- Try It Out is a three generation family owned and operated Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand. After arriving in Auckland as refugees from Vietnam in the 1980s, this family opened up Try It Out, a Southern Vietnamese restaurant in Otahuhu. To this day, this tight-knit family works together to serve some of the best Vietnamese dishes in Auckland, such as Bánh mì, spring rolls, summer rolls, and a 12-hour beef pho.

I live in Auckland and this place is disgustingly underrated. I'm so glad that these guys are getting more exposure and recognition for their amazing food.
Lol yes it's great re exposure but now I'm gonna have to drag my friends even earlier to get there even earlier on Saturday mornings. The queue to this place is no joke :(
@Honest Opinion so youre gonna generalise all chinese restaurants based on one?
Nah the locals know what's good
"I'm very grateful for my mum, Even though i don't say it often"
That hit the feels pretty deep. Big shoutout to loving mums worldwide
Keep celebrating Asian culture, Vice. You have more than enough content to fill a decade.
YESSS!
Food is culture??
@@kibadeluxe5236 basically everything is culture dude
@@hungggggggggg5746 even Mayonnaise?
@@kibadeluxe5236 yeah, everything dude, walk, talk,..... that what they said in a book 🤷🏼
As a New Zealander I'm so proud. When I'm back next I'm coming to visit. 🤗
Please enjoy for me🤤
@@ladylight007 I gotcha 👌🏾💯
Me too, can't wait now.
I'm doing the same next time I go home
In Slovakia, Vietnamese cuisine is the favourite nr.1. It has won even over slovakian cuisine😄😄
For real? LOL
Yo are there a lot of vietnamese over there
Yayyy
Slovakian cuisine is lame. Cabbage, sausage and bread.
@@Baghuul with all the respect to you my friend, you’re mistaking that with germany or czech cuisine. Slovakian financially poor culture between 1700 and 1945 was standing on the normal white flour (at the early beginnings). Then, the miracle happened, and someone has brought in potatoes 😄. Every family must have had a field with crops sown in it. Otherwise they wouldn’t had any food. Also a big prevalence of malnutrition was quite usual. Some of rich families had also sheeps, cows, chickens and pigs. There you have it. Dough for slovakian dumplings: flour, boiled potato, salt, egg. It’s filled up with a special mixture consisting of sheep cheese bryndza (very salty) and boiled potato. Topped with fried pig bacon or onions.
I must agree it’s not very attractive food like sushi or pho 😃 but there’s no ,,bad” culture, only different.
This is genuine, heartfelt content I look forward to seeing from this Chanel.
Never thought my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland would get a feature on Munchies!! So well deserved!!!
Same
Less than 2 generations to get that Kiwi accent thick.
The mix of Vietnamese and kiwi accent is beautiful, too
Chur from plamy👋gotta eat there one day
*thuhck
Lol
In the USA, blacks got their own accent and speech patterns. They don’t speak like the rest of Americans. So there’s American culture for everyone else. And there’s black culture.
I hope Munchies makes more auckland content. the asian food scene there is no joke. Hundreds of uighur, vietnamese, japanese, shaanxi, etc restaurants all with fascinating stories like this.
Yes!!! 🙌🏾
Yeah I love the foodie scene in Auckland rn, our city has come a long way!
I was last there in 2010 and I didnt experience a whole lot, is it a recent development?
@@JeromeBakerSmoke depends where you go. Auckland's food scene is really good.
@@JeromeBakerSmoke In 2010 a lot of things were relatively underground, those who knew the good spots knew it but it wasn't shared knowledge like this place and many others similar to it. Also different cuisines are in different parts of Auckland that you would have to explore outside of the city, and although the food game in the city is pretty good now, in 2010 it definitely wasn't. But thanks to publications like concrete playground and others these secrets are more widely known now. Also in 2010 it was not as varied, the food scene grew exponentially I'd say around 2014, suddenly almost overnight it felt like there was just so many options, more secret little hideout eateries, speakeasys, really good brunch spots, upscale restaurants, weekend and night market's and pop up's.
Proud Aucklander here, so glad to see these guys getting featured (and Otara flea market haha). The OGs will know all the good Viet food is in Otahuhu and South Auckland!
Hard out and best spring rolls from Sam Woo's!
Indeed! Otahuhu is the place where I tasted Vietnamese food for the first time and loved it. Try it out is right up there!
I’m Mexican but I absolutely love Vietnamese food, it’s the only thing I could eat while pregnant and my child also loves Pho, and lemongrass beef 🥩
My Chinese friend said she was craving for Pho when she was pregnant.
You should branch out and try the bun cha or bun thit nuong, com tam, banh xeo, bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew...get the one that gives you bread to dip in the broth vs eating it over noodles), ca ri ga (chicken curry, again get the one with baguette to dip in the broth), banh cuon, etc.
this was awesome munchies!
As a Vietnamese living in Auckland, I have to admit that their Pho and banh mi are better than other places. Didn't know about their history though.
I just cried watching this. It really reminds me of my family and im glad i clicked on this video. Wishing nothing but blessings for this family
Vietnamese people have selfless hearts i lived in a super poor household in new zealand and the vietnamese lady that owned the bakery used to see me starving and wave me down off the street to give me left overs will always be thankful.
Woow bless you!
Omg she said 10 to 12 hours just for the broth, this clearly explains my addiction to pho.
Been going to this spot for years
I suggest you TRY IT OUT!
What a beautiful family - I just wanna give them all a hug! I hope their resturant contines to be successful. If I ever get over to NZ, I'll be searching this place out!
I just love how passionate and excited they get talking about their history, family and recipes that have been with them for a long time. Such genuine and wonderful people!
I was here for the food... But I am cutting onions!! 😭😭 What a beautiful & inspiring story. Blessings to this lovely family. 🙏🌻
I loved this episode! I am Hmong and I grew up eating Vietnamese food here in MN USA. Seeing the immigrant story in a different part of the world from the same situation my people fled South East Asia really goes to show that we are doing well after the Vietnam War.
You can come back to Vietnam. Hmong is part of Vietnamese and Vietnam always greets you.
Hello fellow Minnesotan :) I’m a Vietnamese living in MN too
Can confirm. This place is awesome.
As a Kiwi married to a Vietnamese this makes me very happy. We will have to visit when we can travel back to NZ. Cô ơi, phở trông ngon quá!!
Love this!! My parents are refugees from Cambodia and I can feel their emotions when they speak. Especially their mom/grandma....I always hear that same tone from my folks🖤💯
It was the same hearing the story about my Niuean Grandmother, who came to NZ before the rest of the family in the early 70s.
What an awesome and inspiring testimony! And I just love Pho for many many years here in Austin, Texas (Me Con & Pho Thaison are my favorite spots to get pho). May God continue to bless, keep and prosper your family. Be blessed. 🙏🏿❤🙏🏿
you should try Pho Hoang in Round Rock and Pho King on Parmer
Was looking for a new place to take my wife out tonight in Auckland. Think I found it thanks Munchies 😀
this was recommended to me immediately after the upload.. blessed by pho 😇
I've eaten here, the food is amazing! support family businesses ❤️
I live in Auckland and we travel quite a long way to have breakfast here most Saturday's, amazing food for a reasonable prices.
Love to hear the stories of families that have overcome hardship through dedication, love and support of family. Makes me happier that it based on Pho. I call it the elixir of life. I eat sometimes three times a week (I'm a white guy) I say I am going for my Vietnamese facial the steam, fragrance and flavor soothes my soul.
this is very wholesome
I used to go eating at the restaurant a long time ago. Good to see them. I am sorry to hear the Dad died. He was the most kind and lovely man. I am going to visit there soon...
How beautiful... suddenly I’m craving pho
I eat here regularly, awesome to see this lovely humble family restaurant recognised.
The food is amazing.
I live 40 mins away and make the trip often. That's how good the good is
This episode hits a bit closer to home knowing this is in our backyard! Thanks Munchies for shedding light on this hardworking family 🙏🏾❤️
As a Vietnamese woman I’m so proud of the sisters.
if I lived in NZ, I would be going there for Pho Bò every single day.
That is my most treasured dish, always reminds me of my dad.
Love this Ryan and Dylan
so many towns have a few pho resturants run by a viet family with similar stories. My town has a few families like this... the sacrafices the elders took to leave vietnam with nothing after the war and tried to make a good life for their kids is so touching, it brings tears to my eyes.
Im thankful for all the vietnamese-canadian families in my community. Theyre wonderful people that enrich the lives of everyone around them
this made me cry, what a lovely family. great job, munchies!
Beautiful video, had me crying at the very end. I’m so happy their children are continuing the family business and making their ancestors proud.
I’m a regular here, and trust me it’s worth the hype. So stoked to see this establishment on RUclips.
One of my favorite restaurants in otahuhu!
I drive past this place every now and then, but now after seeing this, will definitely have to go with a few friends to try it out. I suppose we’re lucky that covid is not as big of an issue here so we can keep supporting local businesses. Keep the Auckland foodie stories coming ❤️🇳🇿 kia ora
So happy for this families success through all of their sacrifice and amazing hard work.
What A Blessed Family!!! I could feel their hearts in this video..Very blessed strong grounded family..I love Vietnamese food but I know this family is one of a kind...can’t wait for the borders to open so I can come see family in New Zealand and most def will come to this restaurant and will Try It Out 💯🙏🏾. Stay Blessed Family
What a beautiful family 💖 Thank You Munchies for bringing their story out to the world 🙏🏽
Vietnamese with new Zealand accents. That's some cray cray yoo
The accent is not much of a surprise to me. It’s just like a Vietnamese with an Aussie accent..over here in Australia
Why? New Zealand is a melting pot, especially Auckland, so many different ethnicities.
Love this video as an American viewer for the following reasons:
1) Immigrants escaping from Communist Regime
2) Immigrants trying hard in their host country
3) Family business
4) The second generation is grateful for the first generation's effort.
5) Toyota Hi-Ace
Vice, hope you can make more stories like these.
What a wonderful story! Hard work and lots of love! They are an inspiration!
Food is the glue that binds generations and speaks for the ancestors that are no longer with us. Thank you for this touching portrait. Hope to make it to NZ one day and visit this lovely family and their restaurant.
A great video about an even greater family. The struggles that parents and grandparents, especially those who migrate, go through for the better future of their families always amazes me. It is so incredible selfless and at the same time so rewarding, if it works out of course.
And it is so good to see that the younger generation understands and values that.
beautiful to see this family share their story. It's refreshing to see the young sons with so much respect and admiration for their mother and grandparents especially after what they sacrificed for them. I live in Auckland so I'll definitely stop in to try their pho and bahn mi
I love Munchies because we get to experience different cultures and hear their stories that inspired them. Also we get to learn the unique ways of foods and the different ways people cook them.Hearing these stories of the struggle and how it inspired them to start a new life d restaurant from scratch makes you want to support them more than the restaurants of people who was privileged or had money to start their business without knowing the real deep struggle. This made me cry I’m glad they didn’t leave their parents and go work for other people but instead invested in the family business
nothing brings me more joy than hearing my native language and seeing my native culture be shared and celebrated ❤️. I spent so much of my life never understanding the people around me and it makes me cry of joy whenever I hear people speak in the mother tongue that I resented growing up
I love the work ethic of this family it’s hard a thing to find nowadays
That was so, so sweet.
The best stories are born from the hardships of those who have gone before , I see the importance of hardwork hasnt been lost on their grandkids - they understand
This is amazing! If i ever visit New Zealand, i must make it a priority to stop by!
That will be just the start of your degustation buddy, over 160 different cultures living in Auckland,so many choices to look at,you won't be disappointed,I guarantee it.
Another highly recommend place is Canton Cafe,in an area called Kingsland, best Taiwanese food outside of Taiwan.
Hope everyone is doing good 🙏
Hahaha so funny seeing try it out on munchies, this is our regular go to vietnamese spot here in Auckland 😁👌
I love try it out, my family and I have been regulars for over 8 years not only because their food is good but also because the staff are genuinely lovely people, bless your beautiful family❤❤❤🙏
What a nice family
Beautiful whanau! Can't wait to try this when I'm next back home!
Omg I can't wait until I go back to Auckland to try this place. This is why it's important to support local businesses because of stories like these ❤️
Wonderful story. This family has heart they have a why that pushes them everyday. Blessings from Texas.
Keep these stories coming, Vice. Let's celebrate these stories of immigration and food! Loved watching this.
What a wholesome story and dayum that food looked so good!
i am fluent in viet and listening to their mom speak viet was so comforting for some reason
also this food looks amazing!! thanks for posting content of asian culture, Vice!

Thank you to my peoples of Vietnam, without you, I would not have a favorite food. Pho literally gives me life. love y'all
Beautiful story!!
when the mom spoke about leaving the country for her kids to have a better life, dam that hit close to home
This was so beautiful, thank you for sharing
Beautiful family. They take so much pride in their food and it shows! Love the fact they’re only a 5 minute drive and I’m about to order a Banh Mi 😅 obsessed with the chicken soft noodle soup and dipping the banh mi inside… chefs kiss 🤌🏽
Lovely Family, absolutely Hank Marvin after watching this.
The best story yet Munchies!

Such a beautiful story
Wow, me and my sister came here all the time. But hearing the stories behind the food makes it so much better. Big props to your family & muchies for this one and for putting South Auckland food on the map. Will come back and eat this week
That lady loves her mom so much. She's literally attached to her and just holds her throughout the entire video. Like , yeah this my mummmmm.
Wow this episode is awesome! I’ve been to this place so many times and it’s so goodddd... Aucklanders get on this!!
Would have liked to see more cooking.
Finally tried this spot today... such good food!! The rare beef pho & Banh Mi was sooo good! Will def go back to try more! Great service also!
