Holy shit, the audio book is narrated by David Tennant. As a whovian and a wonkerer, I NEED Tennant Wonka in my life.
Tbh David Kelly's Grandpa Joe in the 2005 film is not bad. First of all, it's not stated in the movie how long he's been bedridden for. It's also logical that he wouldn't work for the family, possibly being too old to be hired anywhere. This alongside with the context that he was let go from Wonka's factory and not able to find another job. Therefore, to me, it's pretty reasonable to see this guy suddenly get out of bed at the opportunity to re-live the greatest days of his working career, admitting that he would give anything in the world to have one more look at Wonka's factory.
Compare this to Jack Albertson’s 1971 Grandpa Joe, who was explicitly stated to have not set foot on the floor in 20 years. This makes it agreeably disgusting for him to slither out of bed and start dancing around at the mention of free chocolate. Again, he lacks the motivation of having worked for Wonka.
