  • The world premiere of The Imposters for solo tuba (2021) at my master's recital.
    Program notes:
The Imposters is a piece I wrote inspired by the heightened levels of it that experienced throughout 2020. Imposter syndrome is a condition in which a person has an intense feeling of being a “fraud” or “imposter” in there leadership position. After originally conceptualizing this piece, I was told of the problematic nature of imposter syndrome-it’s considered a made up phenomenon that disproportionately affects women and people of color because they do not “look the part.” With this in mind, I changed the nature of this composition from the signs and symptoms of the condition to the five types of “imposters”: the soloist, the natural genius, the perfectionist, the expert, and the superhero.
Each movement goes through the nuances of each perspective imposter syndrome type. The Soloist features multiphonics-a nudge to the belief that the soloist can do it all. Movement II, The Expert, portrays the inner turmoil of responding to someone who assumes you’re not the expert anymore. The Perfectionist, movement III, features intricate nearly chromatic patterns, precise rhythms, difficult intervals, and specific articulations to show the nuances a perfectionist must go through (and the ultimate frustration that ensues) in order to maintain an outward level of perfection. The Natural Genius requires the performer to play in two drastically different styles and to go between them fluently to demonstrate the “natural” characteristic. Finally, the last movement, The Superhero is self-explanatory as it requires an astounding level of technique from the performer throughout the most extreme registers of the instrument.
