Update: The fans work quietly now. However, some research showed that GM fan relays kick in at 220F which corresponds to 2 needles past the middle in the temp gauge in Ventures. So, it is still the same situation but I guess I won't be as worried since they kick in when they are supposed to. Just throwing this out there in case you are having a similar issue.
@@Doc_Here I gotta misfire on cylinder 2 after my fan died and I let it get pretty hot. I watched my OBD2 monitor to ensure it didn't get too hot. Any recommendations for this damn thing? Only means of transportation I got atm
@@leroyjethrogibbs change the fan asap because these engines like to blow head gaskets. Don't give it any excuses to do so. This particular van I have had already blown head gaskets when I purchased it. As for the misfire it could be simply due to a plug or the ignition module may be toast. I have another video showing my misfire issue. See if that helps at all
Small correction: It's not one fan works in low and then second one in high. It's both fans connected in series to work in low (so they run on 6V only) and in parallel for high flow (12V). So if one fan fails it means now low mode at all :-/ and only one fan will kick in in high. In other words you have only "low" mode (half of blowing power) starting from higher temperature. Such a wonderful design.
Also you got lucky with that ratcheting wrench.. this one time my dumbass dropped an alternator on a Camry we were working on in class.. mind you I had the belt and fasteners free, however my dumbass forgot to disconnect power to the battery, lo and behold it fumbles and blew the alternator fuse 🤦🏻♂️
How long did it take you from start to finish top off antifreeze ? Great step by step I see there is Not One ShortCut !! Everything you did was Needed to be Done 👏👍 I'm fed up with van daughter bought it a couple of months ago and has been Nothing but TROUBLE 😵
I had a similar experience with this van. It is trouble after trouble. Part of it is because of bad engineering and part because of years of neglect. I only use it for hauling stuff so I can still live with it but for a daily I would turn around and run away. Changing the fans was not that bad. With some luck I believe it can be finished in about an hour granted you have all the tools etc. ready
Yo, you got the size and deep vs shallow for all the fasteners you took off as well as the drives (3/8", 1/2", etc)? Also, did you support the engine underneath with a jack and wood block since you had to take off the motor mounts?
The remaining motor mounts could support the engine in my case. All of the stuff are 3/8" drives. It has been a long while but I used both deep and shallow varieties depending on the bolts and locations I was dealing with. I don't remember the sizes other than what I may have specified in the video.
You don't have to support the engine/transmission, they have their own mounts. What he removed are "torque struts" keeps the engine from rocking back and forth during acceleration/de-acceleration.
These are cheap enough that it would not be worth the hassle in my opinion. You would need to find the exact same fan with the same connectors make sure nothing breaks etc. I think I paid $80 for the new fan so it was not worth it to fiddle around with the old one for me.

I’m based overseas and I believe the entire assembly is like 18lbs (listed on amazon) - that’s going to cost more than the part itself for shipping - that’s why I was wondering if just replacing one fan & fan motor would be possible. Great video ! It will help a lot once I order the parts and try to fix this myself 👍
This is the same setup as the montana.Wait until you try and change the rear sparkplugs.The engineers that designed these should be fired.There isn't much that is easy to do on these vehicles.I will never get another.

I know this is an older video but another option is to force it into high speed by using the AC option.

Yes they were apparently built as use and trash units. Nothing in the engine bay is easily accessible. So yes it is a POS :D
