Hey! So I have actually left that office and went to launch a new office in a different specialty so I am not longer in this position. However, when I was yes I did more than a normal receptionist. I did the basic functions of front. I prepared surgical paperwork, I helped create documents to use for the office, I created guides for the girls, as well as meet and interview potential employees :) I was also the main trainer for new front desk employee
Hi I’m currently in MA school as of right now and I finish in March. I’m currently looking for a job because I don’t want it to get to late and have to risk waiting a while after being certified. I’m looking into medical receptioning just for now so that way I can start the clinical part,around where I live they call it a front desk assistant which is basically MAA. I’m interested but I’m nervous about my communication skills. How did you overcome the fear of talking on the phone with patients and also dealing with patients at the front desk. I feel like I can do it but I might just be overthinking it lol. But I just know imma get nervous and start stuttering not knowing what to say and what’s the easiest part.
Congrats on school! I honestly talk to them like we know each other on the outside (but I’m still respectful) honestly the front is all about building a relationship with them. I pull something off their ppwk and use that , I compliment them on something they are wearing etc. that breaks down the formal of it all. I’m confident even if I’m not 100% sure of the answer. I treat them like they are the most important person who stepped into the office. And it’s easy from there. I had patients coming back to thank me or check on me and when they came back I’d check on their family..ask how their trip went if they mentioned it last time..etc. you get comfortable (especially on the phone) as you go. Just be nice, don’t be afraid to use hold, and don’t be afraid to say let me find that information (if you don’t know) and call them back! My biggest tip when I train front desk girls is treat them how you would expect to be treated if you went into a office. It’s nice to hear a compliment (you never know if they aren’t having the greatest day and that compliment might cheer them up) don’t take it personal when they yell at you…and they will….and admit your mistakes (because you will make them) and keep going.
Actually we don’t sit as much as you think. We handle office deliveries, we often have to go to the back to communicate with medical staff/doctors and a times help with patients in the waiting room and in the back! I will say I hit about 7k steps before I left work (per my Apple Watch lol) . Which crazy …
