence with Jimmy Barnes being chased by the tax department in Australia after a few solo album failed to get him out financial troubles .
Plus Don Walker had so many songs that he wanted Cold Chisel back together to record them . Since then Cold Chisel had been balanced between solo careers . Steve Prestwich sadly passed away in 2011 .

If you haven't seen the Aussie comedy Kath & Kim, it's a good way to understand what a bogan is.
Pretty appropriate song to finish on, as it's their last hit song of 83'. Ian was still learning it and forgot the words during their last stand tour. It's featured on the video. What was supposed to be "Saturday night's already old, walking into Sunday and I find, all desires are cold etc...". But it turned into "Saturday night's already old, I can feel the same old hole, cigarettes to ease my mind, tell me what you like, no I don't mind"... 🤣🤣🤣
Then Jimmy holds up the words for him.

(a kind of junk food delicacy here called " cheezels " ) So....Gold Cheezel " became Cold chisel by default ......fun fact 1:

The difference between Chisel and others bands is they broke up when someone left and joined a cult, whereas Jimmy left to go solo and started a cult.
You definately could do a second Chisel week if you're interested. My suggested 6 songs would be - Standing on the Outside, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Shipping Steel, Ita, Forever Now and Choir Girl.

My dad had one, it is moulded from one lot of metal, the top is flat, the tool end looks like a blunt, flattened point, a bit like a flat head screwdriver. Normal chisels have a Handle. Cold chisels do not. Over time the end gets pushed out of shape, it ends up looking like a mushroom cap, with random splits in it. Cold in this sense means blunt, it is used with a big hammer to bludgeon things you want to work on. The area the band came from was industrial, from what I understand.

Apparently the name came from the fact that they used to use different names for every performance in the early 70's..... they used the name 'Cold Chisel' from a Don Walker song one time.... and decided they liked it..... so they kept it :D xx

COLD chisels are used to cut through hard materials like metal or masonry. They are often used to cut or shape metal when the stock is thick and where other tools, like a hacksaw or tin snips, would be unsuitable

They formed in Adelaide during September 1973 on the initiative of guitarist/singer Ian Moss. In the beginning, the band used a different name for every performance. After they used the name of the Don Walker song "Cold Chisel" for one particular performance, the name stuck.
