For my travel kit, I love my Artist Loft spiral bound cold press cellulose book. I know how the paper behaves and it’s great for me on the go. Wouldn’t do a big masterpiece with the paper though. At home, I love my Arches, but I don’t take advantage of that kind of paper in the car or waiting for an appointment. My favorite travel brush is my Faber Castell water brush. Have other ones too for different sizes, but that FC one is my fave! At home, I have a lot of brushes, but gravitate towards my Aqua Elites, a mix of Master Touch brushes (fake squirrel and regular), and one random Mimik from Creative Mark. Have a few quills, both MT and one Princeton Neptune, still learning them. Before those, used Royal Langnickel and W&N for ages. For me, it’s all what I’m used to and expect from the brush.
That's really the key. What you learn with is what you'll be able to execute with. I think that's why I love water brushes so much. I used them for years and I know exactly how to work with them. 👍🏻
I purchased a set of round brushes from fuumuui, the people said it was the best brushes they ever used, blah blah blah, they look the same as these ones and I had the same results as these ones. They have been collecting dust in my art room for the past 3 years. Rosemary and Co, Princeton have great brushes. I was amazed at how good the Rosemary and Co brushes are, the first time I tried them I said that those are going to be the brushes I'll keep buying for the rest of my life. Once again , thank you for another honest review. You should do a painting of a person riding a sable, omg you crake me up Pete!
I just snagged a set of Mijellos Two Tone Granulating watercolors with Tourmaline in them off of EBay. I can’t wait to try them out. They are new relatively. I feel like those would be right up your alley! If you like what you see, I vote a review or first impressions video! lol I’m excited for mine to come hopefully before Christmas
Ride a sable. LOL 😂 I have had brushes that dump the water like that. It’s so very aggravating. I think I’m too old to remember the game “Cooties”. Loved the piece. I guess it’s a cootie..LOL. I’ve never seen a cootie.😮 Wonderful Video, as always. Thanks for that, Pete.
My early attempts at watercolor were unpleasant. It never occurred to my young brain that it was the poor quality of the brushes! This was a great demonstration. 😊😊
"You don't worry about that, I'LL worry about that." I don't think you even said that full sentence but I hear it every time you tell us not to worry. 😆 I also started saying it to people lol
@@IllustrationsByPete sometimes I'll hear it when I'm overly worried about something and it strangely makes me feel better. It's okay, Pete's got this 😆😆
Ive used a horse hair brush for Chinese brush painting or Sumi-e painting - great for ( and made for) that kind of painting - quill type brush housed in a bamboo handle...never saw one that looked like a watercolor brush...
Thank you for the information. I have not used any Golden Maple brushes. I have purchased several other brands of brushes that I was not happy with. I have found a few brushes that I like and they are not always the most expensive ones. I have come to the conclusion that it is hard to find a good brush. I am going to order some of the Pentel water brushes that you use to see how they work. (It is all your fault.) Yes everyone buy the best paper you can afford.
@IllustrationsByPete good idea to buy more. I am joking of course I do not blame you. I had seen the water brushes before and after seeing you use them I thought why not try them. I did click on your link and ordered them from the very big business that I do not order art supplies from as much anymore so you can get credit for the sale. Maybe they will not be flattened when they get here.
Thank you! It's a generic brand. In the description I put a link to them. They came 3 in the set for like $8. They work pretty well and they're cheap enough to toss out when they stop working. I've had these for about a year and I've had to throw out one.
Omg, cooties are super cute lol it’s funny how I don’t often see brush reviews here, I didn’t even realized till now! I got myself royal & langnickel’s watercolor zen series and it’s doing just fine for now, not only they are affordable, but also have a great finishing. I once was a vegan so I worry about the material as well, and tho I got myself a petit gris I still haven’t got used to actually using it, I hope I will tho. Oh, my white nights set arrived and it’s a-mazing!! And I have one random question that is killing me: what does it mean when you say fourth generation paints regarding Paul Ruben’s pigments? Thank uuuu
When I say fourth generation or fifth generation it refers to the formula. So the fourth generation is the fourth time they've changed the formula for their paints. Now they just came out with the fifth generation of paints which use different pigments and consistency. The confusing part is if they keep the same name and you forget which one you bought but you run out and want to replace it. Hope that helps. 🙂
My extent to brush knowledge reduces to a set of 15 synthetic pieces that I got for like $10CAD... and they are more than I need. Amazing in my point of view 😅😆. Interesting painting for today - don't know what it is but it is captivating. Were you thinking of cooties when you paint it?
I was perfectly happy with those simply Simmons brushes for years. Those and water brushes and I'm all set. No, I didn't see the cootie thing until I was about 3/4 of the way through the painting part. Then I couldn't not see it. 😂
It is like Cooties. Haha before you said that I was thinking Thanksgiving dinner. Art is so fabulous isn’t it? 😂 Thanks for the review and good research spotting “horsehair”.
i had that game, and, yes, it was something grandma got. i think my kids finally lost all the legs... or broke it? i don't think i would recommend horse hair for watercolor beginners either. maybe sumi ink? (something a bit thicker) but not water color.
Beginners will say that they are great because it’s highly likely that they don’t know what to look for in a good brush lets alone know how different animal hairs behave…
Hi Pete. I have the set of three round golden maple Travel brushes and I absolutely love them. I use them all the time for watercolor.
They have a lot of different sets. What kind of hair are they?

Great review. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Thank you for your honest review of this product for use with watercolor. I was curious about these after seeing the quill brush demo.
I'm glad I could help. I wanted to love these but unfortunately I don't.

That sounds like a good painting. 😂 I need to look into the Rosemary brushes. I've never seen them. 👍🏻

Those sound interesting. I didn't know mijello made those. I'll have to check them out. Thanks! 👍🏻

Thank you Denise! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂 It's a fun game for young kids.
Like your creature,u r always so creative 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! 🙂

😂 people give me strange looks when I say that to them. Especially when it doesn't concern them to begin with. 🤣

Their quills are great. They don't dump water and paint like these do. These don't work for me.

😂 I'll take the blame. I hope you enjoy it. It is hard to find a good brush so if you find one, get a couple so you aren't without it. 👍🏻

Nice review. What kind of brush pen were you using for the black outlines?

I had the cooties game lol cool piece.

Looks just like Cooties. 😂
Thanks! 🙂

I agree but I've heard some very good artists here on RUclips say that too. I don't understand. If anything it would frustrate a new artist.
