I remember in 1967 my father's mate bought a 1949 Panther M100 (600cc) for £5.00 in Halifax. The numbers in M100 and M120 are the length of the stroke in millimetres.
I rode one of these in the late 60s with a child/ adult sidecar attached. As you say if you set all the levers just right it was fine to start up but if you got it wrong it was drastic. My husband tore a ligament off his ankle chipping a bone in the process. I used to stand on the kick start with the other foot off the ground and bounce on it. That way if it ever kicked back I just got lifted into the air. I loved that bike.
Lovely bike mate - I had one a very long time ago with a chair (sidecar) - yours looks a few years 'newer' - mine looked like a pile of scrap but worked fine - (50+ ys ago) - had it maybe a week and such a bike wasn't especially inspiring for me at the time - Cafe racer or suchlike was more the thing for all the small windy roads etc.. I remember the Panther though and recognise the sound. That long stroke single ride. Again, that is a beautiful clean bike you keep there. Great you posted it. Thanks
Lovely! I`ve always hankered after one ever since I broke down on my old Bantam riding back from college and a chap on one of these stopped to tow me. So far have only managed 500 thumpers...Rudge 500 Special/Yam s XT & TT 500s....maybe one day :)
Aye, get it into top - one thump per lamp-post - and head off for a quiet day over the moors. Mine sported a Busmar double-adult conservatory, sorry, sidecar which was great for long distance runs. Heavy rain? Pull off and dive into the Busmar - open the Thermos - and tuck into fish-paste sarnies washed down with a lovely cup of tea. Homewards in the evening and listening to the sound of the twin exhausts echoing back from the walls of the streets of terraced houses - magical music.
Cool bike, must have a stroke a yard long. It's also nice to see someone start a thumper who doesn't have to take 11 mini-jabs at the kickstarter and three minutes to get it started.
It will roll right off from stopped at that idle speed if the clutch is released carefully. OF course normally you would not do so, but it can do it if you wish.
BEAUTIFUL OLD CLASSIC . SICK OF TODAY'S SO CALLED CLASSICS . TRIUMPH HAS RUINED THEIR BIKES . UGLY . THE NEW BIKES LOOK LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN A MOTORCYCLE AND SOME MOTOR SCOOTERS . UGLY SEEMS TO BE THE LAW. THIS PANTHER IS A REMINDER OF WHAT A CLASSIC REALLY IS.

BSA are introducing a 650cc single "Gold Star" in March 2022.

Aah, you really had fun with yours - a real owner. Mine was a brief transition. Great story brother
