The fact the she took the risk of making a concept like this being a female idol and succeeded amazes me. Moonbyul is really breaking barriers and stereotypes. She pulled it of perfectly, the way that she projects while performing is one of my favorite things about her as a performer. I can really see her winning Artist of the Year and SOTY.

Moonbyul's concept is so unique to be honest. I haven't seen any other female kpop idol do this and pull it off so so flawlessly. It's like she's made for this. Yes!! I’m so proud to say that she is the first female idol to do this kind of concept. She tried to break barriers and even though not many notice it there are probably female idols that really appreciate this because they might want to try it but since it’s a different concept/style they can’t. Is no one really realizing this is the first time in kpop history where a woman kpop idol has released and a performed a song with a masculine choreo LIKE this? Like ya there were girl groups that went hard, but a choreo like this? Never. i think this song speaks a lot about her role in mamamoo, and her personality in general. as said by the members of mamamoo, and other idols, moonbyul really knows how to take care of others. the lyrics tells us about how no matter life has become so dark, full of problems and worries, she won't be defeated by it and will shine for us and her members. she may worry a lot but she often put others above herself. and the song itself is breaking gender stereotypes in music in which we often (fans) see moonbyul do.

I know everyone says this about everyone in kpop but this time I'm serious -- she's doing what no one else is. I've never seen a female idol do this kind of song. She's not just taking a boy group ish concept, she's making her own concept. It's not feminine, but it also doesn't feel like there should be a male idol singing it. It's her song and you can tell, and no one else could do this song like her, male or female.

But I was talking about k-pop, so I think it’s implied that that was the context I was talking about. This is probably the most masculine-leaning concept Ive seen a female idol go for. In other contexts I wouldnt say its super masculine, but in context, compared to any girl groups or female kpop artists Ive seen, yeah, its more masculine than usual.
I pointed this out specifically because its something that iterests me a lot. All my favorite kpop artists, male and female, are doing something that explicitly challenges the heavy gender norms in kpop. So I really like Taemin and Moonbyul, for example, and Id say a big part of why is that they’re doing things that aren’t conventionally gendered, in context. Out of context, Im a very involved member of the lgbt community and Im used to a lot more gender challenging than what kpop has to offer, trust me.

@@kateraspberry7634 So I do disagree with you. I've taken a lot of courses on gender studies and lgbt studies, and although that doesn't give me any authority on this subject, I do feel like I have some idea of what I'm talking about. So here’s what I think:
Gender norms and stereotypes are absolutely connected to terms like femininity and masculinity, but those terms have a function beyond that. A big part of the feminist movement and the lgbt rights movement is based on blurring the lines between gender expectations, and disconnecting sex and gender by defining sex as biological and gender as social, while gender norms are social expectations according to someone's gender.
Expecting a woman to be feminine is harmful. Femininity itself is not. I understand what you're saying about the word femininity being connected to "female" and therefore perpetuating gender stereotypes. I'm trying to find a way to phrase this in a clear way...
These words don't just exist in my head; they still describe relevant social things (just because something is socially constructed doesn't mean it isn't real; e.g. gender). The lgbt community has been based since the beginning on playing with gender. Drag is probably the best example. If you're lgbt you'll probably be familiar with words like butch and femme to describe lesbians who express gender differently, or bear and twink to describe gay men (femme is also a common word to describe straight men who express more femininity than is socially expected of them). Camp is something completely born out of the lgbt community that describes a theatrical expression of gender through fashion and makeup. These are all very, very important characteristics of the lgbt "wave" I guess you could call it, and I think it's fair to say that the lgbt movement has been heading gender revolutions for a while. These things are all based on femininity and masculinity, and specifically using them to do away with gender stereotypes and norms.
I understand what you mean about them contributing to gender norms. But for a very very long time now, they've actually been used to specifically combat these same gender norms, and to be honest that seems to be doing the most effective work up until now. They still describe socially relevant things, specifically *because* gender stereotypes still exist, and they can be and are being used to dismantle those existing connections between gender, sex, and social expectations. And recently femininity and masculinity have also started to blur together, which is also great. Harry Styles in a dress, for example. It’s made a lot of people (including Logan Paul, surprisingly) start questioning what exactly makes someone feminine or masculine, and if that correlates with their gender (it doesn’t). If we refused to acknowledge things like masculinity and femininity, first off, a lot of people (more than usual) would be calling us crazy and unrealistic. More importantly, we wouldn’t be able to play around with gender expectations in a way that has been continuously dismantling them, as we’ve been doing for decades.
This was way longer and less organised than I’d like it to be but it’s really early and I have work in a bit, so I’m not gonna go back and clean it up, but I hope it made sense anyway. You’re obviously allowed to disagree and have your own opinion

If you know how the kpop industry actually works, you know how DIFFERENT this is. As an artist and as an individual she should be praised for creating and delivering all of these. Even if they didn't in the past when it was first releasing, I hope someday soon she'll be recognized and hear the claps that she truly deserves for challenging the industry and becoming part of the wind that should hit it.

You can really tell how much she loved TVXQ if she goes as far as to do this kind of concept. I don't consider myself a moomoo, but I admire them. They look so genuine in an industry that seems kinda fake. I know that they've been somehow "dismissed" and came from a company that is not big, but they have still managed to do their best and they're succeeding. Its the same thing especially from a group with small company. They always get dismissed and considered having less chance to succeed. It doesn't help that those from big company sometimes limits their success too. For me Mamamoo is one of kpop group that follows their own style rather than try to fit the stereotype. There's Hwasa not caring about how knetz bashed her body figure, Moonbyul dressing her comfiest clothes and not forcing herself to dress revealing (like some unwilling kpop gg had too). I started liking them because how genuine they are honestly
