I think we need the help of Sinistea's great grandfather Fearsome Flagon, another Ground type with the ability Protosynthesis and the move Half Empty, which is rumored to move all hazards on your side to the opponent's side, and instantly KOs the opponent, but only works below half HP, otherwise it only acts as Endure, again allegedly. Who knows what it really does? I also heard he was a war hero back in the day. Given how old he is, he might need the herba mystica?

    I’m not just talking battle-wise, either (they deserve to be Water/Dragon and get Recover, just throwing it out there). In X and Y, where they debuted, you could only get it right before the Fairy gym. In Sun, Moon, and the Ultra games, you could only get them through SOS chaining in the rain. Then they were exclusive to Shield and you could only get them then in the late-game (again, only in the rain). Who at GameFreak caught a grudge for a slug?

    Jim has said this a bunch of times before, mostly on the Dragapult video, but to him "interesting and nuance" for a pokemon's stat design is basically "subvert expectations of how this pokemon would be used by giving it's stronger attacking stat the weaker movepool and the weaker one a ton of options". That and it does more than just click stab moves while having a bunch of sets.

    • @mr.sandman7339
      @mr.sandman7339 Год назад +4

      I do like how most of the Pseudos can be used as mixed attackers to some extent since it allows for more variety. Like ice beam Dragonite/Ttar, Salamence obviously, Draco Chomp, Superpower Hydreigon, EQ Goodra, even Grass Knot/HP Fire Metagross in some metas. Dragapult and Kommo-o are the kings of this, imo since I've seen them use physical or special sets pretty equally.
      As much as I like Baxcalibur and enjoy sweeping with it, there isn't much to explore with it bc it's very clear that it's supposed to come in on a fire move and use physical STAB moves (or EQ) every time. It can Freeze Dry but it's weaker than using a STAB move anyway bc of how strong its physical moves are and the gap between its attack and Sp.attack. The only decision is whether to run DD, SD, or banded.

    • @mr.sandman7339
      @mr.sandman7339 Год назад +7

      I feel like after a certain point, they started overtuning and optimizing mons to make it very obvious how they're supposed to be played (in this gen especially, but Volc Quiver Dancing was a good example he brought up from gen 5).
      Like how Chi-Yu and Chien-Pao were clearly specifically made to do nothing except spam their special and physical STAB moves, respectively, bc of their abilities. Even non-legends like Espathra and Annihilape basically having one set each that got them banned bc they received such powerful combinations of traits. Or how the starters this gen all got amazing signature moves (with no drawbacks) that typically outclass any other STAB move they have while still having great coverage, abilities, and stat distributions.
      Not that we didn't have mons like this before, but the power creep is super obvious this gen because so many mons are like this now. I feel like they would usually give mons actual limitations in previous gens, give them multiple ways to be used, or at least make it less obvious what the optimal sets would be.

    you talking about the many sets the Ttar can run made me realize, Gen 9 has 5 new Pokemon (not counting Hisui yet) that can run more than 2 viable sets: Meowscarada, Dudunsparce, Gholdengo, Great Tusk and Iron Valiant.
    With Dudun being the only one that can run different playstyles (bulky sweeper [both physical or special], specs, hazard, paraflinch, phaser and more)
    All the other ones might change a coverage move or two, but basically play the same. A lot of them don't have a good movepool to run any other set, and even the some that do, will just run their best set.

    • @mr.sandman7339
      @mr.sandman7339 Год назад +7

      Over the course of the video I realized how most of the Pseudos can run several different sets or at least have done so throughout their history. Older Pseudos definitely, and Hydreigon got a lot of mileage out of Nasty Plot. Goodra can play around with different items and moves to hit what it needs to. In the limited time it was usable outside of Nat Dex, Kommo-o went through about 1000 different sets bc it got almost every relevant set up move in the game. Pult has at least 3-4 viable sets.
      Unfortunately, as satisfying as a Baxcalibur sweep can be, it's very clear that it's supposed to come in on a fire move and muscle through the opponent with physical STAB moves (or EQ) every time. The only decision is whether you want to run DD, SD, or banded. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

    Goodra is slept on. It's a cool bulky setup mon that can function as a curse/acid armor win con, as a acid spray wall breaker, or just a AV attacker or special tank (it requires little ev investment to be a special tank anyway without av). Something like curse, dragon claw/tail, eq, firepunch. Or acid spray, draco/dragon pulse, with two filler special coverage moves. Its two big weaknesses are mediocre turn 1 defense without setup or heavy investment & no non-item way to boost its speed.
    As far as aesthetics go, its line is very good. It combines one of the most easily recognized enemy types; the slimes with another popular fictional creature known as a dragon 🐉. Slimes are usually some of the weakest enemy rpg enemies you fight (goomy's pokedex entries usually refer to it as the weakest dragon type), but dragons are usually tough to either kill or occupy strong enemy types. Having its aesthetic be land slug-like (or snail-like with hisui goodra) with the feelers while having a cute draconic touch is a very stark contrast to some of the more gruff looking pseudo-legendaries.
    Hydration & sap sipper are acceptable abilities & have their place. Gooey is very niche & should have gotten a buff to make it into some kind of unique status effect + stat drop that results in a stage 1 speed drop for 3-4 turns if contact is made. The goo dissipates, but the speed drop still persists on the pokemon that made contact even if a switch out occurs.
    Overall, it might be the weakest pseudo for prioritizing bulk & having more situational abilities, but it's no slouch with its unpredictability, great typing, & nice abilities.

    Honestly, in Gen 8 everything you said about DD Salamance applies to Volc as well. You have no Hidden Power, Z-moves, or Tera to break through counters. Heatran and Blissey pretty much invalidate everything Volc can do. It's also easily out-sped at +1 by common threats and kept in check by priority users. It requires a ton of skill in Gen 8 to achieve Volc win conditions. In gen 9 it's easier but still far from trivial.

    The thing with TTar is that in its most prominent generations ( 2nd and 3rd) it is the most competetively viable pokemon available, without being overpowered in almost any way. Theres always an answer to Tyranitar, but at the same time Tyranitar always has an answer to everything else. Its speed limits the strength of its dragon dances, and its typing limits the strength of its defense and hp stats. TTar has a whopping SEVEN weaknesses in the earlier generations, out of 17 total types thats a huge majority, yet its defensively bulky enough to make these weaknesses not game ending for it, unlike some other pokemon ( looking at you Exeggutor). With a gigantic movepool and viability with both physical and special movesets, it always has a place on teams, but not once do you send out TTar in gen 3 and think "well this games over now". This is why I think the gens 1-3 pseudos are so good. They are amazing, but its not game ending for you if they start to suit up either.

    i think what makes these mons so interesting is that they can suffer from "useless stat syndrome" and still be good. But because of that they also get cool niches like mixed attacking and tank sets. A couple go too far maybe like goodra, and gross though, they are both sort of invested in both attack styles, but then hyper invest in a defensive stat and have too many useless stats depending on the set. Dragapult is an example of those two that investing into mixed then dumped a ton into speed, but ofc speed compliments attack stats, and is even good stand alone unlike def which requires hp, ability, and move pool as back up. T-tar is actually the 'worst' of the bunch but gets carried by its ability. sand chip, and sp def boost make it a 650 bst and if sand was calced as his damage in a stats section where mons are ranked based on average damage done per fight he tops the list for most gens im sure.

    You're my guy sir Timothy but your disrespect of kyurem-b shall not go unnoticed. It actually has a reason to be visually incohensive due to it being a fusion, Bax on the other hand looks like a bowling pin with a bunch of random features added on like those goofy red claws over it's actual hands, it looking more like a steel than ice type, and glued on face.
    Now Bax's paradox form on the other hand, gallant glacier, is a truly great design.

    Jimothy, what do you think of the viability of Choice Scarf Tyranitar in Gen 9 OU? With a Hasty Nature and 120 Sp.Atk EVs (if I recall correctly) it can always 2 shot offensive and physically defensive Great Tusk, and can work as an effective lure, as Scarf is so uncommon ppl would not withdraw Tusk, thinking it is faster and staying in for the kill. + it can be given enough speed to outrun Iron Moth, and the remaining points can be invested in attack. Even though it’s not going max, it still is very powerful, Iron Moth and Volcarona have to Tera to escape it, and special variants of Dragapult still have to fear, as it’s still very bulky, and can take an attack, to later retaliate with a Crunch that will KO. Gholdengo is still very much threatened too. Only bulky Kingambit is not 2 Shot by Earthquake, and if it decides to Tera Flying to escape the Ground weakness, it would fall victim to Tyranitar’s Rock Stab

    Goodra is somewhat decent when paired with Assault Vest because of its superb coverage on top of its above average special bulk. This lets you tank special hits even without investment. I feel like not having an outstanding ability that synergizes with this playstyle is what is really holding it back.
    Gooey doesn't really work well with Goodra only having 70 Defense, Hydration is alright but there are much better options available if you want a Pokemon that does well in Rain, and Sap Sipper would be nice on a Water Type but Goodra already resists Grass and thus gaining an Immunity to it doesn't feel that amazing? Also, it's boosts Attack rather than Special Attack which feels bad when Goodra has higher base Special Attack than Attack alongside better Special Attacking moves than Physical ones (besides Earthquake, but at that point just use Garchomp instead?)

    Metagross is my favorite pseudo and I loved using it in gen 6 with Klefki screen support and weakness policy. At the time most people ran the mega Metagross instead, and it was so cool to see the WP set become pretty much standard in gen 8. Love pseudos that aren’t dragons.

    I would have loved to see Goodra get regenerator. Especially the Hisui version.

  • @katelundberg2029
    @katelundberg2029 5 месяцев назад

    I think Goodra is cool in OMs where it can get either a recovery move or regenerator since especially with regenerator it becomes a pretty neat guy who does damage and is bulky. Also with regenerator it's probably my favorite assault vest user because it can both contribute well to how I like to play and be bulky as hell on the special side.
    ... honestly why didn't they give it regenerator? Like give Goomy a recovery move so both Goodra and H-Goodra get it and make Goodra have Regenerator over one of it's abilities, probably hydration so it parallels H-Goodra but honestly Sap Sipper can just go too and make that the one Shell Armor Replaces on H-Goodra so both have Hydration. Now H-Goodra and base Goodra work well as bulky attackers and can recover well while not needing leftovers and there's a reason to use base Goodra over Better Goodra other than some additional weaknesses from the steel type.

    Hydreigon doesn't feel that good to me competitively plus it evolves so late it's impractical in a playthrough of BW...but in name concerns, it's top tier....its name is peak punnage
    Hydra - Drei - Dragon
    Hydra: Greek mythological creature with many heads
    Drei: The number 3 in German, the whole evo line does this, Deino, Zweilous and Hydreigon....so maybe Zweilous should be pronounced like ZVIElous
    Dragon: Because....duh

    Metagross is just based because it is not a basic "look at this dragon" Pokemon. In RSE it is hands down the best Ace Pokemon from a Champion. Probably the most original pseudo-legendary GF has ever done, a Psychic Steel Supercomputer specialized in smashing you at close range.
