I feel like ACNH wasn't expected to be as popular as it turned out to be, and there just wasn't a long-term plan for more content. Had it been as popular as the more heavy-hitters, like Mario, it may have had more content than it does now. It came out at the right time, though, when everyone was stuck in the house and looking for ways to stay connected.
Fans of the original are still around, enjoying their islands with kids of their own. it's got quite a lot of adult players involved, myself included. I love signing on daily to recieve whacky letters from family that live several hours away from me.
My island is only a few months old at this point, so I haven't experienced the full game yet. However, I'm loving what's already there, and I'm excited to see how Nintendo improves on the next title.
Hopefully gold tools won't break.....
