    Just start drawing. Don't overthink it too much just put down a line. See what happens. If you mess up you mess up. Not a huge deal.

      messing up also gives you more motive to bring out your creativity, like if you mess up something, you have to think creatively on how to fix it, and thats really great

      I just noticed this reply, anyways like a year ago I had a small cheap sketchbook where I had one rule/goal: Only draw in pen. It worked not in the sense my best work was in there it just forced me to accept my mistakes and keep moving forward. Since it was cheap I didn't feel bad about ruining the pages and since it wasn't my regular sketchbook I didn't have to show anyone.
      Or you could always do the challenge of making a random scribble and turning that into a drawing, if the page is already "ruined" you can only make it better from there or say you tried.
      The 1st line is always the hardest.
      These are at least things that helped me at least.

    Always try to create OC's (Original characters) This not only pushes you out of your comfort but forces you to be creative and come op with a character thats all your own. This can also help develop your style of drawing- when you aren't focusing on other peoples work it helps you to create your own unique look- Hope this helps!

    I've been trying to improve my drawing skills by following these youtubers and people online. And everyone of them says to draw everyday and to just never stop. I thought since they did it and they were better artists than me I had to do it to succeed. This made me HATE drawing! everything I drew i thought was absolute shit and i never wanted to draw again. I went on a compete break from drawing for about a month. Slowly I got back into it and started drawing at my own pace. I draw when I feel like it and go at my own pace, I can draw all day or maybe not for a whole week, either way I have seen more improvement in myself then ever before.
    (Moral of the story is not everything works the same for everyone!! If you feel like you're doing something wrong because its not what someone else is doing than don't! Do what you have to do to improve)

      There's only one way to improve: practice. If you want to live from drawing, you have to be able to draw many hours straight and everyday.

    • @Oleeh-oleeh
      @Oleeh-oleeh 7 лет назад +2

      Jayne Tofer I personally think that most beginners can't draw everyday because for an inexperienced hand it's just exhausting and also drawing all the time can get frustrating. It's just like in sports, if you start a sport you should probably just do a bit of medium intensity three times a week or something like that and as soon as you get stronger and faster you can do it more frequently :)

    • @JasDreamx
      @JasDreamx 7 лет назад +2

      I also just draw when I feel like it (which is very often, but when I don't feel like it I may end up not doing anything for a few days or a week) and it's good for me. I think everyone should just work when they feel inspired or if they want to, like just go with the flow and how you feel and everything else will fall into place.

    • @yumiyume4200
      @yumiyume4200 7 лет назад +3

      Jayne Tofer You should not believe practice makes perfect, you should practice and know what you are doing. You should know how long your energy for drawing lasts and only draw in the time. I heard this on a talk by another artist

    Good tip: Don't go in order if you give up on sketchbooks too easily. I usually tend to give up on sketchbooks when they feel ugly. when your flipping through you always go through the same pages and that can feel really boring. I noticed that you don't really have that when you go out of order. It really reduces the "stress",

    Sketchbook suggestion instrutctions
    You'll need a jar,paper and a printer (usable)
    1. Print out 3-6 30 day drawing challenge sheets
    2. Start cutting all of the drawing challenge days from the printed drawing challenge
    3. Once your done cutting all 30 challenges from all the challenges you printed fold them all in half
    4. Than put them all in a jar
    Fun part don't limit yourself to 1 a day some days I use 3 someday I use 1 it depends but it helps art block :)

    Re: Collageing: If you're in school and you doodle in your class notebooks... cut them out and paste them in your sketchbook! Wait until the class is finished, of course, but DO IT!! It's a great way to save your best doodles (because lets be honest, sometimes your margin doodles are awesome), and you can compose them on your pages by theme or by color or whatever. My favorite way to do this is to cover a blank page (or a bad page, a page of crappy notes, etc.) with a watercolor and then paste the doodles on top. Looks A+ amazing.

    Sketchbooking is a lot of fun, it is a playground for the brain..It helps me a lot to think of the sketchbook as if I were making a monthly magazine. I have a name for it, so that it ties the separate sketchbooks together into a series. For some people, that might make it too formal, but I find a little structure helps. Each sketchbook also has it's own title and I do an "Editor's Note" on the inside front cover, and a closing note on the inside back cover. I pick a few images that I'm always working on, each sketchbook has them: a self portrait, 1 Elvis, 1 Buddha, 1 Anglerfish, 1 fox and at least 1 cat. No more blank book blues. It's really satisfying to see them accumulate on the shelf after they are finished. Also, it's okay to be bad, that doesn't last long. And, I steal a LOT!! But, whatever I steal I change, and do it in my style. As I get better, I'm starting to see more original pieces arise just from imagination.

    I enjoyed this video, as somebody who struggles with wanting everything to be perfect. My drawings showed technical skill, but weren't expressive at all. One thing that helped me (start to) overcome that is to have multiple sketchbooks. I have one that is "perfect", that I only use 2 or 3 times a month (4 or 5 hour drawings) because I have a full-time job, and others where I do things like blind-contours, drawings with my non-dominant hand, or timed drawings. Since there's no expectation of perfection on those, I don't worry about them. Also, they're the sketchbooks I get into more often because they're 5 or 10 minute drawings. Over time, this has worked its way into my "perfect" sketchbook, which is a little looser than it used to be. I know a lot of people like to crank out one book at a time, but I personally love chipping away at multiple books... and I almost always put the date on them... even/especially the crummy ones.

    I recently went through a severe artist block and I didn't have any commissioned work to keep my eye trained so I picked up a sketchbook for the first time in 4 years! I applied what you and a few other artist have said about experimenting and keeping your work loose. I have to say it has totally changed my outlook on how I make my art. I was strictly into realism but now I appreciate just sitting down and relaxing when I draw, not sticking too closely to a reference photo is liberating.

    Love this video. I noticed each time I go to draw I would get a pit in my stomach and feel overwhelmed when I had yet to put the pencil to the page. I didn't realize why until I sat with myself a bit and saw how afraid I was to draw/afraid to enjoy drawing (weird I know). So I have pushed myself wayyyy outside of my comfort zone and have purchased a bigger sketchbook and am starting to make projects for myself since there are no art classes near me. This video and watching other sketchbooks definitely gives me inspiration for how to fill my own, and also how to overcome the anxiety I have with art.

    Great video! I've started keeping sketchbooks since about half way through the summer and dating them. I go through about a sketchbook a month- granted, it's a 5/11 40 page book(which is a little closer to 70 or 80 because I use both sides not all the time but often) and I do 2 or 3 pages a day through the school day and after homework. I draw in pencil a lot more now just because that's all I have normally at school but looking back when I was just using pen or colored pencil I find myself erasing less now and focusing less on petty things that I can play with when I just want to practice that thing. The best thing about a sketchbook is the awesome texture when it's done!

    honestly, if you're not comfortable working in a sketchbook, i used to get a packof printer paper and a dollar store folder. then i could draw on the paper and put it on the other side of the folder, and i didn't have to look at other drawings i didn't want to see until i went through the folder, and it's pretty cool.

    Best thing for me take is everywhere
    I take mine to school, when I meet friends, in the car when I wait somewhere and doodle stupid things in but cards or Photos in and this makes it great.
    And if a drawing isnt that good this things helps making it better

    For those people who really wanna make there sketchbook look neat I would try doing a rough sketch on a different piece of paper first so u have a general ideas of what you're going to do.

      +Kanna Sama I get what you're saying, but doing practice drawings elsewhere is only going to make you feel like your sketchbook pages need to be perfect. I'd say sketching lightly, inking on top, and then erasing away the lines would be the cleanest way to do it without restricting yourself.

      +Biana Bova I've recently tried playing with a black painted background (with India ink), and sort of doing a silhouette thing with white acrylic paint. if you mess up your can of course just go back over with ink and "erase" your messed up line. it could be could practice for someone looking to improve lineart. :) it sort of confines you to only lines to work with.

    I have this sketchbook I really hate and I really wanted to get rid of it but I didnt want to. So I decided to draw in pen because at the time I hated drawing in pencil (the lead would smudge everywhere 😩). And after 3-4 months, I'm almost done with it :). Its more of a scrapbook than a "sketchbook" but I'm happy with it. Sure I'm not happy with 99% of my sketches but tbh I'm just happy that I'm almost done with it instead having it thrown away ages ago.

    I have a little tip
    Try and get something with a cover you can paint or put stickers on
    My favourite brand of sketch book is the pink pig but more specifically the water colour ones, my local art store only sells the ones with this sort of felt, fluffy cover? Idk how to describe it but you can't really paint of put anything on it witch bothers me to no end

    Its kinda hard if you bring your sketch book to school.. because a lot of people just steal your sketch book when you aren't looking and start looking in it. Then they start making fun of your art if its not 'perfect'. That's what causes me to rip out pages, or wanting everything to be perfect. I tell them to stop, but then they are like, "Then why do you bring it to school?" I bring it to school because I don't have time after school and usually the only time I have to draw is in class when I finish my work early. That's why. I also have a friend that's in all of my classes that does art as well, and if she sees one wrong thing in my book she points it out and laughs at it. Of course this is extremely embarrassing because I'm not amazing at it, not yet at least. But she isn't either. But I compliment her, not bring her down. People laugh when they see mistakes in my art saying things like, "what the heck is that?" Or, "Why is her shoulders lop sided?" "Why are her boobs so small?" "Why are her legs so long?" And it just brings me down SO MUCH that if I mess up even a little, I either erase the whole thing, or I rip out the pages... it's a definite struggle😔 any tips on being more confident? Or something to say to all the haters? I want to be more confident in my art, but I don't really know how to do it....

      Jabber Box I have the same problem. It really demotivates me at times but I try to think about how I can fix those mistakes.You could buy a cheap sketch pad for school and rip out the pages you drew on at home and then glue them into your actual sketchbook.I don't know if that works for you but you could try it :)

    • @ladyofcrows
      @ladyofcrows 7 лет назад +1

      Don't let the haters get to you. Remember that your sketchbook is for YOU, not for them. And if people keep being overly critical of your art/sketches/collages/etc. just tell them you're practicing; of course it's not going to be perfect! And if they keep bothering you about it, have an art war! Ask them to try and draw the same thing. ;) If they are a good artist, maybe you can learn from them. If they just scoff at you, then they can just stuff themselves because at least you are making art instead of being an idiot. Recap: it's for you not for them. Don't let people's criticisms bother you. Maybe you can learn from it.

    • @brydenvargas9863
      @brydenvargas9863 7 лет назад +1

      Jabber Box So annoying when people do that, the point of a sketch book is for practice and sketching, so of course things aren't going to be perfect. Unfortunately no matter how good you are, kids at school will always try to put you down, so you got to just tune them out. I remember when I was younger, even when you don't make too many anatomy mistakes classmates will bring up other things to criticize, like the subject matter of your drawings. So yeah, just remember that you could have the most amazing art ever and these people would still probably complain.
      Also, for your friend, try critiquing her art, and if she responds negatively, use that to point out how it feels when she does the same to your art.

    Hi! So I am trying to get better at my drawings and my geometry teach bought me a sketch diary and a sketch book. this video has helped me a lot but I don't like drawing in front of people and when I get home from school or practice I am practically brain dead. so what exactly can I do to get better at my drawings? also, I grew up drawing manga but I want to try other things like american cartoons and realism. is there any tips you way have for me?

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  7 лет назад +2

      Caytlyn Collins Totally get you on wanting privacy to draw 😰 What I do is try to discreetly draw in the back of class, go to the library and sketch in a cubicle, or sketch under a nice tree during lunch. I know school can be super exhausting, but definitely get in the habit of drawing even for just 30 mins before bed. Doodling in a sketchbook is fun and therapeutic, so you might actually find yourself relaxing more! And as for manga to realism--this is HANDS DOWN the BEST tutorial to use. It has like 15 parts so you'll have to hunt a little but here's part one: foervraengd.deviantart.com/art/MANGA-to-REALISTIC-PART-ONE-215317699
      Good luck and have fun drawing!! :D

    • @ravenfodder1754
      @ravenfodder1754 8 лет назад

      +Jessie Fox It is so sad that people think they don't need to work traditionally. While it is not absolutely necessary, digital art affords to many shortcuts and "cheats" that end up hindering less experienced artists. I not suggesting you are less experienced because I have no way of knowing, but I read this kind of comment so often it makes me cringe. Practicing digital art will not always make you a better traditional artist, but practicing traditional art will ALWAYS translate into better digital work. You should totally get a sketchbook and try it out.

    When I'm going to store I have 2 types of sketchbook to choose. One of them is sketchbook with yellowish, thin paper and second (that I'm using) have great paper but this sketchbook is only for sketching with pencil. We don't have any watercolor/mixmedia sketchbooks or even paper. I hate this. I'm tired of using one type of paper and I want to experiment with other things. I know, I can order it from internet but that's not the same and it cost more. My country suck.

    Where I go to buy my sketchbooks, there's not a lot of variety XD I usually get a small, 100 page sketchbook, so that way I can take it with me wherever I go. I tend to draw a lot, lately 2-5 sketches a day because schoolwork is boring haha. It's gotten to a point where I don't know where to put my full sketchbooks anymore!
