Hard to believe that this film is 60 years old. It doesn’t feel like it.
Very interesting. Mom decided on a VERY basic persimmon and white six passenger six cylinder 1959 Suburban for our family car. The total accessory list was automatic transmission, two-tone paint, white wall tires, and power steering.
We had a new car, and it saved gas.
No radio, no clock, no heater! I remember seeing my breath while going to school.
When I was a little kid my mom and dad had bought a new 1959 Plymouth. This is just how I remember that car. We drove it from California to Missouri with only one night in a motel in New Mexico (hurrying to family funeral). Funny the things we remember...
my dad had one i still remember it///
I sure do enjoy all these old training films from Chrysler GM and Ford their great DeSoto packer all of the great cars
The voice of the martian is an actor named Arnold Stang. He was a nerd way ahead of his time. There are plenty of Arnold Stangs around today..they're called geeks today.
A contemporary Arnold Stang would have been a recurring cast member in The Big Bang Theory.
He was great in It’s A Mad,Mad,Mad World!
I had no idea these were so well equipped.
I have wondered for years how the mirror on the dashboard could possibly have worked, particularly with adults in the back seat.
a light detector on the back of the car maybe on the rear wind shield
My first car purchased new in 1959 from Mashak Motors in Van Nuys (Los Angeles). It was a thrill until the trunk started leaking. Dealer installed heater (optional on the Belvedere) and the core leaked all over my optional carpet. It was a convertible and the top had to be replaced after ONE YEAR fabric having worn out at seams. Good looking car but a POS! Low seats caused back issues. I stopped buying American following leaking issues on trunk again with ‘73 Dodge Dart. Of course I could have purchased a Ford with exploding gas tank.
This may be the single most 1950s video demonstration ever
And I used to watch them when I was a child, my dad was a car salesman!😷😏
Martin's voice reminds me a Jet from West Side Story
Sounds like martin is from New York
Lol

Well, that explains a lot.
My parents bought a gray 59' Belvedere. Then painted it black.
The cars commercials should look like this
Love this! There's a reason why the man from Mars is promoting Plymouth here: You see, the man from Mars who goes out at night eating cars prefers to eat Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercurys and Subarus.
Good song by Blondie.
I do miss the fins.
That's Arnold Stang doing the voice of the martian, isn't it?
Man, you're good. I thought the same.
I was thinking that as well, remembering him in 'Mad, Mad World' as one of the gas station owners.
Yes it is!
I knew these were very ahead of their time, but this is something else.
Was this the same for the 57 and 58? Cause those years are the ones I’m looking to buy in the future.
I think so, Isaac. We had a run with new Plymouths when I was a kid. 1957 Belvedere two-door hardtop, a 1958 same, and my little brother necessitated the 1959 basic Suburban.
I was very aware of the options available, but my parents did not need.
The film did not feature optional interior fabrics, swivel seats, power seats, trim levels, and I believe power door locks. Radios were AM, but rear speaker was another option. Power antenna was not.
Final year for the flathead six cylinder. They did not mention the economy engine.
of course they didn't. who wanted an economy engine in 1959??
The folks who bought AMC Ramblers and a newly-created Studebaker Lark sure did. Between the two of them, they accounted for more than 1/2 a million units. That's not even counting import sales, of which Volkswagen and Renault were quickly gaining traction.
Well.. maybe your lower classes wanted those cheap things.. but middle America sure didn't want that junk.. not back then anyways
Actually, a significant percentage of these types of buyers wanted more luxurious cars in a smaller package, which explains why AMC sold around 50,000 Ambassadors for the year and why around 40% of all Lark sales were the better equipped Lark VIII package. By the way, both of those cars cost around the same as an Oldsmobile fully loaded. The imports were more for the blue-collar worker in terms of price, undercutting the Chevrolet Biscayne by $200-$400 on average.
Well.. ok.. maybe in the neighborhoods you hung out in , but, where I lived, NO ONE drove a Studebaker and certainly not an AMC of any kind, unless you were a maid or a janitor at the high school... the lowest priced car I ever saw was a Pontiac, and that's only because there was a Pontiac dealer on the way to the Cadillac dealership downtown, and if they didn't get a Cadillac, they wanted the next best thing, a Buick. Most people I knew wanted big luxury cars, big engines and flash.. and that's what they got.
Is this a 1959 Plymouth Fury 4 door hardtop as shown on this video?
whatever happened to Mirror-Matic ? I've never heard of this before! :O
Anyone recall, or now has, the Highway Hi-Fi that was the under dash phonograph?
Vi rendete conto che queste automobili avevano accessori come l'aria condizionata, i vetri elettrici, lo specchietto antiabbagliante e il dispositivo automatico per gli abbaglianti che in Europa, sarebbero arrivati nel 2000?
Every time I see that martian figure, my brain goes into an infinite loop, cycling thru every possible cartoon character in existence, trying to figure out what character that martian resembles the most...
PS: After searching for Arnold Stang, his voice actor, I wonder no more.
My god cars 60years ago had more standard features than the plastic junk we have now
Somebody didn't watch the video at all. Like where they explained that power mirrors, sun visors, power steering, backup lights, windshield washers, variable-speed wipers, power windows, air conditioning, solar glass, a clock, and the lock on the glovebox were all options. Or are you just so poor your car doesn't have any of these?
Full-time power steering?!! Now we're talking.
How did instant heat work?
The Martian has a Brooklyn accent.
That guy was in Stalag 17.
No it's Arnold Stang. I believe you are thinking of Harvey Lembeck who had a similar sounding voice and was in Stalag 17. His best friend and cohort was played by Robert Strauss.
Was able to buy a survivor 59 Fury 99 percent original that was being junked the next morning for $25. The reaires neededwas ne uper hose and water pump. The car had that very dangerous torsionmbar suspension. The car really bouncedbonmdips and turns
its pretty annoying catching myself singing "if its new the plymouth got it" at work
Thats a “thickerer chunk of chocolate “
Air con in 1959? I didn't even have that on my first car made in 2001 lol.
Aircon was avaliable from factory in big GM and Chrysler cars since 1953
And standard sized Ford's and Mercury's since 56. Lincolns had air conditioning available maybe for the first time in 55.
US-market cars all got AC standard in the 90's. Amusingly, Canada still has optional AC on their cheapest models. For example, the base model 2022 Toyota Corolla doesn't have it.
The Martian came all the way from an island on Mars....
Manhatten
0:21 yeah cause that's a typical question when coming to earth for the first time. Or he might be a gear head
That alien sounds like he's from the Mafia!
what age are the buyers back then ? 5?
ASS/////
Moron!!! Obviously another millenial!!!
