    My Elac DBR62 Reference speakers after two years breaking in, play down to 34.16 htz, best I could measure. I can feel the bass at 28 htz. The amp is class D with tube preamp, about 60 wpc clean power, 100 wpc max into 4 ohm. No sub on my system. Shakes the couch with out one, so Elac got clear, deep bass right. Being older I only hear to maybe 15khz, but still know what a real cymbal sounds like. Elacs sound real to me. Some power with tubes helps all speakers. I like the dark version. I like the sound more. Thanks for the review.

      @@NemoPropaganda Yes a very good setup. Even had to pad some cabinets in next room... Buzz sometimes. The speakers and screen are at 30 degrees out from the front wall. Listening area is parallel to that. Speakers are angled up, cross streamed, aimed at angled walls. Reducing standing waves propagates bass very well, apparently! Great surround effects with just two speakers.

    ***Clarifications***
    When I said these sound good on budget gear keep in mind "budget gear" to me is still an amp with a quality transformer and output section like the Emotiva TA1 or Emotiva PA paired with their A2 power amp. Ultra budget amps like the Yamaha RS202 with 40hz-20khz wattage ratings will not be ideal for this speaker.

    Man… It’s really cool when you review a speaker you really love! Your voice inflection changes, (joyful), bigger smiles, and kinda excited to tell us what you felt and heard. Honestly, before watching this review, my “preliminary” and inexperienced opinion of this speaker was that it was not for me. But the way you described 1) it’s universal compatibility; and 2) your very specific and careful description of the top end detail, (unwillingness to characterize as “smooth” treble), truly made me stop and rethink. Great review bro. 💪🏽🔥🎶

    I'm glad you got in a pair of Elac's, based on your preferences in other videos I thought you'd be happy with their overall sound signature. I find in general they do mid-range very well, as you've said. I've been enjoying my B6.2's for quite some time now - and since adding the SVS SB-1000 it's just really a great sounding setup. As another commenter has mentioned, I think you should try to audition a pair of the new Elac UB52's, might be interesting. Great review man.

      @@NemoPropaganda So the thing is the DBR62 is CAD $699 and the UB52 is $799. I have heard some prefer the DBR62 over the Unifi. Amir at AudioScienceReview is very picky. He measured the DBR62, and subjectively listened to them. He loved them. So you might just have the better speaker already. Amir says this: "The ELAC DBR-62 objectively and subjectively meets and exceeds my expectations. It is "Andrew Jones" as I expected but had been missing up to now. It is "high-end" sound on a budget with little to apologize for. I was sad to stop listening to it to type this review! It is that good." If you ever do try the UB52 it would be an interesting comparison.

    Bought these for my daughter, of course I had to try them out. They sounded excellent; I was very impressed. Defiantly need a sub in any decent size room though. I bought her a $200 SMSL A300 integrated to run them. She can upgrade the back end at her discretion. The thing actually sounds really nice, lots of power and driver control, plus it has a dac so she can run it off her computer. Anyway, back to the speakers. I got her the white ones. I think they got a lot wrapped up in box build and woofers (they are cast which is nice to see). The wrap isn't beautiful but seams resilient and the face is really nice. I usually don't like white speakers and such, too Ikea looking. Andrew Jones said in a video about these that the tweeter screen is designed that way for acoustic reasons. I'm not sure if it was to act as a wave guide or just designed to not interfere with the tweeter. I didn't take them off to see if they got brighter without them. I got them for $450 open box, they were in perfect shape. I would recommend. The only complaint I have is I was kind of lead to believe they were made in Germany, everything I saw kind of hinted at it, especially the price tag. But no, China. Not a huge deal, either way not made in USA. To be fair I didn't look into it that deeply. I still love them and would recommend them in a heartbeat. Especially for a smaller living room or bedroom size setup.

    Good review. Honestly though. I didn't like them. I sent them back, and was happy to pay $65 shipping to do so too. No drive with rock and roll. My 5 inch Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary speakers have better bass, better drive, and play louder. Unfortunately they don't play good at low level, and need more on the top. But so don't these IMHO. And like you. I wasn't a big fan of the mid bass bump on these either. Some speakers I don't mind it. These I did.
    But really in the end. What it was that did them in the most was their lack of musicality, and fun factor. They just bored me to death. I replaced them with a pair of used Buchardt S300 MKII SE's ($700 w/ stands), and was going to do a comparison before I sent them back, but after a couple of weeks with the Buchardts. There was nothing to compare. And they just went back.
    Now I know the Buchardts are more expensive, but I own over a dozen pairs of speakers, and there's only maybe four, or five pair that I would put aside for these. The Wharfedales are way better IMHO. And they're less money. As are multiple pairs of under $200 (and some even under $50) vintage speakers I own. My ADS L520, KLH Model Thirty Three, N.E.A.R. 15M, large Advent 5012, Canton Quinto 540, Klipsch RF3, and even my Pinnacle PN8+/Cerwin Vega VS-150's are all more toe tappers. And all would be kept over the Elacs. I just didn't want to listen to my system with them. And I tried many hardware combinations too. Nothing helped. And yes I broke them in. Played them for weeks on end.
    I will say though. That's my opinion, and if you like them. I sincerely hope you enjoy the heck out of them. Everything you said is true. They are technically amazing. Just don't do it for me subjectively.
    But do yourself a huge favor, and get the white. It was the only reason I didn't want to send them back. They're GORGEOUS!!!
    BTW I got them from Music Direct for $510 all in. They were open box. And they come up very often. There wasn't a mark on mine at all, and you couldn't tell they weren't brand new at all.
    Thanks for another great review my man. And thanks to the gentleman who loaned them to you also. That was very nice of him. Wish I lived near you. I would loan you the Wharfedale, and the Buchardts to review. It would be interesting to hear your take on them. ✌️

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 года назад +3

      Hey Scott, I've been wondering lately if some of us experience that "toe tapping" differently. Like for me this totally gave me that but other people say these don't have any "flavor". Maybe our brains just pick up on some of the other metrics more and some less. Like maybe my brain focuses more on imaging/staging and someone else's brain might naturally focus more on tonality and transients. One day i think science will help us understand this sort of thing better but for now all i can do is guess :) I was seriously surprised that i loved these so much as most of the reviewers seemed to think they were technically excellent but missing the musicality a touch.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  Год назад

      while I do use my stereo for movies & games also I generally keep the volume pretty low so I couldn't tell you how these would perform in a theater at reference levels but I would not be surprised if they started to fall apart a bit. They're harder to drive cheap drivers in a really nice cabinet so they need a lot of power to play loud but can't handle too much power either so not really ideal for a theater setting IMO. It's a fine speaker for music don't get me wrong, music rarely has the peaks that theater does but I feel like at this point the DBR62 has been dethroned by better speakers around the same price like Heco Aurora 300 though some may feel that's too dark up top for theater use.

Question for you - I see you are also a fan and long-time owner of some Buchardt S400s. I get that these two don't really compete price-wise, but for some reason (marketing? hype?) I'm really curious about the Buchardts. Aside from the improved bass extension of the S400s, do you find them to be a drastic or notable improvement in other metrics over the Elacs? If you were happy with the Elacs would you pony up the extra $$ for the Buchardts??

    • @NemoPropaganda

      mmmm, I think going from DBR62 to elac would be disappointing for some people. The Elac has a more well defined mid bass region and a more flushed out and textured midrange. Those are two characteristics I find myself missing a bit when I switched back to the S400. However the S400 has loads more extension, a much fuller sound overall, and a much more refined top end and sound overall. I think for anyone who likes the DBR62 they should just keep it and not look at any other speaker lol, your only upgrade should be amplifiers as they need a good bit of power.

      Hey Russel, It depends on the floor standers in question and subwoofer. $400 subwoofers aren't the quickest usually so the $1200 floor stander might sound better to someone who likes speed. But if the person prefers bass quantity they may prefer the book/sub setup more. There are some faster $400 subwoofers but then they don't have a lot of low end extension, then again neither do $1200 towers. It's a hard question to answer at the end of the day and i think it could go either way depending on the person :)

      The Emotiva is a great buy at $229 and i still love them! The Emotiva will be less fussy with other components where as to get the most out of the Elac you want at minimum quality power like Emotiva or IotaVX amps. The Emotiva Image very well also but the Elac has better driver integration and refinement but that comes at 2.6 times the price. Cheaper products will almost always have a higher value proposition so it's hard to compare the two from a perspective of value. If money is tight grab the emotivas. They're really good!

      @NemoPropaganda  3 года назад +1

      At $990 for the Chora 806 it's important to remember it is 50% more expensive than the Elac but with that said the Elac will have a tonally richer and more pronounced midrange, stronger midbass focus and tighter lower bass punch. The Chora 806 will have much more detail on the top end with a much more open and airy presentation with a touch more refinement. While the elac needs some power the chora is very easy to drive. While both are a touch on the forward side of neutral the extra detail of the Chora may give the illusion that it is brighter but I feel the two are about even in terms of their forward nature. At the end of the day both speakers are fantastic but they have different flavors. The Elac is the warmer of the two and the Focal is the more analytical of the two. I enjoy both of them very much but one last thing. I would suggest the Chora for lower volume listeners (65-75db) that like an open sound and the Elac for listeners who have some power and listen louder (85+db).

    Interesting review. What I find fascinating as well as puzzling is what happened to the bass in the B6.2 and, evidently, in the Reference line? I have some B6.2 and most say the Reference is a somewhat upgraded version of that sound signature that tilts it back to a warmer presentation. Which is good, because I do not find the 6.2s to be warm. I also find the 6.2 bass adequate, but nothing to write home about. However, I recently picked up the original B6 and holy cow, the BASS! The bass, the bass, it's all about the bass? What!!! OK, the bass isn't that audiophile bass that is wrapped so tight it can't take a dump, lol. A bass that is so clinical that you just want to add the SUB immediately and start CRANKING it! Audiophile bass is somewhat laughable, IMO. You don't want to use a SUB? Get yourself some Debut B6s and stand back. OK, the highs are not as prominent or detailed as its successors, BUT, oh the BASS! See what I mean. I haven't heard ONE reviewer say OH THE BASS about either the B6.2s or the Reference model. So what's up with that? Can't make an audiophile bookie with bass kick. Gotta give that up to sound audiophile, lol. Someone give me a beer! Did I mention the BASS? This bookshelf puts out usable bass in the mid 30hz zone! WHAT! How is that even possible? I guess it's not because if you want to CLEAN IT UP you have to LOSE IT!

      ahahaha, long but funny read... So the DBR62 has excellent bass, just the quantity is low. If you give a booky tons of ass it generally will muck up the midrange and top end. Getting it to have a ton of bass without those downsides cost dollars unfortunately :(. The Reference is one of my favs though!

      I've listened to all three pretty extensively - the B6, B6.2 and I now have the Reference. My Dad bought the B6 on a wim years back and when I heard it I couldn't believe that it had more bass than my 8" powered Yamaha monitors. Fast forward a year or two, and I bought the B6.2 hoping it was a refinement of that original sound. To my disappointment it was a completely different speaker. Anemic bass and harsh mids/highs, although yes, more detail, more audiophile but less musical, less fun. Bummer. I grabbed a pair of the references after reading all of the reviews on the audioscience forums. I would say it really is sort of a mashup of the 6.0's bass and the 6.2's detail, with a dash of additional warmth or smoothness in the mids and overall sound. In my room, the bass is comparable to the originals, if ever so slightly less prominent, and can get visceral with some volume. At around 65-70db and higher they will produce bass you can feel in your chest and will physically resonate my couch and floors. It's not like having a good sub - but it's a lot more muscular than the 6.2s.

    Nice review i need a new pair of bookshelf speakers, im just not feeling my elac b6.2, any recommendations for edm and hip hop would be great. (around 500 to 600) im affraid the dbr62 will be a bit similar than the b6.2.

      How about the Monitor Audio Bronze 100 6G? It's got an 8" driver so will have better extension for EDM, I'm selling my pair if you're lookin for a deal. I'm actually selling a ton of stuff if you're in the US, I have too much gear now.

    I'm glad that I came across this review. People have been suggesting these speakers to me. Do you feel these would be good for someone that listens to EDM with an emphasis on DnB. Unfortunately the 2 amps you recommend in your forst comment are unavailable.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 года назад

      Hey Jason, I listen to a lot of EDM and yes these are awesome with that, the midrange richness really helps bring some emotion to the female vocals in songs like Play by Alan Walker or male vocals even like in Choir also by Alan Walker & Guy Sebastian. You do need an amplifier with an honest power rating of at least 50w RMS or more like the Emotiva TA1 and more power is better.

    I have to laugh. I just watched a review where they said these were bad on female voices. You stated all the details exactly opposite. I’m wondering which you prefer between the Klipsch RP-600M.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 года назад +1

      The treble of the DBR62 can be sibilant when paired with brighter components, or if they are simply toed in too much or even if the room is not ideal which i would imagine would make female vocals unenjoyable. As with all things system setup and overall synergy is very important. I spend about 30+ days minimum with products before I review them so i really have the luxury of trying out different things and my pre/power equipment is a touch on the smoother side which could have also helped mitigate that however most reviewers agree the midrange on the dbr62 is wonderful :). Unfortunately I have not heard the RP600M but most reviewers rate it below the DBR62.

      Hey....I bought both. The Elacs are good for some things like acoustic guitars and male voices...The Klipsch are a little more lively, great for female vocals...I swap em out.
