  • This is the original pilot of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss", which aired on July 11, 1987 on NBC.
Brian Austin Green was, in essence, the "lead" student in the pilot, as Adam Montcrief, a particularly serious student, who wore business suits.
Several other characters from the series existed in the pilot but were played by different actors; Mr. Gerald Belding was played by Oliver Clark, and Miss Tina Paladrino was played by Maria O'Brien.
Although Hayley Mills was the only actor to survive beyond the pilot, her character in the pilot was named Mrs. Davis.
I've uploaded this because the other copies floating around on the net are very poor quality (even for RUclips), ie: low frame rate, blurry image...etc.
I've uploaded this video untouched, directly to RUclips the second I got my hands on it. This is probably the best version that you will ever find anywhere else.
This pilot is extremely rare, as it was only aired ONCE.
    Enjoy the Nostalgia. :)

Wow. I certainly went down the rabbit hole tonight. I was on the Peacock streaming and wanted to read the history of GMMB. Saw there was a pilot with other characters. This show would have never made it on cable or network. Glad some execs saw the potential and retooled it. Wish Hailey Mills had made the second retooling but it wouldn't have been the same.
It is great that at least one person taped this and kept it all these years so it could be uploaded to RUclips.

It was definitely a little too dark, serious for the era. Had this came along around 1993 or 1994, it would had a shot. Disney/NBC was not a good network for it, it felt more ABC-ish with the theme music and feel

its funny how sitcoms change from concept to realization. There was nothing really wrong with this pilot. It was funny, silly, dramatic, tense, and sad. It had humanity. However, SBTB was cool because the characters were all charismatic, zany and just plain fun to watch.

@@bratton79 right, this show had heart and soul and a message of inclusion and caring. What happened with Saved By the Bell, was all of the worst of poor production, divisive and hokey nonsense, giving a few of them a big head and even now to his dying day they shunned him and Lark with her battle with mental illness is really similarly forgotten. I mean what happened with those kids was pretty absurd and disgusting.

This pilot was definitely more adult oriented than Disney version of the show and of course, Saved By The Bell. This was the era when NBC aired pilots for midseason replacements in the summer. In July 1990, NBC aired the pilot for Blossom which featured 'Bobby Brown's My Prerogative' as the theme song which was later edited out with the instrumental used at the end. I'm assuming it was a musical rights issue that prevented it.
Another fun fact is that Nickelodeon made an original series for network television (a first for the time) with Hi Honey, I'm Home. The show aired on Nick at Nite as their first original produced series that pay homage to old sitcoms and ABC aired it in the summer of 1991 and ultimately canceled the show.

Great comment! I remember oodles of shows premiering on NBC back in those days with very few of them ever panning out. A lot of the time, like with this show, I just never made the connection.
Personally, I think the premise of the plot in this pilot was just a little bit too intense for a prime-time sitcom time slot. It also helps that, given the state of acting in general on television at the time, that they got a bunch of kids who actually could (for the most part) act.

    • @GSU2004

@@bjohnkautzman1041 Shows were more happy go lucky back then, had GMMB aired in the 1990s, it probably could have made it as is. People love to watch shows about public sector workers where they are humanized like cop and law shows. A few teacher shows like The Steve Harvey Show and Boston Public showed teachers in a good light as well.

@@GSU2004 I think you nailed it. This show looked like it was trying to recreate Head of the Class with younger kids. Head of the class was a decent enough show, but I think the primary reason why it didn't catch on is because it was kind of boring.
You can't have a kids' show be boring and expect it to be successful.

It's weird that they created a series for Miss Bliss, a recently married woman that was still going by her maiden name. I'm guessing the producers/network thought the same thing and scrapped the hubby in the actual series.

I took it as a nod to the growing women's lib movement at the time where you had women who were married but keeping their maiden names or still going by maiden names in their profession. Even Golden Girls was pioneering for its time with a group of single women who were living their best life in their elderly times

I would have paired this show with Valerie (assuming Valerie and the suits would never had their spat that ended up changing that show many times) as it would have been a better fit. NBC could have branded it as the Working Women of Monday Nights (Valerie at 8, Ms. Bliss at 8:30 followed by the Monday Night Movie, join us on Mondays here on NBC!). Saved By The Bell could have been a spinoff in Season 1 as a backdoor pilot. The principal would had a different name like Mr. Smith.
Here's how I would have done it
"Saved By The Bell Part 1" April 1988
Miss Bliss travels to Bayside High in California where she's on the shortlist of being the new principal after Mr. Belding is offered a new job at central office. She quickly realizes that Belding belongs at Bayside and she belongs at JFK based on how students take a liking to them in each scenario. However her and Belding also have careers and families to think about. The Bayside crew is also dealing with having to write a tough history paper along with a major English exam.
"Saved By The Bell Part 2" April 1988
Miss Bliss strongly has second thoughts about becoming a school principal. After shadowing Mr. Belding, she realizes she's in an office and meetings all day than in the classroom. Belding realizes at Central Office has very little interaction with students and think his impact in minimized. Students at JFK and Bayside both miss their beloved figures. After consideration, Bliss and Belding realize they need to be back in their school buildings.
Screech, Zach, Slater, Lisa, and Kelly are introduced for the first time. Unlike a normal GMMB episode, the focus on SBTB is more on students interacting with adults in the background.
    Season 2 Premiere of GMMB:
"See You In Homeroom Miss Bliss" September 1988
Miss Bliss is now a department head at MLK High, the feeder school for JFK Middle. Several of her former students are elated to see her and she mentions she got the promotion over the summer where she can do the best of all words--teach, administrate and help students. Bobby struggles with having to take a new honors class where he finds himself being a basic student who is competing against smarter kids. He wants to get into a regular class and Miss Bliss tells him to tough it out and do his best.

I think this could’ve worked. But as someone else mentioned with the other car. Family Matters probably wouldn’t have made it past season 3...if that, Sea Quest probably wouldn’t have been Sea Quest, & I probably would’ve never watched 90210 due to Brian Austin Greene character got into drugs. I never knew 90210 had serious stuff. I just thought it was overly preppy nerdy & boring stuff. Not to mention when Tiffany Thiessen joined the show. I loved watching her play someone completely different than Kelly on SBTB.

      @GSU2004 3 года назад

Family Matters was ABC's answer to 227 but the first half of season was forgettable until Urkel came and the rest was history. Just imagine if Jaleel was on GMMB and they had some other character as Urkel for Laura's date, I think it would have been canceled midway in Season 2 after the first 13 episodes of that season (similar like That's My Mama, they would have changed some things around, it wouldn't have worked and booted it goes over Christmas)

I agree, but at the same time SBTB(the real one not the retooled version of this series)had those OOOOOOHHH's whenever some kissed or flirted and it was really annoying, even when I was a kid, they did have some good dramatic episodes, but they tended to be interrupted by a stupid laugh track. This pilot seemed to not do that(even the series that did air from this was more mature, than what would become SBTB). Is this on the DVD set for Season 1 of SBTB(that's how it was released)?
