    I definitely agree with you that the lolita community maintaining a level of quality is important, I honestly think its something that should be more valued by all fashion communities. Lolitas dont buy new pieces on a whim, they put though and effort into acquiring their clothing, and they treasure and maintain the pieces so they last for a long time. in a better world all consumers would treat their clothing this way, but with the current trend that is fast fashion the idea of treasuring and caring for your wardrobe seems to have completely disappeared

      Kinda hard to spread this ideology when capitalism and consumerism is so widespread and brainwashes people into following a new trend every 3 days

    For Angelic Pretty: A lot of brands have tried to increase their output (in more subtle ways) to keep up with fast fashion and ultra fast fashion. That means designs are faster and simplified, and no one has time for the quality checks you need at each step of the process to make sure it looks good.
    EDIT: Also, clothing companies are scared of raising prices so they’re applying shrinkflation (that is, lower quality) to clothing.

    • @FrillyDisaster
      @FrillyDisaster Год назад +9

      This is a pretty shitty excuse for why angelic pretty’s quality has gone down. Almost everything AP makes sells out so it’s not like they should be afraid to mark up the price, I’m sure angelic pretty has seen how much there 2009 dresses have sold for simply because of being made of burberry and having a cute design. Angelic pretty is just moving to styles more popular in japan right now and marking down the price to keep up with more popular brands in Japan.

    I don't understand why so many people are "hey I find lolita and love that it's high quality dresses and I get that they are pricey....so I want to buy cheap Amazon crap and I want everyone to accept that"
    Wear what you want just don't call it something it's not.
    Also pushing fast fashion low quality options directly hurts the lolita community and we've already seen brands closing

    I feel "ita" as a concept has evolved over time. I feel theres now two different types of ita, one being "likely beginner lolita in low qual/very poorly executed coord" and then the "internet discourse ita" which is more a dubiously self acclaimed lolita with advice that gives ita-worthy advice, takes, etc.
    Either youre physically Ita or youre an Ita at heart.

  • @nyaamix138

    At this point in my life of wearing lolita for almost 25 years the whole ita thing does not bother me very much anymore. I feel like the majority of people buying things that would be considered ita are very young, with little experience or money and that it's kind of a right of passage. Everyone starts somewhere, learns to coord better and curate their own personal style. Of course giving advice and sharing resources is always helpful for new lolitas but when you're just starting out it's understandable to be excited and not get how these particular clothes are not up to standard. if someone really cares about lolita and wants to continue with it for the long term, ita is just a stage.

      All they saw was a picture. If you don't look closely, on the surface it is a design that appeals to people who admire elements of historical styles in theory but not practice. For instance, I bet that dress would be amazing illustrated in a manga. I can see a character in Black Butler wearing something like that and looking fabulous. I don't know if it has to do with "good taste," which is subjective, so much as practicality. That type of froufrou over-the-top costumey stuff is exactly to my "taste" but I would never wear it as an actual outfit. A photoshoot, yes, absolutely.

    • @tamahoshio
      @tamahoshio Год назад +7

      @@yumeironeko fair enough, it is definitely a design that'd fit in much better with some gothy 2000s manga art, and with the right editing could possibly look right as cosplay of said art. However given the context of lolita fashion, it is absolutely not it.

    In terms of fashion, style, etc, wear whatever you want, no one cares.
    In terms of participating in a community, i.e. Lolita, you need to follow standards of quality and standards that maintain the integrity of the community.
    Being a Lolita means being part of something larger than yourself, which requires respecting other people.

While wheelchair is a mobility aid that gives people more freedom and independence, saying "wheelchair bound" makes it sound like a bad thing and like the wheelchair itself is a problem, and overall sounds a lot more negative. No hard feelings, it's a common mistake often done without any malice. I hope my explanation was sufficient

    I think another important factor of why being an ita is bad is also to look out for the ita themself. since these pieces are so cheap but yet often expensive, they can leave a bad taste in the wearer's eyes. lolita can be expensive especially for a begginer who has to start building a wardribe from scratch, and saving up all that just for it to be bad quality sucks.
    i do think its ultimately a rite of passage, we all buy low quality stuff at some point due to our lack of knowledge (mine were awful amazon shoes). but i do think these warnings are important for begginers so they actually get value out of their pieces.

    This year's AP Halloween print is so going in my closet.
    Last year's I was iffy on until I actually had it in my hands, but this year, it's a need.
    But yeah, people like to get indignant whenever we pick their outfits apart and offer advice and then scream at us for gatekeeping, but gatekeeping and critique is what keeps this fashion true to what it is and not some watered-down corporate bullshit like goth and punk have become.
    These dresses are works of art and we should at least make them look good.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 Год назад +5

      I agree with you but "we pick their outfits apart" sounds way more dramatic than it is irl. The online comm is pretty gentle these days, every group has clear rules about concrit so people who wish to avoid it can avoid it unless someone breaks the rules or visits them on their private social media and gives unsolicited concrit there. Both are increasingly rare.
      A lot of people who do ask for concrit rarely get it. Some groups have turned into hugboxes and died because of it. Some groups are slowly turning into hugboxes and the group culture is already making it awkward to give concrit when the poster asks. I would not mind if we turned back the clock a little and concrit became default in all spaces again, people can still opt out by saying they don't want any. I think this would slow down or prevent the hugboxification of some spaces.
      And we definitely need to gatekeep more. Too many creeps (people in our spaces for the wrong reasons) these days and moderators are more hesitant to moderate their groups because of growing concerns of how that will look, and what if they're wrong (some fictional scenario where the guy who looks like a fetishist predator actually isn't), possible consequences if the fictional scenario comes to pass. Also the surge of people who get their info from tiktok, then want to get into more regulated lolita spaces but come in with a "lolita fashion is whatever I think it is" attitude, and demand to be spoonfed on the spot and even giving a link to a guide isn't good enough anymore.
      Give me a time machine, I'm going back to the LJ days.

    • @SLYKM
      @SLYKM Год назад +4

      @@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118it does sound bad to accidentally assume someone is being a fetishist instead of trans, tho I'm sure there are ways to ban people once they become fetish-y, no? Like that's why certain rules would exist.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 Год назад +3

      @@SLYKM if a non f3tishist was assumed to be one it would be bad for all parties involved, it would be a scandal and the whole english speaking online lolita community would hear about it.
      If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's a duck. What we've seen up to now is that some moderators want to give the benefit of the doubt and let the duck in, because they fear that if they are wrong it will be bad for all parties. What we've seen happen though is that after we let the duck in they will either do something seggs/k1nk related without trying to hide it because they think lolita spaces are k1nk friendly or they simply couldn't contain themselves, or they kind of play the long game trying to hide the fact that they are a duck and do things here and there where they think it will not be noticed. For example in private/dms/irl conversations do and say inappropriate things that can be dismissed (by someone who doesn't want to see the bad in them) as misunderstandings, socially awkward behavior or mixed signals/mixed messages. Most of the time though the duck will have a profile or content elsewhere on the web where they are an open and proud duck, saying "I'm a duck and I'm into duck things". Or, and this is not uncommon, they will have been kicked out of another lolita space for doing duck things. Because this is so common it's not actually a huge scandal and doesn't always reach other comms.
      The thing is though, I do not think we should wait until the ducks in our comms do duck things in order to kick them out. Because then the damage is already done.
      Easy solution; if there is any doubt a duck is actually a duck search for the applying duck's other profiles and content online. Look at what other groups the duck is in, it's usually a group related to doing duck things. Then refuse them entry. No more of this "benefit of the doubt" nonsense, it only has ever ended badly one way or another.

      @@Teddy.Terrible Definitely about that guy and multiple guys who are similar to him on r/lolita, and also about guys like him in the fb and discord groups. I hate the r/lolita rule that considers "searching someone's post history in other subs in order to vilify them." harassment because of the way it has been implemented by one or more mods. People have submitted reports to r/lolita mods saying "this guy posts his outfits to these f3tish subreddits, he shouldn't be in r/lolita" and they've been banned by the mods for getting their evidence from the guy's post history.
      One (or more) of the r/lolita mods obviously don't mind having f3tishists in the subreddit. There's been talk for a few years that the mods are sissy f3tishists themselves.
      The more people I hear who are banned from the subreddit for simply wanting it to be a space free from f3tishists, the more I become convinced that the rumors are true.

Hearing you roast/critique prints is always interesting to me because - I have to admit - I see prints that to me look very similar (pink, froofy, whimsical) and hear that one is obviously inferior to the other. Like with the comic toys print - is it not good just because it's too busy? or is it because nothing breaks up the busyness, like solid panels of colors elsewhere. Or is it the nature of the art itself (the comic book paneling being antithesis to the style/print too washed out looking/characters in comic looking bland). I don't like the neckline of it, but that's all I really noticed.
    I liked the breakdown of ita since it gave me more insight into why certain things are considered not great in the community.
