It was released all the way back in the good old 2014, so by now, they have built quite a reputation. And we'll put that reputation to the test today. But if you want a quick overview - I would personally call uBlock Origin more of a content filter since it allows you to do much more than block ads…
Okay, I've told you that uBlock Origin is open-source, but why should anyone care? Open-source basically means that anybody can take the source code of an app, use it, study, change, and distribute it. It's a very user's centric approach to copyright in general, but it's even better for bugs or security. Imagine that instead of 10 employees trying to fix a bug or improve security, you get a few thousand users working on it… and users do seem to love uBlock Origin…
Best Ad Blocker - uBlock Origin - Features
How to block ads on Chrome? Simple, just activate uBlock Origin, and… that's it if you only need protection from ads…
However, I also want to go over the main features this tool offers briefly. The first features are popup and large media element blocking. I can toggle them on or off for every website manually in the extension. Or make the changes permanent with the lock symbol or through the settings. In the settings, I can also define what a "large media" is in kilobytes or megabytes.
The Javascript and Remote Font blockers are great tools for when I want to speed up my browsing experience. A lot of websites come with a ton of fancy scripts that I don't really need, especially when I'm just looking for an article to read. So popping these settings on helps me reduce bloated loading times.
Up next, Element Zapper is one of the most interesting features of uBlock Origin. It allows me to temporarily hide any element on a webpage without creating filters or anything else. So if I go to some website that has a weird ad or element, I can just do this, and viola. It's great for sites I just visit once for some technical info…
Element picker is another interesting feature for when I want to create more permanent filters. It allows me to see the exact hierarchy of a block or element and choose at what level I want to hide it. I can create quite complex cosmetic filter networks without coding anything, just using these sliders and then clicking this button to create the filter. So even beginners can work with filters here…

Best Ad Blocker - uBlock Origin - Testing
Okay, the last thing in my Ublock origin review 2024 edition is real-life testing. To do this, I'm using a Chrome browser on a Windows computer and accessing Weather.com and Speedtest.net. First, let's see how these two websites look without uBlock Origin enabled, and then let's turn it on, and… wonderful, all ads and other annoying content are gone. And I like that this extension does tax my browsing speed or leave empty spaces where ads used to be…

Ultimately uBlock is a great ad and content blocker. It's easy to use for beginners but has more advanced settings for experienced users. And the fact that it's free and open source is a nice cherry on top. I recommend uBlock Origin.

It blocks pop up ads but the pop ups show in my searches. Is that normal if not is there a way to get rid of it?

This is definitely not normal. You can use the element picker mode though to get rid of this problem.

Brave is using ublock origin
RUclips change the video player to hose up when ublock origin is active. You'll see what I mean when you try it. I have to deactivate ublock when I watch videos on youtube.

Ive 2 old laptops that I use. They both work fine. I installed ublock origin on the one I mainly use coz i heard it was gr8 blockin youtube ads. It was. Not long after I installed it the laptop started randomly shutting down. Typing seemed to instigate the shut down. But it would shut down either way. It looked like the battery was corrupted/finished so I presumed thats what it was as its an old laptop. It became unusable. So I switched to my other laptop.. I then installed ublock on that as well. Within the hour I started getting the same problems on that laptop. Thats when I thought maybe it was ublock causing the problems so I uninstalled it off both. The first laptop immediately started working again and stopped shutting down. Unfortunately it looks like the second laptop didnt fully recover. Id stay away from ublock. It 100% messed both of those computers up and ruined one. Shutting them down etc. Bizarre.
