This video serves as a warning, both to you and to me. I expected when I bought two Huawei Band 9’s that their heart rate performance would be as good, or maybe even better than the Huawei Band 8. The Band 9 looks more or less the same as the Band 8, and the Band 8 was one of the top performers in my testing last year. With a lot more time having passed to develop the hardware and firmware, I was hoping Huawei would be able to squeeze even better heart rate performance out of the Band 9, and I assumed it would be at minimum as good as the Band 8. But the saying appears to be true, when you assume, you make an dot-dot-dot out of you and me. Today we will take a look at my initial testing of the heart rate tracking performance of the brand new Huawei Band 9, and you can judge yourself if you are disappointed too.
Now, this is only an initial test, but it was so surprising that I wanted to get this video out quickly. The question remains, why would the Band 9 do worse than the Band 8? Well, one explanation could lie in the sensor set. It seems Huawei changed the configuration of the LEDs and sensors on the back of the watch. Now, this is not my area of expertise, but looking at it you can see the Band 8 has two sets of LEDs on the outside, with the large photodetector in the middle. The Band 9 on the other hand has aone set of LEDs and photodetector very close to each other on top, then another set of LEDs exactly in the middle of the watch with a second photodetector a bit further down. Now, I don’t know how the signals from the photodetectors are combined, but it might be that the software is not optimized enough yet to deal with these two independent signals. However, this does not seem to be the first watch where Huawei uses multiple photodetectors, looking at the back of some of the GT series watches you can also see a symmetrical ring of photodetectors around a central pair of LEDs, so multiple photodetectors does not appear to be a new concept for Huawei. Now, this is all pure speculation, since I am not even sure if both LEDs and photodetectors on the Band 9 are used to measure heart rate, it might well be that one pair was designed for heart rate and the other for oxygen saturation. Still, these initial findings are disappointing, but we will have to wait for my full review to draw any final conclusions.

Rob, I had initially been waiting for your thorough review of the Band 9. But, like you I assumed that it would be at least as good as the Band 8. So yesterday, knowing that your detailed review would take at least a couple of weeks to come out, I placed my order.

I can only hope that Huawei make some firmware changes and improve the heart rate tracking.
It'll be interesting to see if Huawei's claim of improvements to sleep tracking performance checks out.

Huawei needs to explain it's self as I bought this one because of its improvement as stated but eventually not, I did compare it with the Huawei Band 8 and also wore both devices and compare them to a pulse oximeter and Huawei Band 9 had struggles on detecting my heart rate compared to the Huawei Band 8... but I hope updates will fix this issue..

What firmware are you on?
@ If you're referring to the Huawei Band 9 it's HarmonyOS 3.1.0.31 and for the Huawei Band 8 it's HarmonyOS 3.1.0.31

It's a shame. I bought it on launch with an early bird discount. I haven't tested its heart rate tracking during sports but for daily use, it does serve its' purpose. Hopefully Huawei sees your video and updates its firmware to become more accurate... goodness gracious me.
Edit: Having it for about 10 days now as of this reply. This is my first health tracker band and first Huawei band. Battery life is very good, and I hardly ever feel it on my wrist. I'm actually more motivated and strive to exercise more. I don't miss my Garmin Fenix 6s pro at all! I have to say, despite its' inaccuracy in heart rate monitoring, the band functions as it should, which is to motivate me to exercise. I consider it a win, although I do hope that firmware can still be sorted out to get the best value for money regardless.

I'm in the same boat, looking for a rather cheap band mostly for sleep tracking, I went with a used Fitbit Inspire 3, one of the best sleep tracking right behind apple watches, though I haven't gotten my hands on it yet.

I saw your video about the Huawei band 8 and was ready to order the band 9 this week because the price is stunning €49 with promo code. Thank god that i waited...but really what's happening, i thought that at least performance/accuracy should be equivalent. I bet this is software related but either way, gonna wait a couple of months now to see the improvements and hope you further test it. Good work!
they are abusing dumb customers. who always buy the never model regardless if it is better or not becouse they dont realy care about the accuracy. Just look at the Reviews from so called "tech" youtubers who never not even closely talk about the technical sides of the devises and just talk about the outside stuff and software features.
@@fluffypuffyboy586 That's true. This is the only RUclips channel I know of that deals technically with these devices. Which is absurd, after all, all these smart bands have the primary function of being a good health monitor, not a computer or smartphone.

Apple has the best team of engineers.
Apple is the richest company in the world.
When you combine these 2 facts, it's easy to understand why Apple is so far ahead of everyone in the silicon game.
I believe the sacrifice for the high accuracy is power consumption. Although Apple Watches have around the same battery capacity as fx. Garmin and Samsung, the battery life differs by an amount of x4-x20 depending on model and usage scenario. Such huge differences are obviously not something caused merely by optimizing algorithms for consumption, so something else is at play - and I believe Apple's choice of sensors draw more power, and they're activated more often, for a better and more consistent result. However, this also causes excessive battery drain.
If Apple were to offer something like a "Precision" setting where the Apple Watch would poll its sensors less often at the expense of accuracy, I believe they would last 3-4 days instead of the current 1-2 days, bringing them closer to the competition.
@@ihategooogle That is true. It is also true that Apple is kinda of a standard and a trendsetter with the headphone jack; the first Apple watch also removed the charger brick when it was a new iPhone.

Can you post the firmware version you made those tests? The Band 9 I got as gift arrived, and first thing it did was update the firmware. Maybe it got better, or they are still working on it to be on the same level as the Band 8?

I had Huawei watch fit 2 and i find out it's really good in measures hart rate. Then i find your channel and i was happy that you confirmed it's quality. So now i order watch fit 3 because i thought it can't be worth than fit 2. But now i see i might be wrong 😔 i hope software update may improve it

I know how all this bands, especially Xiaomi complete crap but ppl don't knowing for what they need all that sensors watch all that crap reviews about how it looks and no single word about how precise it measures heart rate. I had fit 1 and it's piece of shit. It worth noting. But i bought fit 2 for my wife and decided to try it. I was like wow! It's the same as built in measurements on cycling machine and ticker x. And from my perspective if it drops in price it's must have. It's really good. It's smaller, so for tracker it's +. And it last longer. Fit 3 looks better as watch. But it's bigger and who knows... It may be worse like band 9 to band 8

Despite the negative review, I'm gonna get this watch/band. R=0.99 for running is pretty good. I expect its got better overall sleep tracking than the previous generation as well. This band is not out in my country yet, so if the full review comes out before then and the sleep tracking is also poor, I might just as well go for band 8 or xiaomi band.
Thanks, i ordered the Huawei band 8 instead of the 9. Maybe they will improve the 9 down the road and then i can upgrade to that and hand the 8 down to someone else, but for now i need something that is fairly accurate. I wonder how accurate the watch based ECGs are... i suspect they are not.

that is the most possible cause of the problem, and they might fix it in the next update. huawei often launches their gadgets with software problems and fix it a couple weeks after
