@@iDGF999 I'm surprised more people don't make that connection, but it's possible that it's because they haven't seen it... maybe now with Netflix's Ripley they'll do. I began watching the film with the thought "this is a reinterpretation of Ripley but he's actually the guy Ripley was pretending to be, and not an artifice" but as the film progressed it became more and more clear that not only he is like Ripley but the film goes beyond that (at least what is shown in The Talented, from what I remember; I haven't read the novel and I haven't seen it's previous adaptation to the screen, Plein Solein (Purple Noon), nor have I watched Netflix's Ripley, so I don't know it there is something more. but I think Ripley operates in a different way; he also manipulates but he steals identities - here the manipulation has another purpose and outcome, even though the "light" that attracts both "moths", to use Venetia's metaphor, is basically the same).

    SPOILERS SPOILERS
I think that all the people who are saying they couldn’t find Felix’s motivation, or that it was changing, don’t remember Venetia’s judgement of him. He’s a moth. His greed for “shiny” things ends up consuming whatever he desires. So at first, he desired Felix, and wanted to be close to him and his aura. Then he goes to saltburn and desires the aura of saltburn. Once he knows that he can’t have Felix in the way he wants anymore, he gets rid of him. And once his status at saltburn becomes threatened, he starts to pick off the people who could ruin it for him. His avarice is what drives him to manipulate his way into whatever he desires.

I just saw Emerald Fennell's latest movie, "Saltburn," and wow, it's an absolute knockout! A modern Great Gatsby! This film's visual richness & script brilliantly satirizes Oxford/British wealth and extravagance while uncovering the depths of its characters in a way that's just captivating. It's like watching a train wreck you can't turn away from, with each scene revealing more about what's really going on.
The acting is across the board truly top-notch - absolutely one of the best ensemble performances I've seen this year.
Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, and Alison Oliver shines bright. Carey Mulligan's cameo? Simply unforgettable. And Barry Keoghan? He's outdone himself, delivering a performance that's bound to get Oscar buzz.
What really struck me was how the film takes themes that might seem repulsive on the surface and turns them into a mesmerizing display of artistry. The aesthetics, acting, and writing all come together perfectly, making even the most grotesque scenes somehow relatable. That bathtub scene? It had me feeling a mix of emotions I still can't quite explain.
The tone of the movie is dark but compelling, with every cast member bringing their A-game. And the score? Absolutely majestic. Fennell has outdone herself with this one. After this and "Promising Young Woman," I'm convinced I'll watch anything she directs.
I'm also betting on Oscar nominations for Production Design and Costume Design. And a special shoutout for including "Murder on the Dancefloor" in the soundtrack - that song was my jam in elementary school!
The movie is a rollercoaster of emotions - it's funny, dark, twisted, and utterly captivating. I found myself laughing, gasping, and even shrieking alongside everyone else in the theater. Fennell's unique and inventive approach really shines, making "Saltburn" a film that begs for multiple viewings. As a movie lover, I left the cinema completely amazed and satisfied. For anyone who loves cinema, this is a must-watch. Emerald Fennell has really cooked up something special with "Saltburn."

I think something that's skipped over in your analysis of the movie is that the psychosexual desire does link back into the themes of class. Within the UK middle class there is this palpable desire, almost sexual in nature, to be upper class. In fact when it was revealed that he was not working class as present but in fact was middle class things click thematically as an excellent reveal that as someone from the UK made a lot of sense (think of the valorisation of the royals for external reference).

Being in the UK this resonates with me. The class system is definitely very much alive, and well. The attraction of bringing an outsider into the family circle for amusement/shock value (to be disposed of when no longer fun - like Pamela). The obsession of accessing to the rarified atmosphere of the upper class. Its all there in this movie.

Hi Dan I totally agree about your Review of Saltburn. It was all too much at the same time. I have watched a few Reviews of this movie and I believe yours is spot on. It is a totally fascinating movie but I believe it is not as good as Promising Young Woman which was a very focused movie. Saltburn certainly needs unpacking. Saltburn does seem to have too many stories at the same time so it is hard to focus on the main or real story which takes away your enjoyment of the movie. Everyone is so superficial. I definitely think this movie is rushed and definitely needs a second viewing. This movie has a really creepy feel with some very off cringy scenes. It is very stylish just like Promising Young Woman. Great Review thank you.

In an era of b-movies, blockbusters and franchise sagas Saltburn is that masterpiece we didn’t know we needed. The plot and development reminded me of Parasite. E. Fennell utilised Keoghan’s unique acting features like Lanthimos did. The film displays the harshness and utter violence the average multiplex goer wouldn’t expect - and yet it made it to the wide distribution.

Felix is meant to be 18ish, to be fair. And SPOILERS--
Elspeth outlives her husband while still not looking "old", which suggests to me that she married an older man and had Felix rather young. They're not meant to be of a similar age at all.

Lived in Nelson my entire life. Yay for State Cinema! I remember sitting in front of there from 5am on the day tickets for LOTR Return of the King went on sale. And the excitement among those of us waiting when the film reels were delivered was thrilling.

Very intriguing, Phil, lots and lots of clever stuff here and I love your Breakdown. Don’t think you’ve missed anything being sensitive so I found some of the scenes a bit difficult to watch but the way the characters were formed and fitted in to the bigger picture was masterful

I liked this film, I would say that the problem is as you said, they were trying too many things. There are disturbing scenes that feel like indie horror, but the rest of the film sometimes feels like teen drama, dark comedy, light comedy, mystery etc, which creates these tonal issues.

I Iove seeing movies at the cinema, so much that the last few years I've been seeing 52 movies at the cinema a year. As a little tradition for myself. I travelled to another city, and said to a friend I wanted to see a movie at some of the cinemas while I was there. They said I could see a movie anywhere. I mentioned you can do most things anywhere and going to the cinema, seeing the different locations, architecture and designs is as much as of a joy, as seeing the movie. So it's so cool to me that you are enjoying the cinema still while you're abroad ❤

Did Emerald Fennell mean to make a reverse version of Oliver Twist? Or was her aim to create a black Shakespearean comedy for the 21st century?

Had to stop watching because, while you weren't outright spoiling anything, I thought you were giving too much away. The trailers reveal so little about the movie and maybe that's a good thing.

I hated the way the upper class were portrayed in a slightly sympathetic light. I think the class commentary was weak as the rich were portrayed in a very simplified way. They seemed oblivious to their power and ability to wield it at those that they Perceive to be below them. This made it unrealistic, you can’t be that powerful with such weak defences. It made the story basic, in the sense it was a wolf in sheep’s clothing hunting sheep.

Spoilers ahead. Promising Young Woman was much better than Saltburn. While both controversial, at least Carey Mulligans' character did her revenge tour without hurting anyone or killing anyone. Also, the guy who killed her did not get away with it at the end. In Saltburn, Barry Keoghans' character was just a mentally ill (in a violent, manipulative, destructive way) and he got away with killing at least three family members. I am hoping Fennells' third movie is closer to Promising Young Woman than Saltburn.

A couple of the scenes in final act ruined it for me. Specifically, where they went back in time to give "more insights" into the specific actions he took, most of which were already assumed. Little too much hand holding for the audience when it wasn't needed.
