Man, the helplessness of only being able to say "RUN" and at the same time, not being able to save them must have been very traumatic for the survivors.
I cannot even begin to imagine how you bounce back from that, the clean-up alone is a massive undertaking. Bless all those souls lost and those who survived, bless them truly.
this goes to the firefighter who feels responsible about the lives he lost: this isn't your fault at all. you & everyone else did what they could. you're only human. please don't blame yourself for it.
omg. I started crying REALLY hard when he started blaming his self. seeing the expression on is face everytime they showed him you can tell his mental health is no longer good or not even there at all!!! i hope hes doing alright. so sad
If I could say something to him. would be this true; If it wasn't for you being there so many more people would have died, you where there saving lives even risking your own. You did more then you could to save others. I have live through many strong earthquakes and my night mares are about surviving Tsunamis with kids.
From 16 i dreamt of tsunamis a couple of times a week leading up to the Indonesian tsunami. After that the dreams stopped for awhile then started again, then the Japanese tsunami happened. I still have the dreams every couple of months now but no where near as much as before.
I Live here in Fukushima, i witnessed everything. Its a painful memory to see this documentary again. I was working then 5 mins away from our house. Everything into dark at that time. I don’t know what to do. The only thing in my mind is to pick up my 2 Sons in their school. I was so worried, crying and afraid. So i pick my 2 Sons and we got home but after we got home the firetrucks are everywhere and announced that we need to evacuate because Tsunami is coming so i drove my kids to the higher place, im shaking so bad. Thanks God were all okay. The ff day the start that our lives change from then. Another bad news came when Nuclear Powerplant is jn Danger. So we run away from our town. Its been 7 years now. Thanks to Almighty God for saving us.
This is a rather haunting collection of videos. It is well-presented and respectful. The video that was captured during this disaster allowed many of us across the world to see what a huge disaster a tsunami truly is. I had such a juvenile vision of a tsunami as a single giant wave that crashed on the beach then receded. So, I knew to stay off the beach if a tsunami siren blared. I had no idea that the sea inundated the land and just kept coming. I feel such sadness for all the people touched by this event and by this subject.
Joe Collier same. It’s scary seeing how much we under judged the power of them. The scary part is you don’t have much notice. With a hurricane, I have at least a weeks notice. I couldn’t imagine mere minutes.
@@aaronm8143 It's cause of the lack of reference that tsunamis give until they're right in your face. Even wave heights are hard to gauge. They also slowly creep instead of the garbage cinematic depictions that show fuck-off-gigantic walls of water crashing into a capital city all at once.
This was an unusual tsunami in many ways. The water just kept coming and coming. These things are very rare but they happen. It makes me hope that in the future, there will be some tall stout concrete buildings and artificial hills of refuge to provide better protection in case of disaster. Whether it is tsunamis or hurricane storm surges, groups of these can save many lives. Especially now that there might be a danger of sea level rise due to global warming. Buildings need to be provided as areas of refuge for people, such as that high school, with portions even higher for these rare events. Just in case.
Well it's because people mostly the elderly experienced Tsunamis with less than 2 stories high in their time so they build 3 or 4 stories high evacuation centre and think this is high enough. But in March 11 2011 the tsunami is higher what they were expecting it, some survivors said that they warned that a 3-6 metres high tsunami is coming but instead the tsunami hight was more than 15-20 metres or even higher then that literally caught everyone of guard. Take Rikuzentakata for example where the warning center warned a 3-6 metres tsunami is coming and most people evacuated to buildings with 3-4 stories high thinking that it is high enough and also some evacuation center are located more than one kilometres far from the coast, but when the tsunami came it was all to late. The tsunami ended up reach the hight of 16 metres and every building that is below 5 stories high are already been submerged and there're also many people are taking refugee in side. Some buildings that has hundreds of evacuees left with no survivors at all and some with hundreds of evacuees left with only few survivors to live to tell the tail.
for those wondering why there were still so many people driving their cars in the documentary NOVA:Surviving the Tsunami a woman explains that in her car she could not hear the emergency warnings to evacuate at all
@Gayle Elizabeth I think you miss the part when he say that "Most people was already inside emergency centers" and that "I was telling people to evacuate through the loud speaker" the reason that he was at the levee was because most people has already been evacuated so he come there to check the water while warning the few people who remain.
the lady pushing the kids in the buggy all bundled up together. OH makes my heart hurt! That woman with all those tiny souls in her care, the parents stuck at work without their babies and the babies without their parents. :(
its sad seeing the firefighter guy suffer over feeling responsible for those lives. he should not attempt to claim that responsibility. he went above and beyond staying that long, and there was no shame in finally turning and running to save himself at that point. he stayed to the last minute trying to get people to rush out of there, trying to save people who clearly were not taking the situation seriously enough. ultimately those lives were beyond his reach and only nature could claim the responsibility for their deaths. eventually youve got to look out for your own welfare. he waited til such a point that to delay any further for someone else's sake would have just cost both their lives.
That firefighter put himself at very great risk, and in doing so he saved many lives. He stayed until the very last moment, calling out the warning and instructing people where to go. I hope he can give himself peace, and a reward, for saving so many lives.
Yes, his grievance broke my heart. He was just one small voice, in one small "thumb-tack" spot on the map. Yet, the rest of his life, he'll be without peace... carrying the burden, that he didn't do enough. Only God can free him... I pray He does.
Just started my new life in Japan when the big quake happened. I told my wife to run away from the apartment with our baby until i could keep the way free from the bookshelf falling. Night time was something unreal with lights of big fires in the distance and the second wave of shakes. We were far away from the sea but to see what happened there was so painful and shocking. From that day i looked at life with different eyes in the respect of all that people who died.
Dam, the part that is the most heart wrenching to watch was at 12:13 how she cries and screams "RUN" and also other crowds of people just wailing ...so horrible 😢
i was there all i could done it's save a two years old girl, she lost her entire family and now i'm her father...god sand her to my arms.....still crying myself, very sorrow for all those kids i saw washed away from primary school....after 3 months she called me dad.....and we cried together a lot

Who's watching Jan 2020? My God this is so sad. Imagine everything you have worked for.. almost all of it are gone.. Unless you have a good insurance. But at the end of the day.. all we really need is food and shelter and I guess during those times those things are better appreciated than anything else.
I just watched it 1/15/2020 . So sad. I have watched a few things about that tsunami and it does not get any easier. I live in Humboldt County, California, across the ocean from where this happened. A little North of me, a boat from Japan was found. It was a boat used by a High School in Japan to teach the students about fishing. Here is the story about that, www.sacbee.com/news/local/environment/article54052080.html
It is interesting to see on google maps the town that have rebuilt almost ten years later, and the scars that remain of that event. I remember when it happened, and it is strange to think that already so much time has passed.
I always find myself rewatching these videos all of the time. I haven't seen this one yet, I'm in awe at the raw power of nature. The scale of destruction was so massive. The Japanese sure are persevering, they've over came a lot of natural disasters. As well as two unfortunate events caused by the atom bombs. I'd never forgive my country for what it did. Wish that there could of been another way to end that war. But that's a topic for another day. I have the upmost respect for the Japanese people though.

And, they are not alone , this is a world wide togetherness event ! And Sharing is the act of LOVE ! And the children of the whole wide world are watching
As an American I can remember the impact this had on me, I cried then, and I cried now and I was on the other side of the planet so Its hard to imagine the sheer horror these poor souls went through during and after. I have a lot of respect them. I will never forget.
@@GreenBananaz it’s not my fault you lack empathy for others. For the United States; the National Weather Service received the option of enhanced wording after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region in the summer of 2005.
I was nice in safe in Washington State. I had the day off from work so I slept in till 5 minuets from noon. I woke up impulsively and decided to turn on the noon news. Immediately my screen showed a tsunami wave EATING green houses and feilds. No commentary was needed, I knew THAT was a tsunami...especially after what happened to Indonesia. It was a literal 1000 year event according to Japanese records (last one like thus occurred about 965AC ish). If the same thing occurs off the North West Coast....they are SCREWED! Japan was one of the most prepared nations on earth for a disaster like that. More would of died had many not always heeded the tsunami warning/alarm taught since birth and sought high ground.
It was a terrible terrible day... living a few prefectures away watching people being washed away on live TV...slept in the living room floor that night with all my kids, woken up every few minutes from the aftershocks. The Jr high school graduation a few days earlier was a somber and sad event with most parents and teachers who gave speeches crying and telling the kids to live their lives to the fullest for all the HS kids who would not be able to graduate today. Remember seeing a piece on TV that day about a boy who was the only member of his graduating class to survive. Those were dark times for us.
@@ladyday3115 i cant imagine what would happen if you are the only one graduating while all of your friends is somewhere out there... its really2 traumatic and memorable for the rest of your life. i cant imagine the haunting memory of them... well, enough of it...
I remember watching the news in the U.K. as this occurred. As a family we cried for people we knew were going to lose their lives...those on foot running with the tsunami close behind, those in cars floating away. It was terrible to watch but hoped our will power would miraculously help in some way. To the fire truck driver....your guilt is because you care but you should not carry this burden. You should live a good life, Remembering those that perished with love not responsibility. You do not own that tsunami. It was an act of nature that reminded the world of its power. The losses teach all not to skimp on protections and warnings and to respect nature at its worst. ❤️Japan
The gentleman who was concerned of not saving lives, I hope you can forgive yourself. What you witnessed and endured was so unreal for your mind to cope with. . Forgiving yourself brings healing..
Chocolate Cake I always think of the 1000's he must have saved, by putting himself in danger, driving, honking, yelling evacuation warnings..etc. This poor guy even dreams of his guilt. Like he could have done more. This was 8 years ago, I hope he's had therapy, is still a fireman, and has realized he went above and beyond. He's extremely brave. Hope these messages reach him somehow.
He has nothing to forgive himself for, this young man went above and beyond to try and get ppl to safety,if he had stayed much longer he wiuld have lost his and his wifes lives he was a very brave young man....
I can't imagine being lucky enough to reach higher safer ground in time and then look on completely and utterly helpless at the people who are running and knowing there's not a damn thing you can do but watch them wash away. I am so sorry to the survivors who will carry that helpless burden for the rest of their lives.
In a situation as this i can not imagine the scale of helplessness People would feel but at the same time how lucky they were if they survived. Hopefully the making of this show is part of the recovery process for the survvors to feel that they can at least educate at the same time tell their personal story so they can feel that the world does not think that there was something they could have done as many times thru the show they repeat how they were helpless to help as video shows. I wish peace among the survivors that this was way bigger than they understand and they do not feel guilt for the rest of their lives as I understand that the images will be with them the rest of their lives on top of the .loss of friends and family.
Holy crap. I've seen a lot of videos of the emergency workers driving around warning people and not thinking of themselves. Those red trucks being swept away... I wonder how many of those brave men died...
@@Biswit I saw a video of at least 12 men trying desperately to close a seawall. they were turning this big wheel, the water was building up around them. They didn't give up and were swept away. They did not get the gate closed. RUclips probably took it down, I doubt any of those men lived. I don't know if they were firefighters, if I remember correctly, they were wearing business attire. It was so sad, they tried knowing if they got the gate closed, many more would live, but they were on the wrong side and would die. That's bravery.
These people are beautiful. Their ability to understand and look out for others despite their ability (or lack thereof) to do so. These people are sincerely good people.
+Kathleyn Rice I've met a few Japanese who've moved here to the mid-western U.S. & they are nice. I was taken back by how accommodating they are. I believe this comes from living in a country with so many people in such a small area. They've learned to be accommodating & polite because they've had to live in close quarters with each other. The alternative would be to let it get to you & spend a lot of time being irritated/angry, fighting with your neighbors.

Also folks, I have many degrees from college and have researched this. We were blindsided as we thought the fleet was going to attack at another place. So, I’m not the stupid one here. Since the beginning , it has been said that all the evil you send out into the world will come back at you. Our God is a powerful God. He can be wrathful, also. Maybe all these things happening is their fate, as set by God, for all they’ve done. And, Mr Mahdokt, war is a terrible thing, and I pray for the innocents lost. I am not bitter, nor do I show bitterness, I just don’t trust sneaky, lying, disgusting, war mongering countries that think their way is the only one. I don’t like people who speak lies out if both sides of their mouths, and then.....and THEN....,want us to send food, medical supplies, planting supplies and science...,all the time speaking out of both sides of their mouths, telling untruths, lies, and unholy crap to others about our country.
I was a senior in high school in America when this happened. We had a foreign exchange student from Japan who was pulled from class by administrators to try and have him get in contact with his family immediately to know if they were okay. Fortunately they were, but I couldn't imagine being on the other side of the world while something like this was happening to your friends and family back home.
@JudahBenLevi I found the guy who is the most terrified of death. Can't believe you feel so out of control of your own life that you wish death upon millions of people. Disgusting.
@Voracious Reader Whoa there, that's not what I meant. The guy was basically told, "you are a replacement child," and I think that would be hard to live with. Why bother to tell him that? By the way, I have also suffered quite a bit, but that's neither here nor there.
Yes, I know what you mean. There was a time when individual feelings were not overmuch considered and many hurtful things were said in daily conversation. There are still some Northern European cultures which seem to maintain truth overshadows consideration even when it's not important. Germany, UK, Holland and other parts of Scandinavia come to mind. It's a level of human development and there is no compassion without empathy.
Thank you for translating. I've seen this before and could not understand what was being said. You all were very brave. The translation made it where I could watch and understand what was happening and I did not cry as much this time.
What still absolutely blows my mind is the fact that this particular initial earthquake was so strong that it actually shortened our day by 0.06 seconds! Also, it was so massive when the plate slipped, that parts of Japan's coastline sank up to 15 meters in some places! What an awesome and magnificent planet we live on! (btw, before any of you bite my head off, look up the ACTUAL definition of awesome)
Ah, my friend.. we do strange things when "shocked into a disaster". I was on my way to my prom, in a rented tux, and the weather was poor-- slowed down with traffic to a crawl... but the tanker truck behind us.. 3 vehicle behind me did not.. he slammed into those cars and ended up on my trunk. The tanker exploded as we were scrambling to get out and run.. and I thought.. damn.. this is rental tux.. and I left the bow tie on my console.. I'd better go back and get it. My date looked at me, and glared in my eyes and stated " Big Picture John.. get the big picture in your mind". 12 people died in this horrific accident... and I wound up marrying that woman, and am still in love with her 20 years later.
Probably the best documentary about the Japan tsunami I've seen. Very well done. I only moved to Hawaii the year before and remember the fear and uncertainty we experienced that night as our own tsunami sirens blared into the wee hours of the morning. None of us knew how bad it would be here. Fortunately, it was nothing compared to what Japan experienced, or even Hilo experienced in the past. Just some minor damage to homes and businesses mainly along the Kona coast. Yet, we always prepare because we know that one day again a devastating tsunami will affect our islands.
I'm glad that Hawaii didn't experience the same devastation as Japan during the March 11th, 2011 earthquake and tsunami or even the April Fool's Day tsunami in 1946.
My mother live in Japan. I was in school when I heard the news from one of our teacher, I thought he was just pulling some frank on our class. But when I got home the news was true. I remember I was trembling in fear I kept on calling my mom but I couldn't contact her. I was crying the whole night while still trying to contact her. After two days I was finally able to talk to her. The area where she is wasn't effected by the tsunami but she was effected by the earthquake.
Dear MS. Namoco, im glad to hear you found and finally got to talk with your Mother again, also im glad that you, yourself survived such devastation , I live on the east coast of the U.S. here in the state of Maryland, we had a earth quake that shook my home for several minutes ,but after 4 or 5 minutes it had stopped, I remember the shaking scared me, I had never experienced anything quite like it before ,I never felt so helpless in my entire life ,there was nothing I could do when the shaking started ,I began to pray while making my way to the front door, the planet made me feel as if im nothing, no control over anything, I never felt so useless and scared , as people on a planet that seems to be alive it does as it wants when it wants and how it wants , people will continue to live and die by the planets anger or GODS Will, but when the planet decides to unleash its hell upon us there,s very little we can do to get out of its way, surviving such a catastrophy as an earth quake and a tsunami both is so lucky, I think you are very pretty, as well as smart, and loving as you,ve proved that by how you spoke about trying to get in touch with your Mom so bad, I believe you Love her very, very much, im glad you and your family survived , may GOD keep you and protect you all, I cant begin to imagine being there in the midst of all that horror that terrible day, you look so sweet, and nice I am very glad you made it , your beautiful inside and out, may GOD continue to bless you, W.H.W. 10-17-19

yes, me too, I have only just found this documentary. The most harrowing accounts, told with such grace but quiet underlying heartache, and the most astonishing footage. It is very sad so many died but a tribute to Japan that many more did not die.
I was in a 5.1 as a 10 year old in Tacoma Washington. That is 45 seconds I will NEVER forget. I can't imagine worse shaking lasting for 5 freaking minuets. Prawns to Tokyo for their strict building code. Very impressive that most of the building survived!

can't stop my tears while watching this. been living here in Japan for more than 20yrs, I feel quite lucky that my place is always safe from the natural disasters. I love Japan whatever disaster happens.
I have to admit, I keep watching these, because it so unbelievable. It seems like it is harmless and will slow down. Then it gets big real fast. It will fool you if you there live, and see it taking place. I was in denial by watching on RUclips. This and being close to an erupting volcano is worst than a tornadoe, cause it covers so much ground and a liquid state, pouring everywhere like a big messy spill.
I pity the firefighters who were trying to warned the locals about the incoming tsunami and ended up got stuck in their cars when tsunami hit. Did they survive?
I was here the whole time watching and waiting to see if someone was swept away on camera, thinking it wouldn’t happen.. but when I saw that man at thirty two minutes holding onto the gate for dear life as he plunged into the water made me break down in tears. Marc-André Berthelot you sound like the evolutionists, who'll say anything so as not to give credit to Whom credit is truly due, God. Submarines caused the tsunami? Try the "fact" that Gods Word is truth, w/multiple centuries of fulfilled prophesies proving that scriptures warnings should be heeded. As of today only 500k ppl [approx] in Japan claim Biblical Christianity as their faith. Thats 0.4% of the total population. The rest follow either "false" so-called "Christian" religions i.e. works based, sacerdotal religions that preach/teach "another gospel" that Paul warns against in Galatians [like catholicism] or they follow other forms of false religions such as shinto and buddhism, which are Japan's two major religions. Besides these, Japan has multiple pagan gods that it worships from Japanese mythology which leads me back to the foolishness of your initial statement: "People like to blame God, but it was not God"...wow. A nation who willfully rejects Jesus Christ, yet you don't believe that God is trying to get their attention in these last days? Colossians 2:8 "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [science/conspiracy], which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ." Marc-André, God trys to get ppls attention through "general revelation" [the wonder of creation] but they give the glory to another instead: Romans 1:20 "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." Nothing like this happens w/o God causing it to happen: Amos 3:6 "If a trumpet is blown in a city will not the people tremble? If a calamity occurs in a city has not the LORD done it" Proverbs 1:24-31 “Because I called and you refuse, I stretched out My hand and no one paid attention; And you neglected all My counsel And did not want My reproof; I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. “Then they will call on Me, but I will not answer; They will seek Me diligently but they will not find Me Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD. “They would not accept My counsel, They spurned all My reproof. “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way And be satiated with their own devices." Marc-André, maybe its time to consider more of Jesus Christ, and less baseless conspiracy which will profit you nothing when the Lord returns to receive His own.
I feel for the firefighter. He did the best he could with the information he was given. Of course he would tell people to go to the shelters. Nobody could have seen that coming. I hope the guilt he feels has lessened as the years have gone by. Poor guy.
I don't think this disaster will ever stop being incredibly sad, even after a decade now. People in Japan are still reeling from the aftermath, wether it be from being placed in temporary camps or still searching for loved ones, and only just recently are they actually removing the fuel from the damaged reactors. It's incredibly tragic to think about each time I see Fukushima pop up in the papers again.
Documentaries like these always remind me that we humans are helpless in the face of disaster. In one second, our entire lives can be flipped. My heart aches for the lives lost and the families torn apart from this disaster. The story that broke me the most was that guy who lost his nine year old sister to that older tsunami. Imagine how broken all these families are. This is so heartbreaking to watch.
It would be very interesting to see an update now that it's been nearly 10 years - how are these towns doing now? How are these people now? It was very inspiring to hear how some felt hopeful that people are resilient and will rebuild their lives and their towns again.
Many have likely recovered. But, there are probably quite a few towns that were never rebuilt, and it's inhabitants who once lived there who had to relocate. They are the only ones left to know what was there. Very haunting.

I'm watching exactly 8 years later, Today is 03/11/2019. May those who lost their lives be Resting in Peace. This is really scary. Florida is all flatlands, no mountains and no hills. A peninsula; that, if this were to happen on the East Coast, in the Atlantic Ocean, to the same extent as it did in the Pacific, there would be little to no chance of survival. God Be With Us All.

A far greater risk and more frightening prospect is the Cascadia fault just off Washington's and Oregon's coast. It has a history of huge quakes and like Japan's fault line, Cascadia's is the worst kind of fault - a 'subduction' fault. i got scared sitting at home seeing that tsunami on tv..then imagine what must have happened with those who suffered...what mother nature can do ........its beyond our imagination
This one I remember clearly with the large nuclear meltdown. The '04 tsunami I vaguely remember it being on the news and seeing some of the footage before my parents changed the channel.
The one gentleman who did not hesitate to leave while the earthquake was still occurring probably saved numerous lives. He needs to be honored,it takes a lot of balls to not succumb to shock but he kept his cool and made sure people didn't waste one crucial second.
I was shopping in the supermarket when the eartquake struck! Even though I was in Aichi prefecture the earthquake could be felt. I remember suddenly the ground started moving back and fourth REALLY slowly and at first I thought my head was spinning and that i was just dizzy so I held onto the shelf next to me. But when I looked around the other people where holding onto the shelves too and then I knew something was wrong! When the shaking stopped people started walking to the registers but the area was totally deserted as everyone was crowded around a television near the entrance and saw the footage of the earthquake and a little later the tsunami.
The horror of this event is overwhelming and yet these amazing people come back and continue on. I have a huge respect for these people and a deep sadness to this day for all of the lives lost.
I know I can't even imagine something like that. She cared so much about the people of her town trying to run away, but she just couldn't do anything but scream and hope for their safety.
I'm waiting for the opinions of the people who have actually been through a Tsunami, after all everything is easy in theory. Everyone is going on about how people are stupid, or what they would have done, but they've not been in the situation before. No one was prepared for the size of this, they had made precautious but not enough and people lost their lives. Talking about your amazing running skills or how you "would have known" to do this or that is very easy to do after you're watching a documentary and have seen news reports that tell you everything that has happened already.
I survived the 04 tsunami. I do a lot of travelling, and I always travel with a bug out bag. People used to call me paranoid. I was having breakfast with my girlfriend right by the water. I noticed two of the restaurant workers looking out towards the sea and talking nervously. I asked what's wrong and they said the water receeded a lot and that it might mean a tsunami. We ran to our room, grabbed our bug out bag and headed inland on our rented moped. I remember seeing everybody go about their day normally and thinking I was overreacting. After travelling to a high ground point overlooking the ocean we sat for about 15 MIN. She started getting upset with me, calling me crazy. Long story short my survivalist and always Prepared mindset saved our lives.
I will NEVER travel without my BOB. And I always think of plans of action for SHTF scenarios when travelling. Naturally, going on vacation, one wants to relax and be carefree. But the word is a crazy crazy place. I'm very adventurous and travel to many exotic locations, and have been in some scenarios where others less prepared may have had found themselves in a bad situation. The 04 tsunami was a perfect example. As it turns out, its the little things in my BOB, that people think I'm crazy for carrying when I travel, that made a difference on that day. First aid kit, toilet paper, water purification tablets, my girlfriends tampons, a multi tool. These thing came in extremely handy and in that scenario turned out to be a luxury more than a convenience. Long story short, when travelling far from home, hope for the best.. and prepare for the worst. Also, and overlooked factor for those who like to travel a lot, it's always beneficial to be in food health and relatively fit
+Usagi Felton I agree with you in a way, but still... it's frustrating to see that some people completely ignore the authorities shouting out for immediate evacuation, or slowly walk away, taking their time... I mean, if the people responsible for public safety, are shouting out "get the hell out of here, NOW", why on earth would you not take it seriously? Also, this region of Japan has been very hard struck by tsunamis many times through history and is the most affected area of Japan - one would think that history would be a big fat warning sign for ignoring the possible severity of a tsunami. Even a small scale one can cause a lot of destruction and can pose a threat for human life just by it's sheer force, even if it isn't a high one. The fact that all these are towns depending on the ocean for their livelihood makes it even harder to comprehend why so many people were so slow in reacting. If this would have been the first tsunami to strike the area, of course no one would have been able to predict the devastation, but seeing to the fact that it wasn't, I think it's strange. I can't say that I would have been cool and composed and done everything right in the situation but I have lot of respect for the forces of nature and I kind of see it as common sense to be aware of the habitat one lives in and its risks. I knew what tsunamis were and how earthquakes can cause them, when I was in middle school. Basic geography lessons in school. So how can these people not respect something they know has this kind of immense destructive force? Better safe than sorry - a jog to the hills for nothing, is better than drowning or getting smashed to pieces in that rubble. Also, if authority officials tell me to run - I run. Because they wouldn't, if the danger wasn't real. Humans have a pretty bad modern habit of lulling themselves into false security and think; "it won't happen to me". We seem to have lost our basic instincts in a way. Something that kinda illustrates this well is the fact that almost none of the aboriginal people of the Andaman and Nicobar islands were killed in the 2004 boxing day tsunami, while thousands of the "modern" inhabitants, were.
I can’t imagine these people worrying about their children and family members and there was not a thing they could do. My gosh that has to be a terrible feeling.
Philippines just had a big earthquake today in its capital city. Just like Japan we are a group of islands. Whats scary is that, we dont have the technology, neither evac plans. Its sad how people died in this situation :( imagine being on top of the hill hoping for your family to be alive.
WATCHING THIS DOCUMENTARY TODAY IN HOPES OF LEARNING FROM IT. BECAUSE OF THE PAST EARTHQUAKES IN WHICH I LIVE NEARBY ITS EPICENTER AND KNOWING OUR PLACE IS VERY NEAR THE OCEANS.
I can't stop crying; the loss and injuries of family, friends, homes, your town, way of life - everything, and the pain. I have been watching videos of the tsunami, but, couldn't make out what was where; but this film is beautiful and tells the story of the strength and goodness of these people. I am grateful this film was made, and the courage of all those who made videos in the midst of such fear, and for those who produced this film so we can see the tragedy and strength.
God bless all of the survivors of the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and may the victims rest in peace. These people went through so much and I'm sure are still suffering to this day in 2019, but when tragic disasters like this occur, you have no choice but to pick up the pieces and start anew. The firefighter Yuichi Owada mentioned that so many people died because he ran and that he will live with that for the rest of his life, but he didn't think about the people that he did help to safety that day. People who are alive today because he helped them evacuate. Then, another man mentioned about seeing a firefighter who had been caught in the tsunami and lost the struggle where his house should've been, God rest his soul, but Yuichi is alive today because he ran. My view on it is it's better to be alive than to be dead, because if you're here today you can help educate children and people that weren't around then or haven't been forced to deal with something like he witnessed. He can also help rebuild the town and help more people that have been left homeless and helpless by this horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to everyone alive and dead that were affected by this horrific tragedy.
YES OUR GOD IS A GOOD GOD❣ THE CREATOR OF HEAVEN & EARTH, EVERYONE & EVERYTHING.... ALL PRAISES GO TO THE HEAVENLY FATHER JEHOVAH ALMIGHTY GOD TRUST IN HIM, DEATH HAS NO STING... The dignity and resilience of these people is astounding. My heart goes out to them. I cannot begin to imagine the horror of this experience and the dreadful aftermath. It was like watching the end of the world. Their world.
That guy in the car is so lucky to be alive after all those decisions he made. And note- if you don't know which way is up underwater, let a tiny bit of air out to feel where the bubbles go. If you don't know which way is up when stuck under snow, you spit. Spit goes down, bubbles go up, no matter what crazy position your body is in.

@@radhasen.animalwelfare.5644 Yeah, survivors guilt, how someone can misinterpret that hurtful words, probably he felt responsibility because he realized what was going on and he couldn't do more than help voicing the danger and run for his own life as anyone would do. That most to be a terrible thought/image to carry all the life, maybe even if he could help more the feeling of not helping all the rest still would be there by the nature of the event

From 16 i dreamt of tsunamis a couple of times a week leading up to the Indonesian tsunami. After that the dreams stopped for awhile then started again, then the Japanese tsunami happened. I still have the dreams every couple of months now but no where near as much as before.

Oh Honey. You have your beautiful sons and are blessed. I'm sorry for your losses and the fear you experienced. You survived and are strong.
I’m glad you were able to save your children.
Gary Wheeler do most tsunamis not go to far inland?
Tsunamis usually come in 4 or 5 waves each one more destructive than the other
That's the worst part. When people go to an evacuation center and think they're ok, but then still get swept away. That's just so horrible.
I think it shows that we really can’t take Mother Nature for Granted
Some buildings that has hundreds of evacuees left with no survivors at all and some with hundreds of evacuees left with only few survivors to live to tell the tail.
for those wondering why there were still so many people driving their cars in the documentary NOVA:Surviving the Tsunami a woman explains that in her car she could not hear the emergency warnings to evacuate at all
Incredible foresight by that elderly man, warning of a tsunami before the quake was even over. Probably bought some people precious time.
Staying alive song
Yes, i agree. He remembered how it was during the Chile earthquake.
@@randycarey7487 i would say he was smarter than all those hanging out and taking pictures of the water or driving around...i give him credit
@Gayle Elizabeth I think you miss the part when he say that "Most people was already inside emergency centers" and that "I was telling people to evacuate through the loud speaker" the reason that he was at the levee was because most people has already been evacuated so he come there to check the water while warning the few people who remain.

That was hard. My mind kept going back that she had good warning and some kind soul stopped for her and all the babies. Bless her heart.
its sad seeing the firefighter guy suffer over feeling responsible for those lives. he should not attempt to claim that responsibility. he went above and beyond staying that long, and there was no shame in finally turning and running to save himself at that point. he stayed to the last minute trying to get people to rush out of there, trying to save people who clearly were not taking the situation seriously enough. ultimately those lives were beyond his reach and only nature could claim the responsibility for their deaths. eventually youve got to look out for your own welfare. he waited til such a point that to delay any further for someone else's sake would have just cost both their lives.
That firefighter put himself at very great risk, and in doing so he saved many lives. He stayed until the very last moment, calling out the warning and instructing people where to go. I hope he can give himself peace, and a reward, for saving so many lives.
Yeah it's hard to see how that weight continues to pull at him. I really want to just give him a hug.

As a family we cried for people we knew were going to lose their lives...those on foot running with the tsunami close behind, those in cars floating away. It was terrible to watch but hoped our will power would miraculously help in some way. To the fire truck driver....your guilt is because you care but you should not carry this burden. Survivor's guilt.

@Voracious Reader Whoa there, that's not what I meant. The guy was basically told, "you are a replacement child," and I think that would be hard to live with. Why bother to tell him that? By the way, I have also suffered quite a bit, but that's neither here nor there.
Very sad
Yes, I know what you mean. There was a time when individual feelings were not overmuch considered and many hurtful things were said in daily conversation. There are still some Northern European cultures which seem to maintain truth overshadows consideration even when it's not important. Germany, UK, Holland and other parts of Scandinavia come to mind. It's a level of human development and there is no compassion without empathy.
Hey, at least you got here
Thank you for translating.

If I recall, that dude actually died.
@ landseer lover.... Wonderful end to a tragic event. Congrats 🇦🇺
Sorry to hear that
Glad your mother is safe during the quake.

If a calamity occurs in a city has not the LORD done it"
Proverbs 1:24-31 “Because I called and you refuse, I stretched out My hand and no one paid attention; And you neglected all My counsel And did not want My reproof; I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.

Sacrificing themselves for people to know that there's a tsunami coming. Damn my heart hurts.
So sad...even after all this time, my heart still breaks for these people.

This is really scary. Florida is all flatlands, no mountains and no hills. A peninsula; that, if this were to happen on the East Coast, in the Atlantic Ocean, to the same extent as it did in the Pacific, there would be little to no chance of survival.

Just Browsing Florida may be flat, but I've not heard of any fault lines even remotely close to Florida.
A far greater risk and more frightening prospect is the Cascadia fault just off Washington's and Oregon's coast. It has a history of huge quakes and like Japan's fault line, Cascadia's is the worst kind of fault - a 'subduction' fault. Based on the geologic record, it is overdue and millions live in nearby coastal towns, especially Seattle

I know I can't even imagine something like that. She cared so much about the people of her town trying to run away, but she just couldn't do anything but scream and hope for their safety.
For me, that is the most horrifying scene in the video.
Me too horrifying.
Noah Stone THANK GOD YOU'RE ALIVE
+Damar Alexander praise him
I can’t imagine these people worrying about their children and family members and there was not a thing they could do. My gosh that has to be a terrible feeling.

I am grateful this film was made, and the courage of all those who made videos in the midst of such fear, and for those who produced this film so we can see the tragedy and strength.
It's upsetting to hear the clear warnings and see so many people staying to watch. They didn't realise the danger until it was too late.
Your so called god allows this to happen, then gets praise!! I'll say no more!

@@sweetwildangel1 No God thanks. he wasnt there that day,
The dignity and resilience of these people is astounding.
If you can open your eyes, or have enough light to see,.. Or the water calm enough to not wash away the bubbles
That was beautifully and respectfully done. Thank you for sharing it
So sad I'm crying
One of my colleague was in our company main office in Tokyo the day of the earthquake. He is still having nightmare about it. Our company even changed our policy regarding worker coming temporarily from outside Japan to adapt to this kind of this situation.
21:51 is so sad. Imagine the fear they are going through at that precise moment :(
Cambodian love you Japanese.
Cambodian cried when you are suffering.
🇯🇵 even after almost 8 years, it seems surreal...
Watching on the 8th Anniversary of this tragic event. 3/11/19
Just Browsing Very sad
I'm a german, my English is not the best, sorry
Imagine, if this had happened in nighttime, it would have been much more incredibly worse!!
I say your English is great for someone who thinks they aren’t good at speaking English
ask the chileans that. they had it happen to them at 3;30 am
@@josiahknapp7198 It's true I am chilean and was hideous.
@@josiahknapp7198 so so sorry FOR PEOPLE, who ALREADY have SO little. Where are the Clinton's, WHEN they are really needed.? ...REMEMBER ALL THE MONEY SENT TO..HAITI. WE ARE THE WORLD, WE ARE THE PEOPLE.......
Karin Groszeibl They never apologized for the millions of people they killed in ww2 .from all the Otrozaties they committed to war crimes against humanity to the UNITE 721 from kids to entires families killed .to this day they lie about their history to their kids .I know it’s not the same generation but I think this was gods punishment from the earth quack to the tsunami to the nuclear plant that to this day is giving them really bad problems . I love Japanese culture but like I said , it just feels like a punishment from the creator . and not that they are the same gen or the USA DONT have blood on our hand eight but they forced us to used those dame weapons because they worshiped a false idol their emporer they were going to make the USA fight a war that was going to cost millions of lives .war is bad hopefully we don’t have to experience anything like that again and I pray for all of u ..
"I let children die...I let elderly die"
Poor thing you didn't "let" anyone die... just as you are not the almighty picking and choosing who lives you could not choose who died... I know you do not think this way because you believe you are the all powerful one therefore you can not think like that period. May you find peace in knowing you are not more powerful then nature's destruction
Dawn break
I believe those words came from a heart full of sorrow and not from any belief he is the almighty one!
There's an emotion termed" survivor's guilt" and that is what he is suffering from. - poor man.
Not from any delusion that he is God.
DAWN BREAK MAY U FIND PEACE THAT U NEED, I WILL PRAY FOR U TO FIND COMFORT THAT U NEED. WITH LOVE FROM TEXAS DONNA M. OZMUN.
I wonder why 162 people clicked "didn't like". What the hell were they especting?.... IDIOTS!
My sincere condolences to all the people from Japan who lost their loved ones, families, neighbours and and their homes. Be blessed!
Im hoping its because they feel weird liking a doc about so much death. Maybe their dislike was about the situation and not the doc it self
Because it's 240 pixels.
@Judy G. All I did was explain why it has downvotes. I didn't judge or criticise anyone. And you start your reply with "FU".
I thumbed up the video but it feels kind of sick “liking” a video where so many people died. The people who disliked the video might have felt it was more respectful to dislike the video instead of liking it or not responding.
In the end, we are all human and at the core want the same thing - peace and life!
You think?
What is life? It's a breath that appears for a little while .
Very dignified people. My prayers go to them.
I agree +cizia69 my prayers go with them of 2011 tsunami in japan plus they had an earthquake, AND it's was rated 9.0
Isabelle Goomba my prayers go to them first. and my prayers are better than yours. ps I am a troll with no friends and really don't mean it.
If I had enough money to repay all the damage I would.
My prayers go to them also.
Prayers are meaningless. If you want to make a difference, donate some money, go and help or whatever, but don't sit in your comfy homes and pray and think that you've made a difference.
boy-fj yes your highness. does this mean you like men? would you say you were homosexual. that's fine, I don't mind.
