    Elementals are perfect fantasy creatures! They are gorgeous to look at, players can understand them without much explanation, they can have fun game mechanics, and they add a level of whimsy and danger that few monsters can match.

      AJ Pickett I could imagine a befriended Wind elemental at your back boosting your pace of travel or providing a bubble to breathe underwater. A friendly fire elemental could provide much needed light and warmth, etc etc. Elementals strike me as a springboard for the imagination seeing as they are sentient forces of nature.

      Since it's a divine spell, I assume it's literal 'mana from heavan', being made out of divine positive energy sent from the upper planes.

Surely, no self respecting caster would purposefully manifest vitamin enriched saw dust and water. The spell either implicates deities that can't be bothered with a decent meal, or that there is a plane of gruel that you can call matter from. Both of these are terrifying in my opinion.

    This is going to be a lot so just answer any and all that you feel like. I will compleatly understand if you skip a lot of this. Also sorry in advance for horrendous spelling, or if you have already covered this, you have a lot of videos and I am still going through the back catalog.
    1.) So how could one get to an alternate timeline (probably spawning exponentially more by doing so), can you do it with a wish or a divine intervention?
    2.) Can a time elemental change the timeline, and if so can you get it, or something else with that ability, to alter it, or is their a rule about using such things to effect events in the lives of non time travelers to maintain some form of consistency, or something?
    3.) Are powerful creatures like gods primordials, slad lords, arch fey, arch devils, daemon princes etc. immune to changes in the time line?
    4.) So the elemental planes as described in the 5e dmg are the "closer" ends to the prime, the planescape versions are "deeper" and only elementals can travel beyond that. Maybe the elemental chaos is where they all meet, and the feywild and the shadowfell have the positive and negative quasielemental plains respectively, as oposed to the main four and the paraelementals. I don't know. Is that about right?
    5.) So daemons were elementals (or at least similar) when they originally came here, but are now outsiders, fiends specifically, thou they still retain a few traits?
    6.) Is the standard and/or best method for removing demonic corruption just to tear it all down, destroy the pieces, and use the infinite resources of the elemental planes to start over and build everything from scratch? Also, would the primordials get corrupted, or is permanent damage only through prolonged exposure to the abyss or the daemons themselves, so if they kill them quickly its all good.
    7.) How did the abyss go from the inner to the outer planes
    8.) Is there a known, or even fixed, number of arcomentals?
    9.) Do you think WoTC will bring back the full roster of inner planes and give rules for the old versions in addition to the relatively mild ones we have now, or are we going to need to rely on the old planescape books (if the latter, do you know any good conversions)?
    10.) Do you know how elementals are created?
    11.) If larger elementals are smaller ones fused together, why do all elementals not do this whenever they meet (or do I have that wrong)? Is it a matter of whether they want to at the time?
    12.) Can someone become a primordial by (first, if they are not already a elemental, fusing with one to become a geni. Then) fusing with more and more elementals, or is that not how it works?
    13.) Are necromentals the elementals of the negative energy and quasi-elemental planes or do they have their own elementals like the ones in the positive energy plane?
    14.) If all matter is made of various elements, could you fuse elementals together until you have a soulless humanoid elemental, or some other normal creature or object?
    15.) Are there unraveler primortianls?
    16.) Are genasi also formed when mortal creatures spend multiple genorations on the inner/ethereal plane(s) like planer creatures on the outer/astral plane(s)?
    17.) can someone be a planer elemental, geni, or genasi, or is it that you are either one, the other, or niether?
    18.) I think the elements just separated form the positive energy plane like light through a prism. Those elements in a less concentrated form filled the ethereal plane with the ethereal mist and probably the phlogiston where it intersects the astral plane. Thats just my guess though.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  5 лет назад

      1.) Any spell that is capable of taking a person to another plane of existence is powerful enough to jump them to a parallel dimension, the tricky part is navigating to exactly the right one, and involves very difficult calculations requiring very high intelligence.
      2.) Time elementals can transport other entities through time at great cost to themselves, they can also stop time in a local zone for a short while, but they must be forced to do so, they have no natural inclination to interact with the timeline of any particular dimension, they are devoid of passion and empathy.
      3.) No.
      4.) i0.wp.com/www.lostkingdom.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/the_planescape_multiverse_by_zen79.jpg
      5.) Demons are alien entities without physical form that pushed their way through from the Far Realm, they manifest by creating corrupt, vile versions of elemental forms.
      6.) Yes and Yes.
      7.) The entrance to the Abyss is from the center of the Elemental planes, from there it has burrowed through the multiverse and can spread to just about anywhere. All who arrive in the abyss will typically arrive in a random location.
      8.) As far as anyone knows, yes.
      9.) Why reinvent a perfectly functional wheel? In this case, the great cosmic wheel.
      10.) I have a pretty good guess.
      11.) Fusing together doesn't mean they are eaten up and destroyed as individual beings, they just become part of a larger entity, much like we are a multicellular organism, but for them, the element of their home is their true body, when there is enough of it to go around, they may disperse and multiply into it again. It is not normal for Elementals to have a very rigid sense of where they end and other elementals begin, in that respect, they are very alien to us.
      12.) There are as many origins to the Primordials as there are primordials, it is an incredibly broad category of very powerful forms of life.
      13.) They are elementals who have become undead.
      14.) Never say never in Alchemy, only "Duck!" and "Run!".
      15.) Unknown, it seems like Atropus was something like that, a being of pure destruction.
      16.) They can do, there are beings who are like that who are not Genasi though, I mention them in my old video on Planar Races.
      17.) The names define what they are, if they are not any one of those things, then they are something new, with a different name.
      18.) It's anybodies guess,

    • @dragonturtle7645
      @dragonturtle7645 5 лет назад

      @@AJPickett 5.) So even though daemons now use souls to make more daemons other outsiders do, they physically have more in common with elementals, and of cores strange physics alien and hostile to the multiverse like the far realm, and are thus more of a category in itself.
      7.) Is the entire abyss just on both the inner and outer planes at the same time (rather than half on one half on the other), almost forming a twisted transitive plane? Or is it just that all of the outer planes corrupted by the abyss drift over there by the nature of the great wheel and alignment, and since the original entrance is in the middle of the elemental planes (probably having its own version of a blood war with elementals trying to destroy it) the abyss was kind enough to give daemons and would be intruders a new front door in the "first" layer of the abyss (The plains of infinite portals). Also do you arrive on a random plane of the abyss if you planeshift, I thought that the "first" layer was supposed to be a sort of nexus up the abyss.
      P.s. Is there a known way to be in the abyss, or around daemons, for extended periods of time without being corrupted, and what exactly happens when one is?

    It's a bottle with water in it. The water is actually a water elemental. When in combat, the water will spill out of the bottle and freeze, making a sharp blade of ice, with the bottle itself acting like a handle.

    • @Leviathis_Krade
      @Leviathis_Krade 5 лет назад

      thats a badass weapon, but why stop at ice elementals have a full spectrum of blades available, not together in one bottle of course (unless you are making elemental grenades) an elemental isnt necessarily bound by our laws of physics.

    • @Leviathis_Krade
      @Leviathis_Krade 5 лет назад

      hell why not multiple facets of weapons to choose from where the "bottle" segments to form a staff or a battle axe, or have a string attached to both ends that when snagged it forms into a bow that could need ammo, or just manifest with either a connected ring that makes arrows out of other elements, or the bow makes force arrows; so much potential with your idea, that I'm totes stealing for my campaign

    I'm pretty sure functioning pure elemental planes are back as of 5E, judging by the DM's guide, various 5E maps and other materials. Which is just as well to me, the elemental chaos idea seems to have been one of those major canon foibles of 4E/Spellplague/etc storylines. I said all that to say this, I largely function as a DM as if the 2-3E books and materials on these locations are my reference its just a century and a half later DR.

    I've been working on some lore for the Archomentals, the Evil Elemental Princes/Princesses from Princes of the Apocalypse. I was working on coming up with some reasoning for Drown to have come into existence by the will of the Archomentals, and I was looking at Ben Hadar, the Good Prince of Water who seemingly chooses not to fight Olhydra, his Evil Water counterpart, but instead fights primarily with Bwimb/Bwimb II (daughter of Bwimb).
    Well, that got me looking into Bwimb because how can you not look into the Evil Elemental Prince of Ooze, and came up with the idea that the beings who would become Bwimb and Ben Hadar could have come from a former incarnation of the universe, having retained some semblance of their mind, but incarnating in the elemental chaos and reforming themselves from the elements. He who would be Ben Hadar retained much of his mind and was able to create a new form that could contain his essence properly. The one who would be Bwimb, however, found the parameters of this universe to be disagreeable to incorporation. As such, his essence dispersed throughout a wide region of elemental ooze, and much of his consciousness was torn apart and lost to the chaos.
    What remained, however, was able to fester and over eons coalesce into a cancerous mass. A different kind of ooze, which contained all that was left of his insane, obliterated mind. Without conscious intent, the ooze reflexively felt the presence of the divine gateway, and the mass then excreted a layer of slime and ripped itself free of the remnant which would come to be known as Bwimb. It passed into the Fugue Plane and leaked through a crack left by demons when raiding the Fugue for souls, landing itself in the 222nd Layer of the Abyss, Shedaklah. The being festered ever-more in this place of rot and evil, and came to know itself as The Faceless Lord, Juiblex, Demon Lord of Oozes and Slimes.
    The being who would become Ben Hadar watched this natural process occur and recognized that he, too, could benefit from segregating a piece of his essence into a pseudo-soul and backdooring his way into the divine pathway. He was able to gather the most vital pieces of his consciousness into one mass, but couldn't stomach disembowling himself the way he saw Bwimb do it. Instead, he enlisted the assistance of another powerful water elemental, Olhydra, and offered her the bargain that she could take over as Evil Elemental Princess of Water if she created a tool capable of removing what he suggested was a dangerous growth.
    She created Drown, testing it on herself by scraping a spark of her essence off (which then was unknowingly absorbed into the tool), and brought it forward. She pierced the point indicated, and pried free the mass of water and thought, sending it on a very similar path to Juiblex. This elemental pseudo-soul, however, found its way to the 89th Level of the Abyss, the Shadowsea, and remade himself amongst those evil waters as The Prince of the Darkened Depths, Dagon, Demon Lord of the Sea and Sea Monsters. Once again, his remnant remained in the Elemental Planes and kept to his corner of the Plane of Water. He never contended with Olhydra's rule, but he did find himself butting heads quite regularly with his fellow remnant, Bwimb (and eventually after Bwimb's murder, Bwimb II).

    What do you think about the idea that the Fey are just life elementals?
    Not mortals lifeforms--which are the intersection of elements from every plane of existence--but spiritual beings that pass between and inhabit lifeforms of any given type. They draw power from, associate with, and mimic these lifeforms. Able to craft bodies for themselves that resemble their favorite combination of phenotypes and psychologies from the creatures they inhabit.
    I think it's a tidy explanation, but I don't know how it intersects with established lore.

    Two questions: 1)Do you know if there's an in-universe term for the garden variet elementals conjured by the summon elemental spell, to differentiate them from genies and mephits and whatnot?
    2) Have you encountered any lore elaborating on how elementals procreate? because in BG3 you can find a mud mephit and a summoning-type earth elemental that're in a happy marriage together, and I was just wondering what if any retcons this might imply.

  • @thedarkmaster4747
    @thedarkmaster4747 5 лет назад +6

    Quick two questions: Is it possible for genies to generate a deity given that they have mortal souls? If different elementals vary in power/size is it possible for genies to varry in the same way, as to say, to be generated with disgusting amounts of power - as a genie?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  5 лет назад +3

      There is very little that Genies can't accomplish if they set their minds to it, but with great power comes great laziness.

      AJ Pickett Genies hate being trapped in lamps, genies fear being trapped in lamps, genies dispise being trapped in lamps. A god of the djinn could remedy these violations. Genies are too proud to ask for help from each other when bound, especially given the mocking they would... "rightfully deserve to endure, for lowering themselves to such charity from within impotance." But, if genies cannot beg, they can pray, not to a lower being such as a mere ordinary god, but to a rite. A document of self delivery. An almighty made "manifesto" 😵🧞‍♀️🧞‍♂️

    One of my favorite bits of lore from 3.5 came from the book Tome of magic. It points out that the true names of elementals while they do apply to the elementals don't actually exercise any control or influence over them. The life force of an elemental is simply too mercurial to be bound even to its own identity.

    Random question(s, depending on how you break this down):
    Would it be theoretically possible for an elemental to gain a soul, and possibly as a result become a genie, from a wish spell (for example, if a mortal for whatever reason chose to do so as a reward to one which was brought to the prime material -- perhaps to animate a construct, or as part of a more ordinary summon, or in similar circumstances a deity), and would that maintain whatever passed for a personality the elemental had, or just be overwritten as a new being altogether?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  5 лет назад +2

      It becomes a new being, a Genie.

    • @Recoil1808
      @Recoil1808 4 года назад

      Sorry for posting this late response, but I figure it's an important bit of information, mixed maybe a little with some theorycrafting.
      While it is true non-genie Elementals lack a soul, they *are* often described as a spirit (or 'elemental spirit'), and thus technically do not just cease existing when they are destroyed, though instead are like elves and orcs *used* to be. Theoretically, a rod of resurrection, as well as the reincarnation spell if tried on one, *may* be able to resurrect one, as that was how you got your elves, orcs and half-orcs (oh yeah. Half elves had souls, but half orcs didn't, in the earliest of days) back to life, when D&D actually even cared about the difference between souls and spirits beyond lore (1st and 2nd editions). Source on the spirit thing: they are sentient beings which have free will, are capable of worshipping gods, and lack souls. This also goes part way to explaining necromentals a bit.
      Translation: it is likely (in my mind, at least) they fit into that category, but I can't find a real "clincher" on that one. Sorry if I didn't state my case overly well, though, as it is currently four in the morning and my sleep schedule is out-of-wack.

    Aww come on AJ. just sweeping the Primal Elemental under the rug with a simple "strongest you can find in the Prime Material"? You need to really sell the fact that these are literal walking mountains or conflagrations of fire so large and hot that even red dragons dare not come near... Primal elementals are like the gods of other lesser elementals with the Primordial being the gods of them.

Nagol The Chainer Of Gods who was given an item of great power from one of the over Gods ,Nagols Circlet Of Imprisonment. But am having trouble scrubbing details to make it fit and make sense. Any suggestions? Does it sound interesting?. Its home to The Belly Of The Sun. One of the greatest forges in the multiverse. Said to have been blessed by the Wind Dukes themselves. Also its home to the Primordial Prison. Designed to be the first cage of The Chained Oblivion. I'm thinking may a Psionic Djin Demigod. Warlock Psionic Sorcerer.
