you don't just play it you have fantastic ornaments that make it unique. I'd listen to the same by Barney McKenna and it sounds completely different. No disrespect to him he was one of the greatest, rip. Yours sounds better. Theres something unmistakably you in this rendition, in your playing altogether
Thanks for this amazing compliment. Barney is my Dads favourite player. I grew up listening to Barney and was lucky enough o see him perform. If I had to chose, mine would be Gerry O Connor.
Yeah you may prefer Gerry O'Connor as he's more modern and perhaps progressive but I prefer Barney's playing as its more firmly rooted in the past. But then when the Dubliners' started or the Ronnie Drew group they probably said the same about him. Your playing is amazing but maybe after 30 years I'll be close to that. I've started on the Online Academy of Irish Music and can just about play the Kerry Polka, otherwise known as Egans Polka. Maybe you have some tips? Still learning to tune my banjo is heard to get it sounding absolutely perfect even with the tuner. Do you remember when you started to sound good? What I love about your playing is it sounds old but you have a unique imprint on it. you have the Shane Farrell imprint. When you get famous and you start selling your music thats what people will say

Well, he is a great player, but I find his playing a little lacking in feeling. Too mechanical, I would say.
You’re wrong in my opinion. Reels often get their ‘feel’ from when in session with other musicians. This is excellent technique with the instrument, the clarity of the notes, the triplets - given a folk session this kind of technique is what allows the ‘feel’ to flourish.
