Amazing how the book lovers honed in on get rid of books!
I didn't have a choice when we down sized. But, I didn't call it 'getting rid of my books'. I called it sharing as they went to libraries, my cancer infusion center, senior centers, libraries and yes some went to Goodwill so they could be shared with the less fortunate.
They will end up there some day anyway, because the kids these days mostly don't want them.

    • @erinteague9604
      @erinteague9604 5 лет назад +3

Goodwill charges WAY to much to really go in the hands of people less fortunate. Ive looked at the prices in Goodwill over the last few years & totally stopped shopping there. As a single struggling full time server & part time student, I couldnt afford Goodwill anymore...I go to smaller thrift stores that are with cancer/kidney foundations. Youre on the right path with the cancer infusion center..look to smaller thrift stores that will charge $2 or less 50cents for those treasured books..I try to donate to the women living in battered womens shelters, I give my clothes to Teens in the foster care system after seeing a drive for prom dresses once. Halfway homes getting young people back on track will love your books, work appropriate clothing ect..Mothers helping Mother's literally NEED everything in your home you can donate..furniture clothing ect..

I have books that I have read a ton of times. I can't tell you how many times I have read Pride and Prejudice, Catcher in the Rye, and so many others. There are books that are a part of me and of my journey through life I have lost count of how many times I have read some of them. It's great to donate books if that is what you want but donating them because they are "clutter" is messed up. Books are not for decoration they are for learning from, inspiring and enjoyment. The idea that you should have books with "decorating" in mind is ridiculous and a little shallow. If you don't have room then use the public library, we are so fortunate in Canada to have such an amazing and generous public library system. So use the library till the cows come home but keep your favourite books, stories, etc. at home on a shelf where they are handy for when you need a pick me up from your favourite author.

To 'keep' books - one solution to consider - one long shelf at the top of the ceiling (12" or so from ceiling) along the whole length of the room, even several walls if needed. Looks cool and doesn't take up floor space, and can be accessed when needed.

Somebody said get rid of the junk mail, ads. You really need to open every single letter. Here’s what I’m talking about : I got a letter from BCBS insurance. I don’t have BCBS insurance anymore. I only opened it because the envelope was large and I use those for my grocery lists. I would’ve thrown away a refund check! It happened again recently when I had paid an overage on car insurance. I started to throw it away bc it didn’t look like the envelope the insurance payment came in. I assumed they were trying bundle something or whatever. That one had a refund check, too.

I know I have too much stuff and am trying to combat a shopping addiction. I have new young grand babies that I am lucky enough to get to see them almost every day. It seems an obvious choice to help my daughter and her babes rather than do circles in my home/clutter b. But I seriously need help. Oh ya, I am poster child for ADHD.

I keep a medial binder with copies of my scans (scan cds) and tests. You could have sections for blood tests, medications and doctor visits. But I honestly only really needed it during cancer treatment and seeing new surgeons or doctors. Now it’s easy to access most of your records online but is probably good to have hard copies just in case your hospital of doctors office doesn’t remote back up your information and something happens to the building.

    • @sarahb1867

The first part is about paper:
1:33 Have one “home” (inbox) for paper
2:17 Go through your inbox once a week and deal with the paper
2:37 Tracy summarizes: Have a home (inbox) for papers and sort through them once a week.
3:11 Put the papers you are keeping in a binder with tabs, sorted by category.
      Books are discussed after that.

Books. We have some 'family books' that we have to keep. (either it is about our family or written by a family member, or signed, or were favorites of great grandparents - classics/academic, which are historical. Then there are books that I want my granddaughter to read as she gets older - about our country, or famous people, or philosophy/wisdom, growing up, life lessons, finance/budget/economics, etc., that I keep. I keep the classics - Atlas Shrugged, Gone with the Wind, Tale of Two Cities, Charlotte's Web, etc. There are books that represent my education, and who I am and what I believe in, people I admire, etc., for reference and referral in conversations, to lend/share, and as a scrapbook when I die, of 'who was she?'. These all, I want to keep. I don't have 'fiction' per se, or just 'beach reading' or James Patterson/Nora Roberts type books, but would give to friends if I did. I have reference books - dictionaries, recipes, 'how-to', etc., but I guess that all can be obtained 'on-line' now - so those I might be able to get rid of. I don't have really any other kinds of books - but if I did - donating to the library is a great solution.

The receipt thing is ridiculous. If you're using a sheet protector for just three receipts that's crazy. Just make envelopes with the names of the stores you shop in frequently: CVS, Whole Foods, Stop & Shop, Home Goods, Marshalls, whatever...then make envelopes for restaurants, gas & doctor bills...store them in an accordion file. As for paper clutter/mail. If you put it in a basket, then you don't know when it's due. Open it, and put it in your calendar or an accordion date file for when it is due. Otherwise, you won't know when it's due if you leave it stacked. Kudos to the host. She's great, bright and beautiful.

The covers can be cool, but I think it is a neat idea to have backwards books for some people. Amy Landino, a productivity RUclipsr, does it that way because she likes the content but can’t bring herself to clash the bright neon colors with her white and rose gold room. It’s cool because it gives people a way to have books in a neutral color scheme, opening up the book world to people who may not like the aesthetic so much. However, I too like to check out the covers, and the only books I would put that way are books I don’t really like enough to check the covers.

I think it's better to use a large coupon organizer for the receipts. I have used the mail organizer system but it doesn't work in my house, my family just puts mail on the nearest table. If you have a family living with you just know as a mom you'll be the one putting away everything where it's supposed to be. Period. It's true everything needs a home and you'll need wisdom to figure out how large of a storage and where to put it. It's just frustrating because it costs a lot of money shopping for storage bins and figuring it all out.😩

4:49 = worst advice I ever heard about cleaning. I love having books, I want to own a library of my own one day, made up of my favorite stories like the Harry Potter series, and educational books like the four agreements or spiritual books like War Room, and my study bible. Why would I want to get rid of them?! No thanks, if you can’t come up with a better organization solution that allows me to keep what I need and most of what I want then it’s not going to work. This advice is better suited for a minimalist or someone else. Not for people who collect books. I would never buy books just to decorate anyway.

Makes complete sense for most people; however, there are some people like myself who "need" a physical reminder that a bill will be due soon.
I've tried reminders on my phone but with the push of a button there gone.
I've tried calendars on the wall but after a few weeks the calendar becomes an item in my house I am used to seeing and it often goes overlooked.
I've tried many things but nothing compares to a physical bill.

@@billielittle Why is it necessary for you to insult & demean people who do something different than you? I read your comment about your strategy but it didn't occur to me to write and say that you are wrong, you shouldn't do it that way, etc., just because your method doesn't work for me. I don't think my way of doing a task is "The Only Correct Way" so I would never denigrate you for doing it different than me. Does it affect you in any way how I deal with bill paying? No it doesn't. Nor does it affect me how you pay bills. So, can we please each go our own way, do our own thing, and nor insult each other?

@@kismyc0untryazz-491 Thank you. This is what works for me too. Recently my phone company started emailing my monthly bill. But didn't tell me. Suddenly I started getting phone calls about my 'overdue' bill -- let me say here that I always always always was very organized and paid all my bills on time...when I received them in the mail -- and the calls threatened me with fees, etc. I thought that maybe my check had not reached the company, but when I called to find out is when they told me about the automatic billing. I indicated that I did not agree to that -- for the obvious reason at hand -- but they said I had no choice. I did eventually find the email among my 60,825 emails! That is why it doesn't work for me.
I applaud other people who have different 'systems' that work for them. And just want to be left alone to do what works for me.

Telling people to get rid of their books is not smart. Books are a treasure that we can go back to again and again for inspiration, they are very precoius. She is contributing to the dumbing down of the USA when she tells people not to keep their books - I don't know how I would have survived without mine. DO NOT listen to this bad advice.

Xtine Johnes agreed. I do not give away books, cds, movies etc. that l seriously & truly enjoy no matter what prof organizers say. I like prof organizers & I take some of their advice, definitely not all. U can always revisit a book, song, movie etc. at another time in ur life & see or hear something totally different that u didn't notice 1st time around. I'm very good at keeping my stash organized & donate all kinds of stuff quite a bit. But if l enjoy it, I'm keeping it. It takes 2 much time & energy to replace certain things with no guarantee of finding it again. I'm a music collector & they're some cds/songs r hard to find. I'm not getting rid of no collection l put alot of time & effort into just to save space. I'll create space somewhere else. So l do what works 4 me & l don't do everything that alot of them suggest cuz that's all it is, a prof suggestion.

Xtine Johnes take a look at the video again, because you didn't understand it. Of course you can keep your most valuable and favorite books and donate the others TO SPREAD THE KNOWLEDGE. Not "dumbing down" at all, but exactly the opposite.

    • @XtineJohnes
      @XtineJohnes 5 лет назад +6

Actually, you should keep ALL your books as they are one of the most valuable things your family owns. I know exactly what she was saying, to get rid of supposed "clutter" which she believes includes books and that's just not smart, nor is it a good to promote the value that books are "something that could be considered clutter" or "something you should get rid of". Books are treasures to be preserved in the family Library.

    • @claudiapenaranda5592

Xtine Johnes, that's XVII century thinking, when the books, by themselves, were "wealth indicators". It's not the same situation anymore. This is the XXI century and most part of the books can be better transmitted in digital format, avoiding the hoarding and keeping only the most important and beautiful ones on proper display and the valuable information still preserved.
Take this advice in order to save yourself of very complicated movings trying to accommodate 5 trailers of such "family treasures", hoarded during +100 years, into a livable space. A nightmare.
Around 250 really valuable books are a reasonable amount of paper to take care of. In this case, more and more is not the better.
Be generous with your local cultural societies (you can even just lend them a huge quantity of your books), save your personal space and keep the knowledge circulating.
