When I draw something that sucks, I stick it in a box labeled "Look at these in a year." Because I know in a year I'll see how much I've improved and be proud.
Juankook I know, I think it's important to compare your work in order to grow, but I don't think you should compare negatively. 😊 Criticize yourself constructively, don't put yourself down or you'll feel discouraged.
Another tip, don't try to make a masterpiece if you lack the ability to draw the average characteristics in a good drawing, this will only make you become frustrated. Don't expect a masterpiece if you haven't been drawing and learning for a good amount of time. Edit: this is sort of harsh, let me rephrase it. Don't feel bad if you can't make a piece that you like immediately, because practice is something needed to create art. If you really want to get into art, expecting good results too quickly may break your confidence. You must remember that no good artist starts out perfect, no good artist starts the same way they end up.
PrimaDove Not really. It's true what they say. The more you overestimate yourself, the less you will improve because you will start to lack the passion as you get frustrated with not getting done the piece of art you want.
Feather Heart Yeah this is very true, at least for me. This is one of my major problems. I always want what I'm drawing to turn out amazing and perfect and when it doesn't I get upset and stop drawing. It's something I trying to work on actually. I also have trouble accepting imperfections, thats another thing I'm trying to work on.
I don't mean to brag, but these are literally all my goal, I learnt these from other artist 's inspirational videos. It's so important to draw real things, real people, drawing straight from cartoon or anime is a way to limit yourself, love your tips, keep it up Alice ;)
Artgurl xo I actually in a different state of mind than the comment sound like, it's been a while, but I think I kinda mean like I know all the tips already, (which can lead to the "bragging" situation, like people will think that I mean "these tips are so easy, how anyone didn't learn it yet XD) I make the comment as nice as I could so it doesn't contain my idea from the beginning :3
I think another important piece of advice is to really take into account how you are positioning your hands and body. If you aren't careful, you can really hurt yourself by not taking care of your hands. Drawing from the wrist is bad over time as it stresses out the joint and can lead to carpal tunnel and other painful conditions. Giving yourself regular breaks, hand/wrist stretches, and doing more movement from your elbow and shoulder can do a lot to prevent injury. Having your work space at an angle instead of flat on a table can really help too. Not taking care of you hands can eventually lead to being unable to do what you love, so it's very important to learn this as quick as possible! It's advice I wish I had listened to sooner; wrist pain makes it difficult for me to work on anything for extended amounts of time. On another note, lovely advice in this video. I think it is something I will share with anyone I know who is trying to get into making art as I never have the words to express what you have said so well. : 3
this video was so great, and I'm adding tips for people who also like digital art: - there are plenty of free softwares, do your research and figure out which program works best for you - LEARN ABOUT LAYERS (seriously I had a hard time with this one) - tablets can be really expensive, so I recommend going to art youtubers who have been sponsored by companies and you can get a discount - even if you want to work digitally, pls learn traditional first (this is kinda like the fundamentals she mentioned in the video) - tell the people who say digital art is not real art to fuck off
eh I don't say digital art is fake or easier, i just feel jealous that you can just undo some things. Its as tricky as anything else really. But i personally prefer traditional coz of that paper smell.
I was really shocked when i started reading the comments of the video and i was really confused by how can someone think this is offensive? I'm a beginner and of course not all this tips would work for me but why to consider that offensive? this girl is taking time to help US beginners and artists in general, she's trying to help and if the help doesn't work for you just don't take it, her intention was good and that what counts! Thank you alice for doing this for us, your words are so motivational and as always you brought me such an amazing help! btw the drawing is stunning!
I say that Tracing is OKAY. If you post it, credit the artist but I learned how to draw from tracing and now I'm fairly good at it. People always say "Oh, you can't draw if you trace, you're just copying people. It's not real art." That may be the case, but you can still LEARN from it. Let people learn and teach themselves.
i think i disagree... it's probably okay for children to learn from doing that, but it's so important to draw things yourself if you want to make true improvements.
Actually, anyone can trace as long as it helps improve your drawings. Like I said, I learned from tracing, and I sometimes trace things when I don't understand how to draw them.
Everyone learns in different ways. I learned to draw through tracing, then moved to visual replication, and then to drawing my own stuff. Finally I arrived at trying out different mediums and finally setting on charcoal as one of my main mediums. It is a very valid way to start if that helps you. If only it makes you want to draw more, then that is helping you. Tracing inspired me to draw, so I started drawing. If I hadn't started with tracing i doubt I would be where I am today. I doubt I would have ever seriously drawn.
LeadPencil-223 To be honest with you. I think tracing is a good idea. It's kinda like when your teacher gives you the answer to your math problem, and you need to find the right path to find the answer he or she had. So I completely agree with you statement. But we have to learn how to draw these things without tracing them sooner or later.
I don't know how you had the sidecut in the sketch exactly in mind, but try to give her some hair at the back of her head next time, that makes it more realistic :) (trust me, I have a sidecut myself hahaha) Also: great video, love the tips
Thanks for the help! In my head I was imagining that she has half her head shaved and half not, with like a side part? But I totally see where she should probably have more hair down at the back. I just sort of started to draw it, I probably should have looked at references xD Sidecuts are so cute, I keep wanting to draw them so I appreciate the tip!
during the video, i just thought the character had an undercut? a sidecut probably should have more hair in the back, but undercuts typically don't! : D
I relate so much to what I'm about to say. HOLDING A DANG PAINT BRUSH IS SO FUDGING HARD LIKE PROPS TO YOU IF YOU CAN HOLD A BRUSH BC IM SITTING HERE LIKE HEEELLLLLL NAH
EVERYONE TAHT COMMENTED TO THIS I LOVE YOU Le MooMoo I LOVE UR BLURRYFACE PROFILE PIC Unwanted FanTrash TABINOF IS LOVE TABINOF IS LIFE Msp Hacker Hunters LEAFYYYY Kayla Is Satan L FROM DEATH NOTE
I know that feeling. I thought joining deviantart would be a good outlet, but if people don't like your art they just don't say anything, and if they do all they say is "it's good." There is no real feedback :/ That's why I am taking college art classes, I want to be corrected! I need to know an honest opinion.
Destinee Duran It's almost like we need art autocorrect. So then when it changes it to something "correct", you can change it again because it is wrong and you know your original thing was what you wanted. Or you can let it be, because the correction was correct. And then you learn from that mistake.
Maybe you can create, or join a group on social media like Instagram or Facebook that's about art, there'll be people there who are willing to give criticism, that helped me a lot, or if you are not scared, ask your art teacher 😊 (btw, I know I'm late to reply but I thought that it could help)
My name is Juliet and I am an aspiring artist . I'm only 12 but I totally understand more than adults think I do . I absolutely love your channel and have grown as an artist from ok everyone can draw tht status to alright I think I have something special here . These top ten tips have helped me sooo much . I literally have shelves of overflowing sketchbooks now 😂 anyway thanks for all the help Love Juliet xx❤️
To people getting offended... She's entirely right. When drawing as a hobby, it's fine to disregard these TIPS (not orders nor strict rules), but when it comes to a career in art - there are regulations. It is a very competitive, very unstable, very difficult career. I myself am no artist - i like to draw but there is no way I am cut out for a career in art. However, I am seeking a career in the theatre - which is actually a much more stable career (that's saying something). Therefore, the complexity of an art career entirely astounds me. Work hard and dream big - but do be realistic. Good luck!
Alice I am so thankful for you. Your art has inspired me so much. At the beginning of my 6th grade year I was afraid to open up and sketch during art class. I had my art teachers look over my art and she said "You have Potential, just believe in yourself." I searched up some art videos on RUclips and you were in my recommended. I tapped on your video and it started playing, as I got into your video I sat down in the middle of art class and started drawing. A kid I didn't know said "Wow you're so good" now I feel I have more confidence. Watching your videos inspire me everyday. I can't even say how thankful I am for you creating this amazing RUclips channel and just being the person you are. I love you so much❤️❤️❤️
You are amazing Alice. When I made my first comment I was still fresh into art and my art style was all over the place. They had little to no detail and didn't look that great. Today I can do portraits that are almost life like because you gave me the motivation and the encouragement to keep drawing. I stopped for a long time and over the last 2 months my ability to draw and sketch has changed drastically because I would draw every day no matter what it was. I look up to you. You are an amazing person, artist, and someone I am proud and grateful to have learned from. I may not make a career from my art but I can now put my visions on paper. All thanx to you, Alice. Thank you so much for making these videos. You encourage young artists like me to keep drawing even when its hard. I am eternally grateful.
This is a very helpful video as one of my new years resolutions is to improve on my art, particularly anatomy. Thank you so much for uploading this video, it has shed some light on how I should go about things and improve my art for not only myself but my youtube channel too!!! :)
Everytime i feel like im not improving or feel like giving up i come back to this video, theres just something about it that always motivates me to keep drawing and doing art
.... I just realized... I never sketch at home... but when its school i am always Sketching instead of Paying attention in class.. Hm.. that might explain something about me.. Probably that i just don't care as much as others :D I will forever be alone.. ;D ... CriEveriTim
Great tips! I know a lot of people don't like to hear that classes help, but if you can, classes totally help! Even for people that don't enjoy class environments like myself.
These are really good tips. Sometimes, as a beginner, it's easy to try and compare yourself to others and get discouraged at mistakes. But this is a good reminder to let go of that 😊 I love the pink hair 😍
*(Gets inspired by the video)* Alright, I can do this. I'm gonna draw everyday, try as hard as I can to improve.. Let's do this.. *(half way through the first drawing)* alright. It looks terriable, but I'm gonna continue.. If I work really hard on it, this will surely get better.. [4 hours later, the drawing looks like it was made by a 6 year old] *(Takes a deep breath)* Oookay, this didn't go so well, but if I practice everyday, I'll surely get better! [3 years passes, *no improvement* whatsoever] *(Rage quits)*
Truth be told, you aren't going to improve in 3 years. You aren't even going to be producing great art in 10 years. I'm 23 this year and i've ALWAYS been creative, i've always enjoyed the act of drawing. From drawing circles with lines on the top for hair and a basic smiley face as heads to drawing anime and been able to replicate anime/manga work if its in front of me. I'm self taught and honestly? I only recently started feeling proud of my progress and my work. I started taking this seriously over a decade ago. I can still see many areas in which I need to improve. I draw multiple pictures, filling up whole pages in my notepads almost every single day for over 10 years. Everyone tells me my artwork is great and is good enough to be published, but I don't see that, I don't think it's nearly good enough yet. There's still too many inconsistencies in it. You've got to really put the effort in, art is something you've got to dedicate your life to. If something isn't working, try something else. Practise. Not by drawing full art pieces and hoping they turn out good but practise by learning the basics, the fundamental shapes of the objects you want to draw, learn to see the things you want to draw in the shapes that make them and not as the object as a whole. Draw pages and pages of hands in various poses until you get sick of doing so and repeat for all other parts of the drawings, then keep doing it. That's the only way you'll truly improve.
Just a suggestion- have you tried Deviant Art? its like social media for artists, and you can request critiques, and even join clubs dedicated to giving critiques.
I actually learn so much from your video's, not only the tips, but also when I'm watch you draw I learn little things that make me a better artist. like how you do the nose and mouth for an example.
These were amazing tips!! It's exactly what I needed to hear, because I always worry about the final result, and want everything to be perfect straight away, it's almost like I'm too impatient to get better, that's something I need to work on. And not worrying about my style! I was so worried and I wanted to find my style, but realising that I don't need to stress about it, helps a lot!! Love your videos and love that they're more frequent right now. You are so talented, love you!!
Yes. This. I used bases for years in my teens and the only thing it ever helped me with was how to draw different types of clothing on the body and even then not so much that I couldn't have learnt it elsewhere much faster.
Great tips! One thing I also found was when drawing from a reference photograph it really helps to take a picture of your work and overlay it in a program such as photoshop to see where your piece and the actual reference differs. It definitely helps with placing and proportions :)
Can't remember the name, but there is a program that shows you a fully functional 3D model of a person where you can choose the lighting, pose etc. so those types of things are good if you cannot attend a figure drawing classe. I'm lucky enough to have my college provide them as part of my Game Art course.
This opened me up. Hard work and practice does really pay off, and being open can help you improve much more than locking yourself from others. Thank you for this amazing video, this really helped me a lot!
You are the the one who inspired me to create art in the first place I watched others but they just weren't like me, there tips never worked for me however when I saw you suddenly I started creating more and more art and now I discovered that art is my hobby forever I love it soooooo much it's my favorite thing in the world, the galaxy, the universe
Ur probably looking for an answer from the creator of the video but, i'd say YES!!! Definitely. The earlier, the better. You don't have to go too much in depth with your anatomy yet, but learning the basics is a great idea ^^
Yes. I didn't really start to learn anatomy until I was a good maybe 4-5 years into taking art seriously and I still struggle with it over 10 years on. Learning it as soon as possible will definitely be a big step in improving your art and remember, never give up. You may or may not like what you produce but one day, maybe in 5 years, maybe in 10, maybe even in 20, the day that you look at a piece of work and can see it for how good it is, will come. If you ever get discouraged, don't worry, we all do sometimes. The trick is to not let that stop you doing what you love.
Shadow Hime As a fellow 12 year old, yes, it will. Anatomy is just breaking down the human body into smaller pieces that you can study one at a time. If you spend enough time looking at and studying the basic concept of the human body drawing it will come to you naturally, or at least more naturally than if you don't. I've always been interested in anatomy and started learning it when I was 6, now I am a lot farther ahead than most people my age when it comes to drawing, not trying to be rude. So, in short, yes. Learn anatomy, please.
That was really helpful. You inspired me to immediately go learn about anatomy. You also inspired me to lay off the graphite, and look to my water color paints. Thank you.
I don't know why but i love your voice 😂❤️ I loved the tips! I always have trouble accepting it when people say im a good artist, or when they say like "oh your so good! I can't even draw a stick figure!" Then i wanna scream "BUT YOU CAN DRAW" and then i point out all the things or mistakes i made in the drawing.
cheetahgaming10 panda I can give you some tips, if you have Instagram, follow me @makrochann. I might not be the best artist but I feel like I can help you :)
cheetahgaming10 panda okay so I'm currently 13, when I was 11 I was horrible at drawing, but now I am fairly good and most people I know say I'm amazing. I've been drawing consistently for around five months now and my art style has changed so much and it's crazy. Practice practice practice. It doesn't take long for you to become better. It is hard though.
Your voice was just so sweet, I wanted to watch the video until the end while drawing that beautiful picture. This is the first of your videos I had the pleasure to watch and I ensure you this was the first of many ones for this new subscriber.
Not to be rude, I loved the video but uh focusing on your style is very important. The fundamentals are very important to learn but focusing on keeping your style smooth is important.. :T
This video is primarily for beginners! :) Focusing on your style is important, but I think too many artists get wayyy too hung up on it when they're starting out, and they will find out their style will evolve and change SO much as they grow! I'll make a whole video about style later though! It is important, but at the beginning i think it's good not to stress about it and simply focus on learning :)
HulloAlice oh, understandable! Thanks for clearing that up. I'm so stoked you replied. It's great to know I've subscribed to someone who replies to their fans :3
Welcome to the Wonderland Fam!!! I try to reply when I can, especially to questions or misunderstandings!! I try my best to encourage and support all of my subs whenever I can
the tips look helpful, your attitude was kind and upbeat, and the drawing while talking is a great and creative way to keep a viewer stimulated and focused at the same time. 10/10, bro.
Great tips, especially the one about practicing constantly. It's hard to get into the habit of drawing every day but I have watched loads of artists on youtube start to do this challenge and improve drastically. I think this has a lot to do with your next tip, as artists we really have to let go of perfectionism and the fear of making something "ugly". In the end it doesn't matter what the picture looks like, just that fun was had while it was made and that the picture might be able to communicate something.
Excellent tips! Not getting bogged down playing the comparison game is good to keep in mind too; that can be so discouraging. Love the piece in this video by the way!
They are definitely just jealous. They see you are happy doing art so they want to take your happiness away because they are not happy. Make them even more jealous with your skills as you continue to get better :)
Just keep doing what you love, I mean no one is born with a talent, you learn and that is how you get the talent, so keep drawing and you will be an amazing artist one day, I mean no one should be able to tell you to stop doing what you love
This video is amazing, it really helped me. I never look at anatomy but now that you've explained how it is so important I am gonna try and get better at it. I'm a self taught 12 year old artist and I wish I could give up sometimes because my 'friends' don't like my art because its not up to their standards. I am very stubborn so i hate when people criticise my art so it gets me down and i feel like i suck and that I'm never going to get better, but this video helped inspire me to keep doing what im doing. Well done. Oh, BTW that watercolour you did was really good. :)
I'm very open to criticism. but most of the time my sister forces me to show her my pictures. and she looks at it and just gives me a weird face. and i know when she looks like that she doesnt like it so now I just dont show anybody my pictures
Ofc... Never give up.... '' Before giving up always think why did you held it for long nd just continue to do your work "..... Great tips...👏👏.. Really helpful
Eh... There are kind of rules. Even the most abstract piece needs balance and appeal. If you're drawing people, even cartoons, there's anatomy, structure, line of action, posing. There are rules, the funny thing is a lot of them you would follow without even noticing. Because the main rule of art: be proud, have fun, make it great :)
Wow your my favourite artist RUclipsr. You have showed me that not all artists use copic markers. Some use pencil crayons (I'm Canadian) and get just as colourful work! You have inspired a new subscriber.
Sorry but I do not follow Rule 2 beacause I am a very huge fan of Undertale and wanted to draw all characters. Anyways, my style in Rule 6 is #UndertalePixelArt. Rule 7 is I learned from Toby Fox. Check his project in www.kickstarter.com/games/undertale. Rule 8: I do not follow this rule beacause I have 0 hate and 7.5 billon likes.
ALL EXCELLENT ADVICE. ... Thanks for sharing. I myself need to be reminded of most of your top 10 on a regular basis. lol never give up, never surrender . THANKS
Alice, you are truly amazing. I think I really figured out my style today. It makes me so happy. I think I'm becoming a true artist. Now for my tip: Use multiple things. I'll sketch something on neon paper so I know it's not the final draft. Then, I'll make it better digitally. I'm still working on it, but I'm willing to put my all into being an artist.
This inspired me so much to continue my quest on being an accomplished artist. I, for one, really love art but want to pursue something else as my career. Thank you for all the advice!
Thanks for mentioning live models, we have a great respect for artists that do their best and want to learn from life. I appreciate the vid, keep it up!
This was so helpful and encouraging! Giving up is the worst thing anybody can do with a special talent that they have it if hey have a hobby or interest that they like really well.
I wish this video came along a few years ago lol These tips would have motivate me to be more daring and take chances. I was one those people who is scared to make mistakes and such, and scared to try anything new. because of the mistake thing. I was so scared to try anything to the point my growth was very slow or probably at a stand still. but round 2013 I slowly started to draw a bit more and started to grow bit by bit. Looking at tutorials and trying them, even picking up a trick or two. Surely but steady my drawings look better over time. Beginning of last year, I started to work at an art store and man its bad! cuz I keep buying stuff in there! XD Now I have watercolors, gouache, color pencils, inks, copics, and so forth. I'm trying all these things and starting to mix them together a bit too. Before buying these, I look up these items and wonder if I can do that too. Sure it was to begin with but I'm getting better using them. I feel it's the greatest achievement I ever have done. The only thing that is hard is colors and types of paper in sketchbooks. lol
Well - I certainly have no trouble with following tip 3: Practice. I draw daily whenever I can unless I suddenly run out of ideas which is very occasionally. I also used to get in trouble for drawing all the time in class at school when I was suppose to be working! Lol. I even draw on serviettes at restaurants if I have a pen but no paper. I just love to draw. I've managed a few paintings as well with acrylics mostly, but I have tried watercolour and it does have a really nice look once you know how to use it.
Love the drawing! As a watercolor lover, I didn't know watercolor pencils existed! Thanks! :) I agree with your criticism point. It stings a LOT and makes you feels shitty, but I promise you that once you learn to accept other point of views, youll see how much experience you gain from evaluating your art. And then youll show everyone because you WANT their feedback (to the point where they say "OMG Awesome!!" and youll be like ".... thats it?") -From one newb to another
the criticism tip is so true!! I was visiting my mom (who is a doctor) and started drawing, she pointed out some anatomy mistakes, which I fixed making the whole drawing better!
I really liked your #9 tip. Saying that you don't have to have art as a career and sometimes your job is something you do to support something you truly love. I've been so stressed out lately my career and if I want to pursue art as a career, I'm just so worried about how to make a living off of that. That little piece of advice really made me feel better thanks :)
Thanks! This was great for me cuz I've been a little down and haven't really had the time to practice the basics like hands, feet and hair and I feel like I'm bad at making originals. But I'm gonna keep it up and practice more! Thanks again!
Thank you Alice!!! Your videos are really awesome! I love the way you draw! I loved the drawing of this video so much I redid it in my own sketchbook. I hope you keep doing such great videos!😁
Just subscribed and already loving your videos. I personally loved this video because it opened up my eyes a little and helped me see things that could help my drawing.
I'm glad I'm heading the right way. I'm still stuck on fundamentals, what I want to point out with my art (although not everything can be this easily read), the positivity and the critisism. I'm stuck on people not giving at all or avoiding my question on what they think. Maybe they're scared of my response, but I am the one who has to learn from it not? So I need to accept it. I've always felt like giving up throughout the hardest time, but I really want to continue my work and be able to write out a story on it as I am already filled with a stable idea.
When I draw something that sucks, I stick it in a box labeled "Look at these in a year." Because I know in a year I'll see how much I've improved and be proud.
That is SUCH a good idea! I love it! I'm actually going to pin this because I think it's such fantastic advice for new artists.
Feather Heart good way to think about it I may start doing that
Feather Heart I need to that! great idea!
I sort of do that too! Except it's my old artwork from when I was a few years younger and you definitely see a difference~
Nevaeh Williams Yes. Of course it is, as this is my suggestion for everyone. :)
Accepting imperfection is really hard for me.
Dawnleaf TheOnly my strange addic-
AAAHHHHH YOOUU HAVE THE WRONG ACCENT
Wut?
Natasha Reeder same, sense I'm a perfectionist, "o that head looked like a potato I have to change it" xD
same i'm slightly OCD and a perfectionist so it's really hard
Natasha Reeder just imagine that when you have OCD... which I do.
I also think it's important to not compare yourself negatively with another artist and their work. 😀
You can compare your art to see what are you doing wrong. Also set a goal like "I wanna be as good as him/her".
Juankook I know, I think it's important to compare your work in order to grow, but I don't think you should compare negatively. 😊 Criticize yourself constructively, don't put yourself down or you'll feel discouraged.
I understand why you say that, but sadly i can't apply it.
Jade Thoe أنتم بتحبوا العرب صح
Romane Leunis neither can I
This was such a good video! Thanks for the great advice 😄👍
omg Vexx? THE Vexx!?
sumi cassie Yesss 😱
hahaha! you're awesome man, just letting you know ;)
sumi cassie VEXX HEY DUDE
I love your art. I aspire to draw like you.
Feather Heart bit harsh for early artists don't ya think?
PrimaDove Not really. It's true what they say. The more you overestimate yourself, the less you will improve because you will start to lack the passion as you get frustrated with not getting done the piece of art you want.
Feather Heart Yeah this is very true, at least for me. This is one of my major problems. I always want what I'm drawing to turn out amazing and perfect and when it doesn't I get upset and stop drawing. It's something I trying to work on actually.
I also have trouble accepting imperfections, thats another thing I'm trying to work on.
THANK YOU THIS WAS A GOOD TIP
I am guilty of this fact and I completely agree with you.
I don't mean to brag, but these are literally all my goal, I learnt these from other artist 's inspirational videos. It's so important to draw real things, real people, drawing straight from cartoon or anime is a way to limit yourself, love your tips, keep it up Alice ;)
Giao Nguyen How are you bragging?
Artgurl xo I love how both the comments have 40 likes XD
Artgurl xo I actually in a different state of mind than the comment sound like, it's been a while, but I think I kinda mean like I know all the tips already, (which can lead to the "bragging" situation, like people will think that I mean "these tips are so easy, how anyone didn't learn it yet XD) I make the comment as nice as I could so it doesn't contain my idea from the beginning :3
THIS HELPED! *2 hours later is frustrated cause the eyes don't match*
Spoder man relate
My struggle is the feet man....those gosh....darn....f******....feet
StudlyFudd13 ugh the struggle
The struggle.... Ugh... 😑😒😔😞

this video was so great, and I'm adding tips for people who also like digital art:
- there are plenty of free softwares, do your research and figure out which program works best for you
- LEARN ABOUT LAYERS (seriously I had a hard time with this one)
- tablets can be really expensive, so I recommend going to art youtubers who have been sponsored by companies and you can get a discount
- even if you want to work digitally, pls learn traditional first (this is kinda like the fundamentals she mentioned in the video)
- tell the people who say digital art is not real art to fuck off
~Cecilia~ there's people who say digital isn't real?
Claryssa Crapo yes. My mom says it's way easier because you can move parts and erasing is easier.
eh I don't say digital art is fake or easier, i just feel jealous that you can just undo some things. Its as tricky as anything else really. But i personally prefer traditional coz of that paper smell.
The whole time I was just like "yes, yes, preach girl, preach!" Really really love your tips here 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
YAS GIRL THX
Jcapri me too😂
Jcapri I subscribed to you 😂
Emily H Ah, thank you!
This was super helpful and detailed as well 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I totally agree, really helpful.
(Btw i love ur channel xD)
Thanks Zyra!!
Zyra Bañez I subbed to your channel!

Exactly, I learnt how to draw semi-realism through tracing.
i think i disagree... it's probably okay for children to learn from doing that, but it's so important to draw things yourself if you want to make true improvements.
LeadPencil-223
To be honest with you. I think tracing is a good idea. It's kinda like when your teacher gives you the answer to your math problem, and you need to find the right path to find the answer he or she had. So I completely agree with you statement. But we have to learn how to draw these things without tracing them sooner or later.
I don't know how you had the sidecut in the sketch exactly in mind, but try to give her some hair at the back of her head next time, that makes it more realistic :) (trust me, I have a sidecut myself hahaha)
Also: great video, love the tips
Thanks for the help! In my head I was imagining that she has half her head shaved and half not, with like a side part? But I totally see where she should probably have more hair down at the back. I just sort of started to draw it, I probably should have looked at references xD Sidecuts are so cute, I keep wanting to draw them so I appreciate the tip!
during the video, i just thought the character had an undercut? a sidecut probably should have more hair in the back, but undercuts typically don't! : D
Yeah.. When i has sidecut my hair "started" lilbit afther my ears
Freyja's Shieldmaiden I’m so glad I saw this I love drawing characters with this type of hair this is really useful thanks
I relate so much to what I'm about to say.

I need people to criticize my work. Everyone is just like its sooo good. I don't care. tell me what's wrong with it!
I know that feeling. I thought joining deviantart would be a good outlet, but if people don't like your art they just don't say anything, and if they do all they say is "it's good." There is no real feedback :/ That's why I am taking college art classes, I want to be corrected! I need to know an honest opinion.
Destinee Duran
It's almost like we need art autocorrect. So then when it changes it to something "correct", you can change it again because it is wrong and you know your original thing was what you wanted. Or you can let it be, because the correction was correct. And then you learn from that mistake.
Destinee Duran exactly! Same!
Maybe you can create, or join a group on social media like Instagram or Facebook that's about art, there'll be people there who are willing to give criticism, that helped me a lot, or if you are not scared, ask your art teacher 😊 (btw, I know I'm late to reply but I thought that it could help)
You should try amino that’s where I ask people about my art
My name is Juliet and I am an aspiring artist . I'm only 12 but I totally understand more than adults think I do . I absolutely love your channel and have grown as an artist from ok everyone can draw tht status to alright I think I have something special here . These top ten tips have helped me sooo much . I literally have shelves of overflowing sketchbooks now 😂 anyway thanks for all the help
Love Juliet xx❤️
i was at my desk and saw the thumb nail and was like " pssssshhhhh i could draw that ..." *tries* " what monstrosity have i created 😨"
I love you so much❤️❤️❤️
Hi :)
I really like the color combo you used and the combination with text on the screen! Very visually appealing. Keep up the good work.
Probably that i just don't care as much as others :D
I will forever be alone.. ;D ... CriEveriTim
Catrin Johansen Literally, I am the exact same 😂😂😂 I am always drawing on my homework or on my notes, but I don't sketch that much at home
Catrin Johansen same, at home it's like I have art block but at school I just want to draw everything all the time XD
Catrin Johansen exactly at home I watch videos and at school I take out paper and just start drawing XD
Catrin Johansen i can relate....
Catrin Johansen same
I ask for criticism but never get it. Friends don't wanna give it to me strait and strangers are danger😢
Just a suggestion- have you tried Deviant Art? its like social media for artists, and you can request critiques, and even join clubs dedicated to giving critiques.
SimplyUnicorns05 I have. All of those actually 😖
Nice 👌 so much is gonna get pointed out. I suck XD
WaffleQueen
i would ask my parents for criticism but..
Yeah.... XD
I suck at painting but I'm great at doodling with pencils.
What an inspiring video!! I'll definitely save it to rewatch it later when I need more inspiration! +.+
My only problem with it is that its only for adults. It's hard for younger people to get help from it
I actually learn so much from your video's, not only the tips, but also when I'm watch you draw I learn little things that make me a better artist. like how you do the nose and mouth for an example.
Anyone else slightly offended in this video? Not hating just stating something. Loved the drawing tho.
XD Why are you offended? And glad you like the drawing!
KDgamergrl yeah same kind offened
not really...
How though?
I too am confused
These were amazing tips!! It's exactly what I needed to hear, because I always worry about the final result, and want everything to be perfect straight away, it's almost like I'm too impatient to get better, that's something I need to work on. And not worrying about my style! I was so worried and I wanted to find my style, but realising that I don't need to stress about it, helps a lot!! Love your videos and love that they're more frequent right now. You are so talented, love you!!
I see someone who is possibly Sombra *clicks on video*
Gaming with Monstar Lol, same.
isnt it her though? lmao
Nope, total coincidence! xD
shy no
I thought the exact same!
I absolutely LOOVE YOUR NOSES! They always turn out beautifully, especially in this one, where you get a side view.
Pro Tip: DON'T USE BASES! Use references.
Yes. This. I used bases for years in my teens and the only thing it ever helped me with was how to draw different types of clothing on the body and even then not so much that I couldn't have learnt it elsewhere much faster.
Soft and neat
What's a base?
what does that mean?
why?
Great tips! One thing I also found was when drawing from a reference photograph it really helps to take a picture of your work and overlay it in a program such as photoshop to see where your piece and the actual reference differs. It definitely helps with placing and proportions :)
What type of color pencils did u use
Tranice _1215 prismacolors
Those pencils are the Fabre castel polychromos.
Tranice _1215 they look like Derwents
Inktense pencils? It looks like she added water
Alice your a real inspiration for me. You calm me down all the time a specially when I am studying. Thx sooooo much. You are the colour of my picture.
The drawing remind me of ihascupquake's new hair style😂
Anna Strelec ikr
This video hit me on a personal level..so inspiring!!! And your drawing *oh* *my*... and the colouring *drools*
looks like sombra , haha. It's really good though!
oooh yesss, want a widowmaker drawing
You are the the one who inspired me to create art in the first place I watched others but they just weren't like me, there tips never worked for me however when I saw you suddenly I started creating more and more art and now I discovered that art is my hobby forever I love it soooooo much it's my favorite thing in the world, the galaxy, the universe
I'm only twelve, do you think learning anatomy early will benefit me in the long term?
ArMy!! Also yes it will really help! I’m 13 and learning the anatomy is really good💜💜
That was really helpful. You inspired me to immediately go learn about anatomy. You also inspired me to lay off the graphite, and look to my water color paints. Thank you.
I can't help but think of you as an artist Junko Enoshima...your voice just sounds a lot like hers
*from the English dub of danganronpa
Ayeeeee
dub... why..... ;-;
I'm 11 and love art however I can't draw😞😭 its my dream to draw like this what do I do?
cheetahgaming10 panda I know it may sound a bit painstaking, but Practice. Use reference too!
cheetahgaming10 panda I can give you some tips, if you have Instagram, follow me @makrochann. I might not be the best artist but I feel like I can help you :)
Marina Reinheimer okay Thx both of u I will check It out
i wasn't good at 11 i got better u just need practice + patience
cheetahgaming10 panda okay so I'm currently 13, when I was 11 I was horrible at drawing, but now I am fairly good and most people I know say I'm amazing.
I try my best to encourage and support all of my subs whenever I can
HulloAlice what if I draw since I'm like 2 years old and I still don't know how to have a god style
HulloAlice Thnks so much! Your much kinder than so many people. I was just cyber bullied so I need a nice reply like this. So thank you
the tips look helpful, your attitude was kind and upbeat, and the drawing while talking is a great and creative way to keep a viewer stimulated and focused at the same time. 10/10, bro.
This looks so much like sombra from overwatch!
Am I the only one who draws SO GOOD if I stop drawing for a long time? Then I draw so crappy when I PRACTICE ALL THE TIME?
Excellent tips! Not getting bogged down playing the comparison game is good to keep in mind too; that can be so discouraging. Love the piece in this video by the way!
i like to draw but kids in my class say that i cant make art or do anything
Mackenzie Realee Don't listen to them! They're probably just jealous.
They are definitely just jealous. They see you are happy doing art so they want to take your happiness away because they are not happy. Make them even more jealous with your skills as you continue to get better :)
I am so sorry, keep doing what you love and don't listen
slap them
now
Just keep doing what you love, I mean no one is born with a talent, you learn and that is how you get the talent, so keep drawing and you will be an amazing artist one day, I mean no one should be able to tell you to stop doing what you love
Thank you! Ahh this was sooo helpful!! The final picture you drew was beautiful by the way.
it's ihascupquake :0
Mike F. my best friend used to do that to me but I have to be honest it kept me drawing and definitely helped me improve my art
Ofc... Never give up.... '' Before giving up always think why did you held it for long nd just continue to do your work "..... Great tips...👏👏.. Really helpful
"It's really important to learn the rules before you break them" *there are no rules in art
pretty pop I think she meant anatomy and art basics, like rythym and balance.
Marina Reinheimer It doesn't matter if you know the basics if you like whats on the paper than its art.
There are no "art basics", unless you want to be an another drawing machine.
Locket Angel There aren't. Art could be anything
Wow your my favourite artist RUclipsr. You have showed me that not all artists use copic markers. Some use pencil crayons (I'm Canadian) and get just as colourful work! You have inspired a new subscriber.
a lot of these are really hard for me
Being an artist can be really hard, you just have to push through!
THANKS
Am I the only one who thinks the girl in the drawing looks like a Goat?
Nooo, I agree😄
midna0midnight I look like a goat.
Oh, .....
midna0midnight that is my cousin
zeldatransformed not even in a mean way but she really does
Alice, you are truly amazing. I think I really figured out my style today. It makes me so happy. I think I'm becoming a true artist. Now for my tip:
Use multiple things. I'll sketch something on neon paper so I know it's not the final draft. Then, I'll make it better digitally. I'm still working on it, but I'm willing to put my all into being an artist.
I bet this comment will get lost in the other comments and have 0 likes......
I like it!
This inspired me so much to continue my quest on being an accomplished artist. I, for one, really love art but want to pursue something else as my career. Thank you for all the advice!
The picture you were drawing looked like Sombra...
Tis Sombra
Just wanted to thank you for this video
Thanks for mentioning live models, we have a great respect for artists that do their best and want to learn from life. I appreciate the vid, keep it up!
This was so helpful and encouraging! Giving up is the worst thing anybody can do with a special talent that they have it if hey have a hobby or interest that they like really well.
These were very straightforward and helpful tips. Thanks for the video!
I wish this video came along a few years ago lol
These tips would have motivate me to be more daring and take chances.
XD
Now I have watercolors, gouache, color pencils, inks, copics, and so forth. I'm trying all these things and starting to mix them together a bit too. Before buying these, I look up these items and wonder if I can do that too. Sure it was to begin with but I'm getting better using them. I feel it's the greatest achievement I ever have done.
The only thing that is hard is colors and types of paper in sketchbooks. lol
I just love how you did the hair for this one!
Thanks! :)
I agree with your criticism point. It stings a LOT and makes you feels shitty, but I promise you that once you learn to accept other point of views, youll see how much experience you gain from evaluating your art. And then youll show everyone because you WANT their feedback (to the point where they say "OMG Awesome!!" and youll be like ".... thats it?") -From one newb to another
As she was talking about the basics of art, my mind immediately went to my art class and what we learned in the beginning of the year.
Thank you! Great tips! Love your channel and art!
the criticism tip is so true!! I was visiting my mom (who is a doctor) and started drawing, she pointed out some anatomy mistakes, which I fixed making the whole drawing better!
This has been the best tip video I've seen all day.
Thank you so much for making this.
You are an amazing artist! Omg I can’t even explain how glad I am to have come across your RUclips channel! Your soooo freaking good!❤️
Thanks! This was great for me cuz I've been a little down and haven't really had the time to practice the basics like hands, feet and hair and I feel like I'm bad at making originals. But I'm gonna keep it up and practice more! Thanks again!
Your tips are so helpful and so inspiring
And you are amazing
Thank you Alice!!! Your videos are really awesome! I love the way you draw! I loved the drawing of this video so much I redid it in my own sketchbook. I hope you keep doing such great videos!😁
I've never seen watercolor pencils used before!!! Have to get! Love the artwork, looks like I've found a new medium to play with!
Thanks for sharing! I'm a painter and tattoo apprentice. Always learn new stuff!
As an artist, I think that these tips are great!
Just listening to Alice makes me draw better! Thank you so much!
Just subscribed and already loving your videos. I personally loved this video because it opened up my eyes a little and helped me see things that could help my drawing.
Thank you so much for the helpful tips! I really did hear stuff I hadn't thought of before, I appreciate it :)
Tip number four really hit me! Thanks Alice :)
this is so inspirational! i love how it was a mix of actual tips and inspiration 💕
Thank you so much! I'm an aspiring digital artist/painter and this truly inspired me. You've earned a new subscriber! :)
