Louis Armstrong arrived in Chicago 100 years ago this year. This Women’s History Month the Jazz Institute of Chicago honors one of the great influences in his life, his wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, an accomplished pianist who helped guide and define Louis’s career from sideman of King Oliver's band to international superstar and America's first cultural ambassador.
The Jazz Institute of Chicago is celebrating the centennial of Louis Armstrong’s arrival to Chicago with a series of performances, discussions, and showings throughout 2022. No conversation about Louis would be complete without discussing his wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, an accomplished pianist and composer who helped shape the life and music of her husband’s internationally celebrated career. We take this opportunity to observe Women’s History Month by showcasing two of Chicago’s most important female jazz artists, each with a direct musical lineage from the incredible Lil Hardin Armstrong.
