@@TheSalsaBeat Omg, for 15 years I've been using my old sneakers-with-leather that had the whole bottoms done, and it had genuinely never occurred to me to just... not do the entire sole! You commented elsewhere this has to be replaced every year; is that because the leather wears through or the adhesive gives out or what? I did mine with plain leather and contact cement, and while the shoes themselves are falling apart with age, the suede is still perfect as ever.
Jared! Thanks for the message. Nice to see that others are making their dance shoes too. It does save a lot of money. As far as your question, it’s never the adhesive. The adhesive leader sole sheets that I buy use a strong adhesive. Generally, it’s me wearing out the shoe from social dancing and teaching on them. They could usually last me 2yrs nowadays, vs a year. But it comes down to how often are you wearing them.
what do you suggest for dancing on grass? There are lots of concerts in the parks and wineries where I live and grass is the only option. What can I do to make my shoes slick and able to turn on grass? Suede would get messed up pretty fast.

Will do. Before I found these adhesive leather sheets, what I use to do was buy double sided tape and the suede leather sheets separately and stick them together myself. I was an extra step but still worked. Look for double sided tape that uses industrial strength.
So my one worry here is this: I add the soles, drive to the club wearing flipflops or somthing . Park and now I have to put the shoes on to walk to the club a couple blocks away. Will the soles be ruined by the time I get to the club?
Great question Gumptin. I tend to do the same and it still has work. The soles will last longer if you avoid wearing them outside where there’s gum or gunk on the floor. Now, if it’s raining… never walk on them. I Sometimes carry them in a bag and change shoes at the club. They won't last at all =(. For concrete I recommend this dance shoe called "Fuego". They advertise that their shoe is made for various surfaces. I can't speak about their comfort though since I don't own a pair.
About once a year, if so. It varies on how often you use them and how you take care of them. Meaning… if you walk on the street with them… the soles will get worn out and ugly sooner.

That's a very good question Rita! I really think it'll work but I've never tried it. However the adhesive is pretty strong so it should stick. Let us know if you try it out!

Lol I found your video because I had the same idea and put sticky furniture felt on a new pair of shoes , it looks like it's stuck very well but Im scared to wear them , thought they'd be too slippery or come off while dancing. I'm not so sure now.

I wanted to buy some Latin dance shoes for both the style and ability to keep up with my hypermobile ankles, but I want to use them for both indoor and outdoor use. Hello and Sorry for the delay! I have never tried your idea so it’ll be hard to suggest a sole. Generally when I convert a shoe’s sole into a dancing suede sole, I’m no longer able to walk outside on that shoe. As For Latin heels, my wife has enjoyed the brand “Burju” in the past. They’ve been in the industry for some time now and use a variety of styles.
What is the 3M product you are using? I can not really read the name and what I find on the internet is a double sided adhesive which doesn't sound right. Thanks for the hack, but I am not sure what to purchase!

I have some shoes that seem ideal in many ways for conversion, basically really durable converse chucks. However the rubber is really soft/grippy. Would that be a bad idea for house dancing? I guess I'll pay much closer attention to *how* dancers use their shoes/soles.

Thanks, ive been wearing a hand-me-down pair of Split Sole Bloch Dance Sneakers, but theyre expensive to replace and not super comfy (for me), maybe due to being old and maybe a size too small?. I line dance in dance halls with wooden floorboards mostly, and i dont want to leave scuff marks on the floor and upset the teacher. What (cheap/ department store) sneaker soles are flat enough to stick this adhesive leather (or cheaper 'BlochSpot Spin Spots') onto, but most importantly; which sole types wont scuff mark the floor boards? (I realise the pivot point is taken care of), but the heel of the sole could still mark the floor, doing 'heel grinds' etc.

@@TheSalsaBeat white rubber, ok thanks. The ones i was looking at, 1 had black (plastic-ey rubber-ey) sole, the other had that gum color sole. I bought the blaxk ones, as in the huge department it gripped less to the polished hard lino floors, than all the others. But when i tried em on wood floorboards, although they pivot "ok", tgere was still a little resistance, and this caused my knees to ache a little after 2hrs. So will try sticking leatger or spin spots to that black sole. But its not totally smooth ...the smoother texture gripped more in the shop, so i avoided them.
Just keep in mind that I stopped putting leather soles on the heel part because I then found the shoes to be too slippery. Which is why I only place the leather soles on the front part of the shoe only.

Sorry to hear 🙁. I have conditions on both my feet that I’ve been dealing for over 20yrs and had difficulty finding shoes for that particular reason. Which is why I had to retire from dance shoes and therefore began grabbing shoes from my closet and started converting ‘em into dance shoes. Don’t give up… 😉 keep on looking. As soon as you find a pair you like and that fit you well… convert ‘em!
Or you can take the insole out from your shoes and take the measurements. It’s going to give you exactly measurement that you need. 👍🏽

The uncovered heel serves me as a brake. When I covered the whole shoe I found it really hard to control my spins.

It does work on tile floors. Just remember not to step on water or it’ll get grippy, just like a dance shoe with suede soles do.

I find that white rubber soles leave less scuff marks.
