    In my experience my Bristlenose would never hurt a fly. Currently have both in sumner tubs. Surprised they were hard to find in Norway, when they’re sold on every corner in the USA. For us it’s the quality shrimp that a struggle to find locally.

    Oooh never thought of putting a pleco with shrimp. I tended to stick to nano fish like chili rasbora and axelrodi. The shrimp are all over the tanks like ricochetting bullets yet the fish hang out out at the back. Great idea about the bristlenose. I could put my pleco juvies in the shrimp tank to grow out now I know it can be done.

    I love them. I just got two of them in the neocaridina tanks, and they’re getting along just fine. Some are a little lazy and some really clean the tank through. It is kind of tricky to catch them because they can get stuck in the net, but they’re not aggressive at all.

    • @hobragen
      @hobragen 2 года назад +1

      Yeah otocinclus are helpful too, but they’re too small and wouldn’t clean the tank that much if there’s only one. Will never attack or eat the baby shrimp tho. I have two… "barbo cerezo" I don’t know the English name, they’re also pretty peaceful and don’t really care about the shrimp, also they look great with a few red shrimp and/or plants with a little orange/reddish on top.

    Good choice of tank mates with the bristleys, clown plecos are good too, smaller than the bristles but produce similar levels of plant/shrimp/snail food😉. Catching wise i normally just use a net and lift the piece of wood out so they drop off into the net, im normally catching 100 at a time though lol, currently got 1,300 ish 😂. Other good tank mates are pigmy corydoras. Bristlenoses do eat plenty so an algae wafer a day per plec is about enough, or a chunk of green veg, courgette is good.

    Carful when you handle the larger ones by hand because those have larger spikes that protrude from their cheeks when scared. I didn’t know this until I scooped mine up with a net and he got tangled in it because of the spikes.

  • @StephenBevilacqua

    I raise them and it's better just to catch them with your hands this way you can feel them and not damage with a net but the babies are much harder to catch what I do for them is put a small net and catch them when there swimming to go into the net. I wish you all the good luck in your hobby, really enjoyed your vids. Stephen

    I don't have plecos myself (looking for some nice longfin variants), but from what I know the best way to catch them is to shoo them in a glass jar with your hand. Using nets on them is risky, since they can get stuck in there if they struggle too much (I believe they have spikes on their pectoral fins)

    Hi Mark, I have watched type show on and off for the past 2 years. I'm staying to watch it more and more as one of my shrimp colonies has been plaguedwith planeria and I'm having to redo the tank. I'm also getting into caradena shrimp as well so just looking for more tips. Bristlenose plecos are awesome with neocaradena shrimp. I breed plecos and endlers with my cherry shrimp and my shrimp colony still thrives. Sorry to toot my own horn, but I'm actually got a video on my own channel where I talk about tank mates for shrimp. I just wanted to reach out and wish you luck with your precos. I know you don't need it. You'll do fine.

    You can see in my tanks, I keep fish, snails, shrimp and plants in ALL tanks (except hospital). I find setting up an ecosystem that is pretty much self sustaining is the best. Really, look at my vids (they are awful but show what I mean). At a minimum I keep a trio of guppy's in each tank, but I also have a community tank with swords, various tetras and danios, loaches ... lots of fish and it is my heaviest breed out of shrimp.

    I keep Least Killifish in my tank with neocaridinas. The females get about 3cm and the males get about 2cm. With them being so small, they can only fit the tiniest shrimp babies in their mouths. I've never seen them hunt down shrimp, but I'm sure I've lost a few due to crimes of opportunity. The tank is heavily planted so that cuts down on predation as well.
    I keep an MFF trio and get about 30-40 babies a month. They're a live bearer and there's no predation on the young. I trade the Least Killifish along with other things from the same tank, like plants and snails, for store credit at the LFS. I rarely have to pay for anything out of pocket.
    While it might not be a symbiotic relationship like the shrimp eating pleco poop, one does benefit greatly from the other. I'm able to feed the shrimp a much higher quality diet of foods, such as frozen stuff more often.
