I am glad you are showing musicians that learning to read music is an important skill along with ear training and music theory.
For me it’s absolutely necessary. pit musician all my life.
@@DoctorJoanieTool Impressive. A great skill that many musicians don’t realize they need. I am working on it.
What if you're a music savant?@@GaryBook
@@DaxLLM Still important.
@@DoctorJoanieTool That`s amazing... I am blown away by all you great musicians that can read... regular Joe`s like me take it for granted the work you all do!
You got your work cut out for you. So much fun to see the inside track of your business.
I just watched Lee flip pages for 15 minutes and loved it.
hehehey that's a treat... an authentic inside look. Historical. Make em twist and break a leg Leland!
Love to see you share this. There's nothing I saw that I couldn't play, IF I HAD 18 MONTHS or so. You are definitely the God of bass.
I learned by ear and in later years learned how to read but I wish I would have started out learning to read. Amazing Lee!
It seems the 60s and 70s still dominate Music's general consciousness.
Thanks heaps! Really interesting to see how the pros do it. Have a great show :)
Thanks for showing us that. You are in a league of your own !
Opening song was smokin!
This is no 'Hootenanny', thank you for showing ☮
Have fun with Dean, Cheche, and the gang. It might be a lot but just ENJOY THE HECK OUT OF IT.
Not many people get to be the band at the Grammy's ..........THAT IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!
To learn that much in such a short amount of time is beyond belief. You are amazing!
I learned something to help me with my charts . Dog ear the upper right corner to help you grab and turn the page. Thanks!
This an incredible, once in a lifetime lesson for bass players who would like to learn to read. Thank you for shedding light on a bass situation only a select few experience!! -Eric Hervey
Hey Eric 👍🏼
You are right. You can take screen shots of a big breadth of music. I hope you can tune in to youtube to watch today. We are so lucky Lee takes his time to do his channel.
YEESSS!!! I saw my buddy John Hinchey's name on one of those charts!!! You can be assured that it is in the correct octave and accurate! Thank you, Lee! I was a Nashville pro bassist for 30 years. Nothing like you! But, I made a living. Lol What you're doing is exactly what I did in Nashvegas. You are my hero! Joe Murphy
It's awesome seeing the charts! Thanks for sharing.
Whoever the bass player was on that early Jackson 5 music was a great player, I love those bass parts on those tunes
WOAH - talk about an eclectic range! Got Gospel, Pop, R&B, Jazz, Classic Rock & Roll w/Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4", etc.. Yeah, being a big Gospel Music fan i went to see Kirk Franklin live w/some buddies back in the early 90's. Love Classical too, the Tchaikovskys, Prokofievs, Bachs! Great stuff, Lee! 👍🏾🤘🏾
👍👍. How cool is this! What a great idea to share this!!!!
Only one drawback: we usually watch these shows on RUclips at a glacial pace and now I'd like to see it in real time!
Too cool Leland, thanks for letting us look over your beard :) Anything and everything "watch me for the changes and try to keep up"
This is so cool! So insightful to see the charts for an event like this. More of this sort of content when possible please!
This is my goal Lee...someday soon! Awesome...thank you so much for sharing!
Sir, I saw the pre show as soon it began just for you. And I have to say, I'm not a christian but that guy Kirk Franklin really touched my heart with his performance. Truly amazing.
He tore it up!
So amazing the amount of different music….mind boggling to me… but, your particular experience …is amazing to me also… just another day of excitement and joy,,Enjoy Leland… Thankyou for the skinny… can’t wait!! Love to all !! 🥰🌹🪷🌹🪷🌹🪷🫶🏻🌀🪬🎶🖕🖕🖕🖕👍❤️
Thank you, Leland! Wow! What an absolute treat to see 'the book', your markups, and to hear your comments on the songs, especially 'Some Skunk Funk'. You guys and gals are absolute 'monsters'! Good luck with the page turns. (One of my dreams was to play in the orchestra for awards shows. At least I have seen 'the book'. 😊😊😊😊😊
So interesting that it’s still all paper. Thought they would have gone digital by now with Bluetooth page turning etc.
So awesome! Thank you for letting us take a peek at the book.
I practiced my bass reading skills on your charts. I nailed GImme Some Lovin' but that's about it.
I think 'Lose Yourself' was pretty playable too. 😂 9:01
Kirk Franklin chart looks like a roasting!! Killer bass parts
What a varied and fun selection of tunes!
This is so cool bro thanks for taking us inside the Grammys bro👍🙏✌️❤️
Thank you for sharing a view of the charts. It is surprising, if I may (I have done tons of copying), that they would provide double-sided chart for this Kirk Franklyn medley, considering a player will have to turn a page, by himself, in what is probably the most involved section for the bass. It is so EASY to avoid. And yes, four pages can be closed in a second after the last chord... Oh well... If a photocopy machine is close by... :). Thank you once again for showing the world what a professional musician is and does !
When I saw the first page of the sheets, I thought, I coud handle this, too. Not that complicated. But when you flip to the opening song: I'm outta here. Not my league. 🙂 So amazeing to show us, what is going on behind the scene.
I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
I hope you had a light on that stand! 😂🔥
Damn! You'll need a professional page turner!
And just a quarter of that book would make a full concert!
Hey lee. Really cool video. Love it that you get to play a bit of Prince. I’m a fan of his music for decades now and it will never bore me.
Be safe driving home and rest well. Greetings
Good afternoon, Lee! ❤😁🎶
Oh wow, what an incredible lineup of songs & genres! Love that Steely Dan music, though! They're all so good! Wish I could be there today listening to you guys! I see lots of eight and sixteenth notes in there, some staccato, too!
I'll be tuning into Recording Academy to watch you guys shortly!
Have a blast out there on stage! So exciting!!!
Love you SO damned much!!
🥰🎸🎶🥁🎵🎤

Brilllllliant - Easy to see why Leland gets the nod.
Wow! What a great mix of songs. Good luck turning pages!
Love seeing this!!!!! Thank u!!
You're making me want to watch the show.
Thanks so much for this. Educational and inspirational. Watched the show and loved your playing, as always.
Thanks for the tour! I'll know for next year. I was wondering about those other artists who received Grammys prior to the televised show, and also wondering how much spark was put into it. Turns out, quite alot!
Wish I had your energy!! ❤
I love seeing the pencil marks! I only forgot my pencil to a lesson once! Much less a practice!
More black dots than Staff lines on the Pentatonix number!!
Lotsa dog-earing!
Just another day at the office for Deb's brother...
thanks for sharing
That was quite a page turner! I had a 100 song Summer last year but for me it was 3 instruments, 4 different acts and 6 weeks to get through it. And 90% rhythm charts. Your bass book, bass, sight-reading, and fingers win, hands down! 🎶🖕🎶
Enjoy the Grammys pre-show,Leland 💖 🧙♂️
Healing energy ⚡ to Maureen and the boys 💖 🐾 🐾
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ! Best sunday morning wake up a pro musician could ask for. Damn!
Wow! About 50% of that stuff is on my spotify playlist for my office hours, what a cool choice. So yes -I will attend the youtube pre show fir sure!!! ❤
I hope you & everyone musicians, nominees, & guests will be safe from the weather & flooding today!
#singingintherain
~As always, thanks for the insight into the venue & event. Be safe.
This is soooooooooo cool. Ty for giving us the inside scoop on things. So cool. You are an amazing human being. Stay safe and healthy. There’s so much going around. It’s going to be so fun to stream this and hear the music and feel like an insider. I’ve been a ‘pit musician’ in an entirely diff universe most of my life and this is just so amazingly cool. Prince, Robert Palmer, All Along the Watchtower….
Cannot thank you enough.
👍
Love that !!!!
If someone handed that book to me and said we got a week to get this together I would have to say I think Leland sklar left this in the restroom and keep on walking. And I been reading and playing for over fifty years
"Jimmy Hendrix." Think I heard Mike Lindell in the background at 6:21. 😂 Some Skunk Funk - nice! Kirk Franklin part looks killer, as well. Thanks for this. Have a great show!
Man, that would be a work out on rhythm guitar. Carpel tunnel here I come.
At least I already knew some of those. LOLOL
Break a... both legs, Lee.
Don,t say that. He will be up there fixing his leg by himself! He is the only person ever, other than my father, that did his own dental work.
That is just the coolest thing ever!!
Man I loved seeing all your charts Leland! This is great stuff!
Thank you for sharing this. Looking forward to your performance. I hope everyone in here has access to the show.
This is awesome to see. I was hoping you would show us some of the charts!
Thanks for showing us the charts. A diverse program. Some Skunk Funk is tricky to play even when you’ve memorised the part but sight reading it under immense pressure is next level!
A power lift is kinda fun but extended it gets a little shaky and it's usually hot up there so you start sweating right away. Oh the joys of working for a living.
Thanks for showing your book...Nice how you have the chords and the bass cleff together. You are so lucky to have this opportunity and to have had all the great opportunities you've had in your life.
You were not kidding.....100 songs+........You will all be earning your keep.
This is too funny!
The Grammys is the "Mother" of the entire commercial music business - and they play Curtis Mayfield and Fela Kuti during the show!
Next year Frank Zappa, MC5 and Sex Pistols... ;-)
Interesting! Surprised to see Amigo (a Roberto Carlos' classic) in the lineup. Rock on!
Lee, thank you so much for sharing this! Us music geeks love it. Suggestion- Why not use iPads for delivery of the music? Easier to turn the page, so to speak. Unless there are changes in the order of the pieces of music.
Can you 'mark up' a chart on an iPad - on the fly? Pick up a pencil, you're done. You'd have to switch to edit mode, make the mark up, then save. Very inefficient. I doubt the musical director would like to wait for everyone to do so. iPads might be okay for 'complete' works, but not for a book like that one and not for a live show.
Some are using them. We had the choice. I do not have an iPad
Lee, this was so much fun to see. I've had the opportunity to do a little bit of this kind of work, on a much smaller scale, but I could relate to it . . . in a very small way. Thanks for the great videos, Lee. I'll be watching Sunday.
How about using stick tabs on them song sheets, Lee?
Good luck Lee! Will be watching today. 👀
Need some colour coated sheet tabs for quick flip lol!
I have a quick question for you Mr Sklar . Do you have a Jackie Gleason type of photographic memory or is it more of a Marilu Henner - highly autobiographical memory - capacity for recalling songs and music ? You seem to remember very quickly what's put in front of you on music sheets . Either way it's such a joy to watch you at work and play . Mr Gleason : given a 75 page script to learn ...45 minutes later he tosses it onto a table and says ...' got it .' Every single syllable ingrained into his memory bank . Jeez !Ms Henner remembers EVERYTHING from her youngest childhood until the present ...jeezo ! Talk about being gifted .....
Way cool! And, an additional way to whet our appetites. Seeing the Toto chart with your additional notes made me smile. There were a lot of your notes throughout the songs. Will be watching. You actually sound tired, I hope you got some good rest. Love and Thanks❤👍❤👍
I’m totally exhausted just looking at that book, let alone having to read and play all of those bass lines! 😮
Right? LOL
And there in different keys.
Thanks! Does someone print out updates on a laser printer and distribute them? No tabs or Nashville Numbers in that book. 🙂 I'm gonna try some of that on my little 4 string bass. Looks like all the Classical Composers are showing up. Hope you get some good rest!
Dig that "Real Book" font!!!❤
Man I’d be nervous as heck, all those different styles. Love to hear you play along on the Chicago 25 or 6 to 4! Good show.
Very 😎, Thank you! 💕 ✨️. The show was fantastic! Absolutely amazing! Thank you! 💕 ✨️
I always thought he was a gentleman because he could play the accordion and didn't
Haaaaaaaaa Toto right down your alley!!!!!! You know that one!!!!!
A great selection there. Thx for sharing!
Awesomeness 😎💜👩💜
Thank you for sharing!
How incredible is Kirk Franklin; musically, performances and his impeccable group?!?! An undeniable force of nature!
Was wonderful….
Quite an amazing song list there! The one that really caught my eye was Steely Dan's "Peg." That just might be my favorite Steely Dan track ever, and Chuck Rainey played bass on it. So often on '70s songs, if you weren't on bass, Chuck was. Kind of surreal to see you played a little bit of Chuck's lines in this montage.😎
Now that's a very impressive nights work. Have fun Lee. If I get lucky, I might watch some of it.
As a musician myself I always appreciate clean, clearly notated charts-that said I don’t see them nearly enough on my gigs… I’m not a pit or studio musician so my gigs aren’t on the high level that your gigs are on. Thank you so much for sharing what your book looks like. Also per your previous post about the music being pre recorded for the part we saw last night, it looked to me some of it was played live? Just curious… Thanks again sir, you are so generous sharing this. 💛
Some was live, some pre record. The fun thing with ours is it is 100% live.
@@lelandsklar6363 🙂🙏👍
Damn those reading chops definitely getting a workout I bet!
Do all of those get played or are they just potentially set to play?
All are played. How long depends on how long it takes for the people to get to the stage.
When I saw "Walk On" I was hoping it was Boston. ;)
WOW...!!!😃
😎👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
Love Brother
This is really interesting - are you expected to use a 5-string tuned down to play the B-flats below the stave or, do you play it in the 'normal' range? Seems weird that they wouldn't write it in the normal range for a bass guitar at this level of 'professional gig'.
Programmed by keyboard synth. Does not accommodate my instrument. Will play those up an octave.
Thank you.
I'm surprised they don't give each of you a touch screen large enough to clearly view two pages at a time. One tap and you see the next page. That way tune order, including last minute changes, can be displayed to all musicians simultaneously.
Fascinating stuff! Thank you for sharing this with us. I can’t read music (have always sung by ear), and I so admire folks who can. Thank you, Mr. Skylar 🫶🏻🎶🎶🎶
If anyone needed further proof of Leland's incredibly diverse musical ability, to play all genres...
That is so cool to get a preview, I’m expect the lapsteel player of Larkin Poe is gonna rip it up on the opening song! Thank you sir! ❤
Dig the behind the seen your so cool thanks Leland for being you my friend talk at you soon have a great nite as always peace out Cincy
Leland, what did you guys play for Annie Ray's educator grammy?
