  • The elemental plane of pure negative matter and energy, a lesson in entropy, despair, torment and hopelessness. In this video, I talk about the negative plane, as well as the Nightwalker undead, and the quasi-elemental planes that border the so-called plane of death.

    Sorry for the soft thumping sound you may hear in this video, my chair was knocking on a USB cable and the microphone was picking up the vibration. I tried to edit it out, but it just made the audio worse, so, I hope it doesn't bother anyone too much.

    My main character, who was an evil necromancer, eventually came to reside there, and our DMs ran a year long solo campaign with us all before the epilogue to do a x many years later, and this way we got to shape it.
    Eventually, my character, who was a lich at this point became the Dead Crown, a verifiable Boogeyman for mortals thereafter, the ruler of the Negative Energy Plane, in a kingdom of graves, the man who laid siege to death and ruled it ever more.
    So that was fun. Twas a good campaign, and this was a fun video, as always.

    I read that a cleric or a wizard can teleport to the positive energy plane for a second or two to get fully healed so can a Lich teleport to the negative energy plane to heal? Larloch had a hidden room with negative energy traps which he used to heal himself too...

    Interesting to see that there are some places so hostile that even the most powerful undead must be very wary or risk being destroyed or worse. And that giant glass orb is nothing short of ominous. It makes me wonder what an adventure involving undead players would be like. Great video on a really interesting subject!

    One way a plane can be infinite and have borders is for each plane to infinite in three dimensions and to assume one or more additional dimensions in which the planes are finite and thus have borders.

    I kinda like the 2ed edition take on the planes; the negitive material plane is only accessible by traversing the quasi negitive planes(ash, salt, vaccumm, & dust). Its a barren wasteland of pure darkness. Without strong protect, you would be quickly be drained of life, heat, light, and soon your remains would disintegrate. There is only one native "lifeform", a dark spherelike being with tenecles, truely alien. Demi elementals from the adjacent negitive planes can act as guide, but they are highly untrustworthy. There is not much to see deep in, as most matter breaks down fast. Undead can be found here in there. The voidstone idea is new and cool.

      Michael Scotts Interesting. I personally interpreted the negative energy plane in a more “everything is just wrong” way. Before I learned that it basically is the shadowfell on steroids I imagined a party of adventurers entering and everything simply “decaying” into a lesser state.
      For example if you have a steel sword then it’ll start to slowly petrify or maybe get all bendy. A very charismatic individual would slowly become more introverted and xenophobic. Frost spells would burn, fire spells would freeze, rapid aging would occure etc. I thought of the negative energy plane as a realm where everything was just “wrong”.

It was tranquil not quite my own demiplane in the negative energy plane. The bubble was powered by negative energy and was self sustaining. After hearing about the dangers of the positive energy plane and the dangers about this one, I have an incredibly stupid/dangerous idea... mostly it is to create crystals that contain a little of the essence of the positive and energy planes, find a way with said crystals to convert positive energy to negative and vice versa, then use those crystals as well as a few other odds and ends to become a Demilitch. After all that I will go on a rampage between the realms just blasting fools.

But then again I had the thought of a neat trick for a high lvl Drow would be a bag of handy sacks. A bag of holding woven out of spider silk where it's a bunch of bags of holding inside of a bag of holding where they all loop back into the bottom internal bag that was a handy haversack would be cool.... Yeah, you could get really gnarly with an undead fight, even have it so a lich or necromancer is shifting the undead spirits around, so, sends in some zombies, a few get cut to shreds by the party, one of the NPC's gets slammed to death, the lich points and commands the entities to possess the dead NPC, it raises up as a new zombie, the players are doing well, cutting into the zombies and then, another command and the zombies charge the player characters and their skeletons literally rip themselves out of their own flesh in an effort to stun the characters with how horrific this is, meanwhile, the lich has summoned a wraith, right, behind, them.

    Ok , im not sure where i found that info , so it might be some homebrew or not canon , but if i remember correctly , there is a self proclaimed Archomental living in the quazi-elemental plane of ash , Gazra the shifting emperor , a great lord of ash elementals with a vendetta against the plane of fire , his goal is to snuff it out and expand his kingdom of ash, and i find him very interesting for that, he sounds like your typical shadowy BBEG reaching for world domination , but taken from the perspective of the elemental planes .
    Imagine a campaign set entirely in all of the elemental planes with the players taking role of their inhabitants , going on a great adventure to stop the hateful ash lord from destroying the very primal concept of flame and heat in the multiverse.

    While "negative energy" does occur in real world physics, the Negative Energy described in D&D seems to have more in common with Entropy.
    Entropy is what causes matter and energy to dissipate which is what happens in the NEP. Entropy tends to be harder to explain than energy.

    I have Void-stone in my world as it's used by darkness, but it is made, it's a wet stone as it has lots of mana not good for much as in building, but through processing basically over a pit of lava and can be pressed and rolled sweating the mana from it, naturally, it will shrink, and cause the stone to be void, nonseeable past it. As it was used in panels, darkness had a tunnel system through it to get around being detected and was also used by darkness in portals to travel through.

    have a few things i don't understand : when you say that when you go to the negative energy plane you can't go back as long as the nightshade is not sent back, do you mean you can traverse a portal to there but not immediatly come back by said portal ? or is it impossible to plane shift/open a portal from within the negative energy plane ? Can you plane shift here and exit it by the portal toward sigil (without dealing with the nightshade) ? And can you open a portal/plane shift in the plane's boundaries to go the the paraelemental planes around it (again without dealing with the nightshade) ? You did a great job covering the negative material planes and did justice for the Sphere of Annihilation. One thing my players often were confused by and FAR later discovered, the difference between Quasi-Elemental Ash and Elemental Ice. One was anti-heat and the other was cold, a great way to challenge all players of any experience. Seriously, they all read the DMG, only recruits did not read it all. A Cube the Sphere all the time. My last group of veterans who went against the Ice Queen (Ash linked) were shocked by her great defense against them and nearly forgot about the quasi-elemental ash. Her minions were all about ice and cold, she did the major magics that bypassed their scrying and other things. I did give them hints with Ash Quasi-Elemental based beings as part of their encounters in the primarily Ice based kingdom. So silly of me, making my intellectual players think in a role-playing (intellectual) game.

    Wow, the "ejecting a Nightwalker" thing is a cool concept! And utterly terrifying!
    I mean, forget about convincing or tricking, trying to physically (magically) FORCE one to go back would be an absolutely massive undertaking!
    I think if it was my world, I would have it be SOMETIMES that happens. When you enter, the barrier between the Negative Material Plane and the rest of the universe momentarily weakens enough for occupants from the INSIDE to escape! But only the very strong. So, IF a Nightwalker was at/ near the barrier at that precise moment, they can act quickly and push through. And the barrier "attunes"/ links those two beings requiring them BOTH to pass through at the same time IF they ever want to pass through again.
    THAT way, SOME Planewalkers, ambitious necromancers, etc. DO successfully enter and LEAVE the plane and live to tell the tale!
    Thus (foolishly) encouraging others to TRY. Not realizing that it is potentially a nigh inescapable Death Trap! (that a "mere" Gate or Wish spell can NOT save your from) And those who don't return, are simply assumed killed by the "normal" dangers of the plane.

    Hey AJ? Have you made a video on the grimalkin yet? A fairly fascinating creature that would make for an excellent animal companion or wizard's familiar. Another suggestion I don't think you have up that's one of my favorite creatures is the gray render. Having one of those things all of a sudden show up tearing apart a village then suddenly seeing one of the player characters and following them around like a lost puppy is absolutely hilarious.

    The Negative Quasi-Elemental Plane of Dust is such a gloomy and yet pretty dead and stagnant place, where my high level party ended up in forgotten crypt, fighting off a Demi-Lich who basically was in slumber and was taking his time in dying etc. Lets say they were around 17-19th level and they had to evacuate.

    • @techstuff9198
      @techstuff9198 Год назад

      Ectoplasm _mechanically_ has no relation to Voidstone.
      I'd imagine that ectoplasm is the semi-materialized gooey threads of the negative and prime border. Meaning incorporeal undead may still be in the negative even while they attack the prime, however this would implicate far stronger uses of ectoplasm that I'd rather avoid allowing piss-ants with ethereal jaunt to discover.
      Portable holes are a powerful enough [common] product of the ethereal, I'm not going to fill it with [oil of instant epic undead].

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад +1

      As far as I know, the Feywild is not directly connected to the positive material plane, any more than usual. They shadowfell is, however, connected in particularly dark and nasty parts, to the negative material (or Negative energy) plane. This is more to do with the gods (and book writers) messing around with the plane of shadows, more than any cosmic physics sort of thing. But, I could be wrong.

    How can an infinite space have a boundary? It's a projective space. Loosely put, a projective space includes points at infinity where parallel lines intersect.

      Having a boundary is the definition of being finite.

      @@SkyTheBlessed Not all finite objects have a boundary. Here are four: a circle, a sphere, a torus, and a Klein bottle.
      A correction: hyperbolic space is a much better illustration of the image I was trying to get across, not projective space. (My focus is analysis, not geometry.) A wonderful example is Escher's Circle Limit IV, aka Heaven and Hell. The circular boundary is infinitely far away from the interior. (This can also be used to "explain" how one can see the top of the infinitely tall Spire; in hyperbolic space, an infinitely tall object only subtends an acute angle, unless you're literally right next to it.)

I was excusing myself for referencing projective space when hyperbolic space was much more appropriate, as my mathematical focus (in college) was more on analysis (calculus etc.) than geometry. Again, look at Circle Limit IV (Heaven and Hell) by M. C. Escher for a better picture. (It's actually on the cover of the geometry text used in my undergraduate class on geometry it's so good.)

    very cool video Aj ... question 1 in the positive plane there was a border plane ... the quasielemental plane of radiance, this negative plane seems to lack a border plane, question 2: so ¿who are these doomguard? they seem interesting a future video of them maybe ? i mean they apparently have built some citadels in some of the most inhospitalbe places in the multiverse so they sound cool at least P.D the far realm and the positive and negative elemental planes are certainly my favorite planes

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад +2

      The Border plane is basically the Shadowfell, there is some mention of the danger of portals (curtains) to the negative plane within the deep ethereal plane, that they can be subject to the same storms of intense negative energy and actually swallow up travellers who had no intention of crossing over, like an unstable wormhole that snatches a starship and deposits it in a desolate void. The Doomguard is a faction in the Planescape setting, so, they concern themselves with a particular philosophy about how the cosmos works, what it is for, what the point of it all is, in their case they (nicknamed the Sinkers) believe that entropy will always win, it is for the best, and the only natural fate of the universe. A future video on the Planescape factions is a great idea! I love the more exotic planes as well, the weirdest creatures are the ones adapted to the most extreme conditions.
