No more fish - empty net syndrome in Greece | DW Documentary

- The EU says 93% of Mediterranean fish stocks have been overfished, and blames big trawlers in particular. The fish are getting smaller, and some species have disappeared completely. What comes next, Greek fisher Evgenia asks.
Five kilos of fish at three euros a kilo makes 15 euros per day. How can you make a living from it? Evgenia Floris asks herself this question every day. For over 50 years, she and her husband have been fishing on the Greek island of Chios. Although there are fewer and fewer fish now, the Evgenia and Georgios still keep going, because the sea is their life. They used to catch around ten to 20 kilos of fish off Chios in the past, which brought them in a good income. Today it’s no longer enough to live on: sometimes they can’t even afford fuel for their boat. State controls in Greece are virtually non-existent. Evgenia is 69 and Georgios 78, and they both say they will fish as long as they can, but they know that a tradition is finally coming to an end.

There are hardly 150 monk seals left in Greece, and total of 250 in whole Med sea... rarest seal in the world. So they can hardly blame the seal for lack of fish, but they do. And then they shoot the seals - but the fish doesnt “return”. Classic mindset. Easier to blame the first obvious thing, erradicate and think you solve the problem. While the real problem is - that sea was fished and over-fished for hundreds and thousands of years. Instead of allowing for protected areas to recover and re-populate - and in turn increase the surrounding fish stock - they would rather fish out the last, smallest and most juvenile fish they can find. Also - trawlers in Med sea is pure crime.
Those trawlers should be shot and 💀..no exaggeration.
It's evident the sea is fished out. The fish breeding grounds have been wiped out as well. Too many mouths to feed. Corporate greed. Poorly managed fisheries. It's the same problem worldwide to varying degrees.

Sadly in Namibia clubbing seals & their babies is considered a 'solution'...blaming seals - instead of these HUGE greedy COMMERCIAL fleets...
I just can't with man's inhumanity. Fuck the world we live in. We'll all die in the end, and deservedly so.
This does not only apply to Namibia: Large trawlers from the EU member states, Russia, China and Japan have been depleting fishing resources along the coastline of the African continent for decades. Local politicians in the African countries have sold fishing rights and enriched themselves whilst the men and women who have been fishing the waters for centuries on a sustainable scale have been left without an income and / or food on the table. This is but one of the genocidal acts of the G20 nations! I rest my case.
@@stonew1927 i can see why god flood the earth the first time
The biggest problem isn’t even the commercial fleets although they are certainly a huge problem. The biggest problem is the universal corruption of politicians who allow the big commercial fleet operators to get away with the overfishing since they are allowing a sustainable resource to be destroyed. Then there is the issue of pollution which is on track to become so pervasive that fish cannot be eaten because of toxicity levels.
Denny Smith yes, always attacking the underdog instead of the Pimp prostituting our earth and sea.

Look.. It's always poignant when the fishers ask where the fish went.
It's always: There was so much fish. We caught such big catches. Hey! We used dynamite! Big catch! Where's the big catches now?
Same in my country. You hear how much fish there was. How they caught so much fish their nets might break. How they dragged up coral and all manner of things. Now there's not even coral down there. All mud. But they're still angry that the fish are not there anymore.
Makes me think fishers are not very smart.
Similar thing off New Jersey USA. Big trawlers sweep the sea and drag the bottom reducing fish stocks. Smaller infrequent catches in the last 25 years
Catching all these small fishes makes the problems worst and contributes to dwindling fish stocks .Sad
i used to snorkel all over the Greece and its ionian islands, in the latr 70,s and 80,s and almost never saw any fish up to 100ft of water,
Should put the small ones back, if they are a live, and feed the fish , plus re stock the fish if its possible, not just fish for fish or over fishing, soon the fish will be gone, and then what? TH
Krystian Sieminski The kind of fish they catch net does not have much demand and they are not endangered, they are good for fish soup that locals enjoy. The fish they caught using fishing line from the deep are economically valuable fish and they spend hours to catch a few fish this way. The trawlers are the real problem: not only that they harvest a lot of fish they also destroy hatcheries if the go out at the wrong time.
The need a Moratorium on fishing for 20 years. Foriegn Trawlers have to be monitored and removed from waters with force or it will continue.
Same is happing in the North Sea EU fish our waters But SOON THEY WILL HAVE NO WHERE TO FISH AFTER BREXIT GOOD LUCK

Fisherman over fish and there's no fish left.
Fisherman, suprised Pikachu face.
Dams on rivers that feed into the Med. are a major problem. Since the Aswan High Dam was built in the 60s, the amount of organic material and silt delivered to the sea has been seriously reduced and the fisheries began to decline just after. More organic material should be allowed to flow into the sea. Waste food and agricultural byproduct should be spread across the sea, fertilizing it. Establish hatcheries for wild fish.
I was on vacation in Greece and I noticed that is very little fish almost lifeless sea.. If i look adriatic sea we have more life in the sea, but for how long that's the question🙄

actualy the big ships they say take out all the fish are turkish..they illegaly fish all year around and nobody can do anything since they re not in the Eurozone
Actually if they are fishing illegally there is something that can be done. But of course if the country won't pay to have a coast guard to control fishing how will anything be done about it?
@@Jimmy4video The greek coast guard has its hands full with all the refuges coming by thousands due to the tense situation at the middle east. Refuges sink their own boats in desperation so that the coast guard will have to rescue them from the sea. Dozens die every day...The refuge flow is so massive, not only for a small country with economic trouble like Greece, but also for the whole European Union, that Turkey is using it as a pressure point to get a cut on the gas reservoirs inside Aegean Sea along with a cut of land in Syria when the war ends there.
Another great documentary from DW....I love the fact that you show poor working class people from Greece that has suffered financially so much....no one wants to see the out-of-touch bureaucratic elites from Brussels any more
suffered financially because they want a wedding for their daughter... oh god
They suffer because they've raped the environment around them, just like in several parts of the world. Eventually, all humans will start to suffer and it will be a glorious day in my eyes. War will break out for the little that's left and will leave millions dead.
This was very interesting, where I live in New Mexico, one of those 3 Euro fish would cost me 20 USD. Cost so much and terrible quality, nobody buys fish because of it.
Most likely when the DW journalists finished up the documentary and went off the island, the fisherman went after the seals to sort them out. Not to have them mess with the nets again.
Always looking for a big harvest, but never sowing seeds? How long would a farmer last with this kind of mentality?
Not only Greece but Turkey and all the North African countries that border the Mediterranean sea don't have proper control over the fishing. They all over fish the crap out of the sea and now their complaining. They do not enforce any fishing regulations if they have regulations at all.

When they take the boat out and return with 20 euro of fish, it is safe to call 10 euro expenses (fuel and engineering costs). It will take 15 or 20 years of using that boat to reach the EU retirement package of 50K euro. This is something you're only going to do if you love the job. Then again, if you do love the job, you may delay retirement until you got one foot in the grave, and leave the 50K to your kids, as most southern people do anyway. Apparently even a Bible verse encourages people to leave some inheritance behind to "pass on", as opposed to taking your retirement funds to Bora-Bora for one last spin.
