I wonder if you could do a video on Norton's browser.
Thanks for the filter lists. I'm surprised I didn't think about filter lists to remove RUclips shorts. Damn I hate shorts and short form content. It's so mind numbing. Thanks a ton for that!

The same dev also has a compiler optimized version of Firefox called Mercury. Got 10% higher performance on Speedometer 2.0 compared to vanilla Firefox.
Do you think Thorium is better than Mercury?
To be fair, most of the things, that Mercury does can be done in vanilla Firefox, if you know how to edit config files, since Mercury is just a Firefox with custom config and branding. Thorium is a little bit different, since Chromium is very limited, when it comes to configuration and many things have to be changed/added in the browser's source code.
PS. Also, Mercury's release cycle leaves a lot to be desired, since it's still stuck on 115 build, when Firefox and Librewolf are on 118.
Is it better then floorp
Can it use Firefox extensions?
According to Phoronix benchmarks, it is not faster. Especially against current v118 vanilla Firefox, which totally dominates it.
I will not argue about particular benchmarks accuracy, but the end result is obviously depends on hardware and OS.
Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention, it's appreciated. A couple other notable features: Ublock Origin pre-installed. Can run in Portable mode. Wierdly, it runs the same speed as Chrome does for me (1% better), but I do have Ublock Origin installed there too. Note that the Windows AVX2 version is supposed to be the fastest version, though I saw just a 1% benefit to doing so over the regular Windows version.
how do you install the windows version ?
Brave did a great job with debloating google but they did a horrible job adding their own bloat, I'm happy to see this lmao
You can just turn off the bloat no? Also brave has a few features chromium and thorium don't that are actually useful.
@@joesu1833 you can disable the brave crypto stuff but there really should be a brave "lite" or something, also I think thorium is perfect for me when it comes to features, dk what brave has that would make me stick with it.
@@joesu1833 which features?
@@joesu1833 having to turn of bloat is still bloat
Has anyone done any benchmarks to see if turning off the bloat of Brave improves the speed?
I tested Thorium browser but its Google promotion in the Sync and Sign-in and the default search engine, turned me off. At least offer Presearch as an option.
I just switched. Speedometer runs 19% faster than on Edge! JetStream also runs just under 5% faster. Overall, everything feels very snappy. Great browser!
Finally someone who's not afraid of calling out Brave as being bloated. Brave is highly overrated, and honestly, if I wanna care about privacy etc. then I def. still prefer Firefox and/or it's derivertives over Brave.
Thanks - always quality content from you. Keep up the good work!
I feel like a good browser gets out of the way and Brave has been doing exactly the opposite more and more
This guy made a Firefox version
I thought I was the only one xD. I dont know why brave is so popular among FOSS enthusiasts, it feels too bloated and "branded" (if that makes sense) and they've had their fair amount of shady moves in the past. Is not a project I would trust tbh.
You are in for a Surprise soon...Firefox is a "Woke" company.
Lol. Keep thinking that until the other shoe drops.
I've been browser hopping for a couple of months now, and some of the features I found were unnecessary to me. For the ones that are, I can just use extensions, so nice video Chris! 👍
I used this browser 2 months ago it was great it had hardware acceleration working out the box which is rare to see in Linux but I switched back to Firefox
I hope the project will get bigger and better
I will give it a shot again after watching this video
As comments have suggested, please also review his other browser, Mercury, and Floorp (Another Firefox fork). Love to know your take on this, despite you being a Chromium guy.
Windows7 was my greatest experience with Windows. I'm not using it anymore now due to it being obsolete. Great info on Thorium, thanks!

I remember when browsers were all about form and function, in the beginning of Firefox, 2005 or so, fast, efficient, then it started to bog down years later. This makes sense, like the old days.
I'm stuck on Win7 and too poor to upgrade my antique machine so this has special meaning for me. I was so disappointed when I lost the Vivaldi (et al.) updates.

I am using Edge on Debian/Sway. It works. And every day there is a new wallpaper.
Geez im still in love with Vivaldi... by your recommendation years ago. Brave just didnt stick with me, honestly i dont NEED the fastest, but i do need the full sync, and vivaldi sync is so easy on win, lin, and android.
wow this dude is dedicated. he made a version for android aswell as a replacement for the android webview. he even made an optimized firefox called mercury!

When you go to the website it starts some background music.
Normally I *HATE* websites that does that, but this is an exception. It is very smooth.
You have helped me discover my favorite browser! I just installed it on my retro Win 8.1 and modern Linux Mint XFCE builds.
Thank you for the Thorium review Chris :) I want to know does the browser include ad blocker or manually install u block origin.
Ublock origin appears to be installed by default - but can easily be uninstalled if you don't want it. (in the windows installer version anyway)
I just downloaded it on windoze... Ublock seems to be installed by default :)
@@LandyVlad_Rides Thanks 😎I installed the browser and it is included and will use this browser rather than brave. Chris showed how fast it is and mine is doing the same thing😎

thanks for covering browsers like this. I will be trying Thorium myself to see if I can get away from Brave. I do have a little concern about updates though.
I keep Firefox on the side as well (trying Betterfox on that too) and I might try Mercury as well.
it sounds great and all, but there's a security concern: is it gonna be as fast as chrome/edge/brave in pushing out updates? probably not as those have entire teams dedicated to their maintenance.
Despite how good this browser is Chris, it seems to fail the "webrtc test" should it be used for VPN. This is where FF is way ahead of the rest regardless of speed. Would appreciate some comments on that mate.
I googled "what is the downside of thorium" and it is downright scary:
Th-233 can become protactinium-233, which in turn becomes a fissile and energy-producing isotope: U-233. Thorium has many qualities but also many disadvantages: difficult to handle, fertile and non-fissile metal, higher risks.
As a web dev and somebody concerned about security: this is definitely not something youd want. There needs to be more than one dev for sure and the team needs a good track record. The browser is, besides you as a human, one of the most vulnerable parts of your system.
Good thing it is all open source. Obviously, bad intentions can stay under the radar for quite some time, but it's up to the community to check the code.
That was my thought as well. Sounds great, but I will not leave it up to one person.
@@covrtdesign5279 Better than leaving it up to a team of incompetent, overpaid, disinterested employees like Firefox does.
Open source does not add security if no one checks the code, and with obscure small projects it's unlikely there are people going through the code@@NakedTrashPanda

Not enough of a difference between vanilla firefox and throrium based on Speedometer 2.1 results they are pretty close
throrium: 415 runs/min vs firefox 348 runs/min (mac M1)
and I still trust Mozilla a bit more :)
how did u installed it?
@@KatieGeorgieva I think I've downloaded the dmg file (Thorium_MacOS_ARM.dmg for silicon Mx) from their website
The problem with Thorium is updates. I am very concerned about how frequently security updates come out. Thorium does not have autoupdates, and the current Throum version is based Chromium 117 which is 3 versions behind what most other Chromium based browsers are on now.
Temporarily suspended my use of the Brave browser, and now using Thorium. Exported my Bookmarks and passwords easily in minutes. Nice so far. 😊 Thanks, Chris.
Looks great!
Just missing one critical feature (that is still broken in most Chrome browsers)... Ctrl-Tab switching as most recently used (MRU) ✅
I cannot use a browser without this option (fortunately Firefox and Brave have it)
It works for me running it on a fairly fresh Arch/DWM install for whatever it's worth.
I have downloaded both Thorium and Mercury. Today Mercury browser suddenly crashed while using. I thought it was a normal thing as it's newly developed.
Guess what , Kaspersky uninstalled it as the Mercury browser was detected as a Trojan
I remember that the strength, beyond stability, of Chrome in its early editions was its lack of bloat in its early days.
Thorium won’t run on my main desktop as it wants newer CPUs, using newer instructions to overcome performance issues. Tried the Raspberry Pi edition on Raspberry Pi 4B - that one reports that it is the wrong architecture (arm64 in the package while Raspbian system is armhf).
for me it wasn't working also on my windows laptop but I searched a bit on the thorium website and found the SSE3 Builds that worked just fine 4 me.
try using it too on your main desktop
There's an SSE3 build under the windows 7 section that should run on older hardware. I'm in the same boat, not having a CPU that supports SSE4
@@andythekitsune I run Linux more or less universally, so the Windows version won’t do anything for me.
Mercury is much faster than standard Firefox, but does not play well with at least some video streaming services. It will not play Netflex videos (which is ironic because it does play the previews just fine). Amazon prime complains that you can't play high definition video, which is odd because the videos look much better than on vanilla Firefox.
Love the lack of bloat. Don't like some of the video restrictions.
I installed it - seems very quick and doesn't need an adblocker - splendid.
The entire OS hangs after closing the browser, which happens often
Exist any way to remove microsoft edge or any other appx from the start menu without uninstall it?
I was the same like you. From Vivaldi to Brave and eventually switched from it because of all the crypto to a smaller japanese browser i found called Floorp. Its a firefox fork with lots of patches and its kinda like Vivaldi. Really customizable and really fast. Would love to see your opinion on it.
Vivaldi is also kinda like Vivaldi.
what?@@MrShoorf
Brave is good specially when its come to blocking ads and trackers it does the job smoothly but for crypto stuff you need to turn off them from setting and then you can use it smoothly
@@unfunnynaqqash people who use brave mainly for adblocking don't know what extensions are 😅
Please also cover Mercury Brower of the same developer which is Firefox equivalent. Huge fan. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Windows defender says the mini_installer on github is a risk ... hate to be "that guy", but all my spidey senses are tingling. Is this just part of the experience jumping into this rabbit hole?
Hey Chris, how does it compare to the Mullvad and Duck Duck Go desktop browsers? I'm primarily a Windows user.
Off topic, a question on your Linux journey if I may. How long did it take you to go from zero to advanced Linux user?
Dumb questions. The last one in particular. 80k hours. Applies to everything. 80/20 rule. Applies to everything.
@@Look_What_You_Dideveryone has to start somewhere right ? rather than just sitting on windows OS, coming up to face the complexity of linux and feeling overwhelmed when lot of it doesn't make sense is a demotivating process.
As a noob Linux user myself, i encourage people to just try to learn to install a Distro like mint (as a dual boot) and slowly take your own time in it.
If it's not DE-GOOGLED then it still collects and sends data/telemetry to google and others? Am I right?
Yeah, there's zero chance of me using any Chromium browser when Firefox exists. If I were to use one, I'd use Vivaldi. They at least try to keep it sorta un-google-infected, and it has by far the most customizable and feature filled UI.
You are right in the fact it is the best so far. I almost was going to switch back to firefox for the manifest v2 support, but thorium is going to keep support for it
He ain't the only one still using Windows 7. I'll probably for the foreseeable future have a Windows 7 system up and running. And by the way, I'm no noob here. I've been doing this stuff for over 40 years.
Installed the linux version on Linux Mint with no problem. Attempted to install the default windows version on Win 10 22H2 (latest build) via the mini-installer, the zip file, and even winget. Ultimately those gave application error 142. Based on comments under the github "issues" I tried the SSE3 version, which worked. I'm running a 2010 era Intel i3-370M on my laptop.
I wouldn't call a power user using Windows 7 a "weirdo", it is the best workstation in existence so far.
Yeah but its EOL so security vulnerabilities are a thing
have you ever heard of debian
@@sleepynet13Have you ever heard of Fedora?
Neither Thorium nor Mercury have worked out of the box for me on Linux. I use Debian 12 with KDE. For Thorium, I tried installing from the deb file and adding the repo. Both browsers crash as soon as I try to spin them up. I'll have to look into it. I'll give them a shot on Windows. Thanks for sharing this.
I looked into it and basically these browsers do not support my CPU. Sad for me. :(
netflix don't work. any workaround?
Some people have been talking about Speedometer tests. I've run the test 3 times versus Edge. The first time I ran the test Thorium beat out Edge by about .2 (7.4 to 7.6). The second time Thorium was 7.6, Edge was 8.1. The third time Thorium was 7.1, Edge was 13.7.
So if a higher number is better, I guess Edge is at least winning for me.
its a great suggestion. Please add thorium in the windows debloater tool as well that would be great
its really nice also has sync support
While interesting, in the current state of the market I cannot imagine using a chromium-based browser, since they are close to being the only player. Firefox (and even safari) are the only brake on the google train right now
how can i install this Browser?
Testing Thorium right now on my 2013 MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma through OpenCore Legacy Patcher and HOLY $4!7 ! Update: Resuming the video on Thorium now! It loads the video before it's even loaded the rest of the page AMAZING
Netflix doesn't work on this browser made me want to end it all because i can't find a fix for it.
Never mind fast, is it standards compliant and can it handle the billions of websites that are not compliant ?
Have you tried his firefox variant Mercury, which implements some of ghostery & librefox security forks?
Why is Google Hangouts unable to be disabled in Thorium? It’s ultra sus and driving me mad.
Thanks for the tip Chris. This browser looks nice. I have test it now and so far this one is FAAAST :) . Works well in Android also. Also thanks for all tip and information you share.
Thanks for this CT and thank you Alex. This is the last video I'm watching on Chromium. Switching to Thorium.
Thank you for telling us about this! I will definitely by downloading it soon
Ive had more than 60% increase in performance after switching from chrome to thorium, very cool!
There should be an unfurried-thorium.
I use Opera Lite on slow connections because of the server-side compression. I use Vivaldi most of the time now.
I wish the thorium browser for android have google sync too 😕 . Solid browser on windows.
Perhaps he updates his Windows version regularly but his Mac version hasn't been updated in months. Damn shame, I went back to Brave.
I know right, can't believe Chris is recommending a vulnerable browser, when updates only comes monthly.
Windows 7 doesn’t get updates or don’t even recognized some flash drives ik bc I had to fix my fiancée pc the other day 😂made me miss it got childhood nastalgia
I'd have definitely given Mercury a try if it had Mac support. Looks like good stuff.
Looks great, but I always end up going back to Firefox because of how easy it is to transfer your setup between systems...And no, I don't use cloud syncing. Does Thorium support local config backups?
this is also my question
I wish there was an installer for this project. I'm not tech savvy enough to follow all the Microsoft Visual Studio compile instructions :(
Should I be worried that I can't disable or remove Hangouts from Thorium?
Holy cats. I'm normally a Firefox user, so I ran Speedometer 2.0 against Firefox, Chrome and Thorium. FF was the worst, scoring an 83.5. Chrome was next with a 92.5. Thorium scored 227. lol That's insanity.
EDIT: Just tested Mercury on my machine, as well. It scored a 177. It's crazy how fast these browsers are compared to vanilla FF and Chrome. EDIT2: Just tested Brave, coming in at 187.
Are you sure about security on this forks?
downloaded the Android and Windows version after your suggestion. Thanks.
@ChrisTitisTech For Mac they have a delayed release. I tried to build with latest version but failed to do so for mac arm. There is vanilla chromium available which we can use without a google account. My Question is where does Thorium and Chromium stands in terms on privacy and security. Is it a equivalent alternative who wants to stay on the latest chromium release for Desktop. For Mobile we have now cromite (Forked from bromite) which is a good alternative on andriod.
It's really relevant searching for the fastest browser, nowadays when we are using 12 core CPUs?
I don't really need fast, when you working with Ai LLM's important is the smallest use of RAM-which needed to LLM.
What are the security features offered?
If a dev has enough talent to contribute code, my suspicion is that they have/make enough money to donate too (you mentioned if you can't donate money then donate code). Just sayin' for an excuse to add a comment for your YT algorithm. :) Cheers!
I just tested it both on Windows and on Android and the performance, as measured by the benchmarks, was on par or worse than Brave. I still need to do some further testing but, it does feel snappier, but that might just be a confirmation bias.
One of the things I have noticed with it, is that if the performance/power of your CPU is beyond a certain threshold, you won't get any higher speedometer or octane numbers. However, for a given high intensity workload, you will see less CPU usage for the same perceived performance compared to other Chromium forks.
@thoriumdevel interestingly, that's in line with what I have measured thus far. Thorium does seem to outperform Brave on my old and weak tablet. I was wondering if maybe the Chromium base version might have something to do with the weird results on newer hardware? Brave is on 118 while Thorium is on 117.
Either way, when I get the time I will do some further testing on new and old hardware.
Man thank you I just installed it and WOW! It is superfast!!!
This sounds exciting, I thought Brave would be the browser I'd stick with but there is a bug where if you have "hardware acceleration" enabled blur would occur on the screen and when watching videos it would black out constantly and it looks like thorium has the same issue aswell.
I used to have that bug with Brave as well when I was using an Nvidia GPU. I upgraded to an AMD card and the problem went away.
i forgot to update, thanks for the suggestions i did some reasearch and found out it was the dx11 api causing it, opengl fixed it :)
Thorium is dope but the woolyss build of Chromium comes preinstalled with all proprietary codecs and is more up-to-date.
I opened Thorium after downloading it on Windows 11 and it opens in that god damned AWFUL "efficiency mode" set by Windows (the default mode) which prevents it from accessing all of your system resources (so the browser can't be run at full power, in the interest of being "eco-friendly"). There's a workaround that I follow that fixes this problem in Google Chrome AND Brave Browser and shuts off opening in this mode.
Followed that method to the T with the Thorium shortcut, but somehow, it never works. It always opens in efficiency mode, EVERYTIME. With the exact same method. So I'll never be able to experience what the browser can actually do if it's running with full access to system resources because it will never have that unless I can get it to stop loading in that damned mode. Such a fucking shame... :(
What’s Chris’s beef with Firefox?
It sucks the Google D
how to update in windows? download new version and install?
Thorium is not going anywhere until it has a simple install program.
Excited for Thorium browser 👍
Thank you for the recommendation! It really does feels snappier especially the AVX2 variant. 😉👍
Probably making this as my default browser from now on and uninstall Opera GX 😁
Now I'm intrigued to try out Mercury and use it as my backup browser and remove Edge 😄
Could you also do a comparison with Vivaldi VS Thorium. Because I have moved from Firefox to Vivaldi for the reason of the StartPage SpeedDial area as when I resync on Firefox I always have to reorder my saved link how I had it all the time. Vivaldi after syncing put it back in the order I left it.
I'm glad Thorium is finally getting it's recognition. Let's go!!!
Nice video. I will try the browser out.
Omg i love this. Please add this to the windows utility tool.
