Megadeth's most overlooked track

  • Is Megadeth's most overlooked track, "Lucretia?" We hear a lot about Dave Mustaine's epic tracks like, "Tornado Of Souls", "Holy Wars" and "Hanger 18." But Lucretia is a deep cut that shouldn't be ignored. It has some incredible licks and riffs that use cool ideas like modal interchange and odd time signatures. Is this proof he's a better song writer than Metallica's James Hetfield? Grab a copy of my music theory course below to get on Dave Mustaine's level.

I bought the sheet music/tabs to the album. Learned it all except for mostly all the Solos. Was years later before I could touch on that portion of the record. But "Lucretia" loved it. Don't remember learning the song but still play it often to this day. Takes soom work to get it down. I still often Wonder how i was able to learn & play it back then. I've thought it's one of Megadeth's top 10 songs easily ever since I first picked up an axe as a tean and tried to learn to chop the treble clef in half with it (am still learning, back to it with a focus on technique finally after a decade+ away from the instrument once kids and work really "took off" 😅). Lucretia really highlights Megadeth's intimate knowledge of combining killer guitar riffs in interesting and intelligent ways. 🤘🏼

Many years ago I attended a guitar clinic by Marty Friedman in London when he was still in Megadeth. He was getting people to shout out solos and he would play them and also took questions. I shouted out for him to play Lucretia, to which he responded, "Ah, my favorite!". He then proceeded to absolutely shred an extended version of the Lucretia solo with added Marty-Style flourishes. It was quite simply spell-binding, magical and I will never forget it.

definitely think this is one of Megadeths more overlooked tracks, thanks for picking this song apart! The opening to this song is my favorite opening to any Megadeth song actually as well. I used to listen to it over and over again when I was a kid hahaha. Absolute masterful songwriting, and great memorable solos. Definitely one of my top 5 Megadeth songs, and one of the best from the absolutely legendary Rust In Peace. Every single song on this album is awesome.

"It just costs you your soul...."
I Love this song. I absolutely love this whole album. And I found it by accident. Back in the fall of 1990, I was really into AC DC. I went out to the local Zellers store, bought the AC DC album Flick of the Switch. But, when I got the cassette tape home, put it in the player and it wasn't AC DC at all. It was RUST IN PEACE album. I didn't even know who it was for a few months, despite showing the album to a few people. It was probably into the spring of 1991 when I was able to confirm what band it was. When I listened to Dawn Patrol, I actually thought the singer could be British LoL 😂.
Anyway, greatest thing to have happened. It was unlike anything I've ever heard before and I was hooked.
    Take care from Miramichi.

Daves vocals have always been very limited but in this song he's very creative with he's singing patterns.. Dave's solo are always sour and chromatic which is why Marty was a great opposition to him. One of my favorite megadeth songs. Thank you.

Bad omen, rust in piece... Polaris, addicted to chaos, killing is my business and business is good, Mary Jane, disconnect, last rites .. Loved to death, the list can go on , but if I had to choose only one, I would say bad omen. The song has an unique groovy, dark and funky simultaneously riff, combined with some of the most unbelievable drums recorded, plus the killer intro. I seriously don't know why it isn't more popular.

I think that first solo from Marty has been my favorite guitar solo since I first heard this album. both solos blew my mind when I heard them
however, I consider this song and Tornado of Souls to be the same song, I usually listen to them back to back if I'm not just playing the whole album. if Lucretia pauses at the very end, I can still hear the intro to Tornado of Souls in the exact key playing in my head
sort of like whenever I hear the end of Stairway to Heaven I get Misty Mountain Hop stuck in my head
