Just wanted to answer a few questions we've gotten already on the raised garden beds: The reason we built them tall is because we're tall and didn't want to have to constantly bend over. The bottoms are open to the ground below, not covered with poly...the poly is only on the sides (anywhere that wood will touch soil so they'll last longer). It won't take any more soil than normal because we'll be using the hugelkultur method which is filling up the beds with leaves, sticks, stumps, etc so the soil remains nutrient rich for years to come. We'll be putting some sort of fencing area around them to keep deer out of our veggies. Hope that helps!! 💛

    • @Zeyev
      @Zeyev 4 года назад +8

Thanks for the clarification. I wondered about drainage when I saw the poly because drainage is essential. Good job!

OMGOSH!!! Soon as I saw the height I thought hugelkultur to keep y'all from going bankrupt on soil purchases.😉 I used the technique years ago and planted a dwarf fruit cocktail tree, dwarf 5n1 apple and dwarf 5n1 pear. So in a very small space I'm getting a great variety of tree fruit. With beds that high at least you won't have to worry about Thumper. Great idea for fencing to keep Bambi out too. Another great video fellas. Is it Wednesday or next Sunday yet!😉 I will be checking my notifications to see when and what y'all come up with next. Hugs and high fives to you both. Keep Calm and Carry On.☀️🌈🌻

I’ve never heard of Hugelkultur. But I just googled it and watched a video. I want to try to recreate your beds, if I can find some instructions. Thanks for the information.

I hope you can have a little cup of the moonshine for this 62 year old widower. I sure wish that John and I had the motivation that you boys have. Unfortunately he had some health issues that held us back a little bit but that's OK because just like you boys we made do with what we had. Sending you boys lots of love big huge kisses until next week keep smilin. 😍💞😋

Your Off Grid Tiny House Project is going to be great, because your approach to the project is so well thought out I personally love the LOVE you two share between each other. It's funny, warn, silly, caring, romantic, helpful, and it always seems genuine!.....even tangible. You are to be commended on your music selection too. MY husband and I have a seasonal trailer in an RV park. Many people have a basic trailer garage to preserve the trailer. Six 4x4 mounted in those concrete feet and than the roof. Not $25,000 the most they’ve paid was about $3500 and you could do most of it. If you are still going to RV you could place the RV in one spot and leave another area for a more permanent tiny home. This way you can have your tiny home and take off in your trailer whenever you want and your trailer will always be protected.

Hey guys I thought I would share this tip, then again you might have heard about it by now. For cutting metal sheets as you were doing, install your blade the wrong way on your skill saw. That is right, on the opposite direction where you think it will not cut! It will cut through metal sheet like butter. Use an old blade because it will afterwards no longer cut properly if you were to rotate it to the proper direction. We learned that trick from an older wood worker when we build our Lanai at Plein Bois campground two years ago.
Good luck guys and my partner and I love a you.

Oh my gosh, yes, those metal sheets, when cut, are very sharp. You really should wear heavy duty gloves. I learned the hard way 😖. That’s not an easy or fun job, cutting with those clippers. I was building a catio for our daughter’s cats, and needed to cut roof panels. Used those same clippers. What a pain. Those raised beds look awesome! This is the first video I watched, and I already love you guys, so I subscribed 🥰. I just watched the video when Charlie had emergency surgery, and I’m so glad he’s ok. It made me want to tell you guys, and everyone who has doggies, to be super careful if you have anything with Xylitol in it(a sugar substitute). It’s in so many foods and candy/gum these days, and it’s very deadly for dogs. We learned the hard way (yep, we seem to learn a lot of lessons the hard way 😖) and almost lost our sweet Cooper. We ended up having him in two different emergency hospitals, but after about 10 days, and $10,000 later, we got to bring him home. We were so lucky he survived. We now share this with everyone who has doggies, be a use we don’t want anyone to have to go through what we went through with our Cooperboy.

You are both very wise in that you re-assess your plans constantly. I agree, it would be a shame to invest so much in a temporary structure to house the existing tiny home. It will likely last several years as-is and that will give you more time to come up with what you want for your more permanent structure. I would however invest in ensuring that the home is 'tied down' very securely to make sure it is sturdy during those Nova Scotia storms. Thanks for keeping the content new and interesting every week with a sprinkle of fun.

The planter boxes look great. There is nothing you two cannot accomplish together. I agree fully with your decision to hold off investing a lot of money in what essentially would be a carport for your RV. Not that there is anything wrong with carports, but your are right in asking yourselves if you really need one. You are being realistic and being realistic tends to nip hasty decisions in the bud. Continue to listen to your instincts, which btw are very good, indeed.

    Fellas.
You both nailed this project, Literally and metaphorically. I did the same thing, and this works well. Standing to garden is the best. Iv added a removable hoop system into the equation before filling the boxes with soil. Hoops allow coverage and shelter and keeps bugs out. Alkithain piping creating a hoop, and a larger pipe in each corner of the box to put a pipe within a pipe to create the fixings for each hoop... This system allows for the boxes to be covered with net or polythene to create a greenhouse effect or a covered space. I added hinges to one side of the boxes to allow easy removal of soil as the side then opens ....for adding amendments to soil in the future.
    Well done fellas
    Kindness your way

Hi Guys! Another great video! Those planter boxes look nice enough to live in! You're right to be concerned about the longevity of the RV. I live in a 1995 5th wheel and can attest that they were/are not built to last as long as stick-built structures for full time living. I'll be very interested to see what you decide to do for your tiny house, as I have no doubt that it will be incredible!

Great video guys. Can I make a recommendation about your next RV? Buy something old. It will last much longer. We had a similar aged RV to you and it was built so poorly. When we shopped for a new one, we found that not much had changed. I’ve now got one from 1959 and I’m sure it’ll outlive me! I’ve had to do work to it, but everything is simple and much more robust. Take a look at some of the Airstream and vintage trailer renovation videos out there for some inspiration and think outside the box! 😘

Those raised garden beds are amazing. You could so have a business selling them. And the idea of not having to bend over to the garden beds, happy times for the back. Is Canada starting to open up again. Our Premier has now opened up our state of Queensland (Australia) for travel now but we are still closed to the other states for at least the next month if not more. The other states are not too happy about that but we are having days of no new cases and only a handful of active cases so you have to be happy with that.

Hey guys! We’re enjoying your journey. Thanks for taking us along on the ride!
Do yourselves a favor and buy yourselves....no, INVEST IN these Bug Jackets. I ordered mine on Amazon. You’ll never have to flee the forest due to bugs again! These are soooo worth the minimum cost.
The company that sells them is called Tough Outfitters. They cost $24.95. That’s for the hooded top. You can buy a whole suit if you feel the need.
Sorry, I don’t see a product number, but you can find it easy enough by searching Amazon.
You’ll be able to re-claim entire days outside that once would have been ruined by gnats, mosquitoes and pesky biting flies. 😉 I’m not a sales person and I don’t work for the company. I just thought you’d get some good use from them.
