No more fish - empty net syndrome in Greece | DW Documentary

  • The EU says 93% of Mediterranean fish stocks have been overfished, and blames big trawlers in particular. The fish are getting smaller, and some species have disappeared completely. What comes next, Greek fisher Evgenia asks.
Five kilos of fish at three euros a kilo makes 15 euros per day. How can you make a living from it? Evgenia Floris asks herself this question every day. For over 50 years, she and her husband have been fishing on the Greek island of Chios. Although there are fewer and fewer fish now, the Evgenia and Georgios still keep going, because the sea is their life. They used to catch around ten to 20 kilos of fish off Chios in the past, which brought them in a good income. Today it’s no longer enough to live on: sometimes they can’t even afford fuel for their boat. State controls in Greece are virtually non-existent. Evgenia is 69 and Georgios 78, and they both say they will fish as long as they can, but they know that a tradition is finally coming to an end.

There are hardly 150 monk seals left in Greece, and total of 250 in whole Med sea... rarest seal in the world. So they can hardly blame the seal for lack of fish, but they do. And then they shoot the seals - but the fish doesnt “return”. Classic mindset. Easier to blame the first obvious thing, erradicate and think you solve the problem. While the real problem is - that sea was fished and over-fished for hundreds and thousands of years. Instead of allowing for protected areas to recover and re-populate - and in turn increase the surrounding fish stock - they would rather fish out the last, smallest and most juvenile fish they can find. Also - trawlers in Med sea is pure crime.

This does not only apply to Namibia: Large trawlers from the EU member states, Russia, China and Japan have been depleting fishing resources along the coastline of the African continent for decades. Local politicians in the African countries have sold fishing rights and enriched themselves whilst the men and women who have been fishing the waters for centuries on a sustainable scale have been left without an income and / or food on the table. This is but one of the genocidal acts of the G20 nations! I rest my case.

The biggest problem isn’t even the commercial fleets although they are certainly a huge problem. The biggest problem is the universal corruption of politicians who allow the big commercial fleet operators to get away with the overfishing since they are allowing a sustainable resource to be destroyed. Then there is the issue of pollution which is on track to become so pervasive that fish cannot be eaten because of toxicity levels.

It's always: There was so much fish. We caught such big catches. Hey! We used dynamite! Big catch! Where's the big catches now?
Same in my country. You hear how much fish there was. How they caught so much fish their nets might break. How they dragged up coral and all manner of things. Now there's not even coral down there. All mud. But they're still angry that the fish are not there anymore.

Dams on rivers that feed into the Med. are a major problem. Since the Aswan High Dam was built in the 60s, the amount of organic material and silt delivered to the sea has been seriously reduced and the fisheries began to decline just after. More organic material should be allowed to flow into the sea. Waste food and agricultural byproduct should be spread across the sea, fertilizing it. Establish hatcheries for wild fish.

It will take 15 or 20 years of using that boat to reach the EU retirement package of 50K euro. This is something you're only going to do if you love the job. Then again, if you do love the job, you may delay retirement until you got one foot in the grave, and leave the 50K to your kids, as most southern people do anyway. Apparently even a Bible verse encourages people to leave some inheritance behind to "pass on", as opposed to taking your retirement funds to Bora-Bora for one last spin.
