I love the change after he sings "you know you only hurt yourself out of spite, I guess you'd rather be a martyr tonight" There is that pause after and the music conveys he is getting frustrated from pleading his case then takes a deep breath and calms down. We have all been there and can relate.
I never really saw it that way but now that you mentioned it yes he has found a woman he seems to like a lot and wants to love!!! He is getting frustrated at her lack of trust of him and he needs to calm down before that last verse!!! Very insightful of you! Thanks!!!!!
Thanks for the reaction. Absolutely love Billy Joel. He actually sang this last night at Madison Square Garden. He started the song a little lower, but still hit the high notes at 72 years old. He doesn’t often get enough credit for his singing. Most of the focus is on his extraordinary writing and playing. Hope there is more Billy Joel to come.
I've been a huge fan of Billy Joel since late childhood and I could never stop listening to him ! Such chords, such WORDS... That guy knew how to talk to lil' old 16 years old me back then !
That song was based on the style of the 60s group the Drifters. The whole album was one that used influences from his youth. Uptown Girl was inspired by Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. Tell Her About It was inspired by Motown. For the Longest Time was inspired by doo wop groups. I highly recommend watching him sing those or other songs live from one of his 1980s concerts.
Thanks for the clarification.... cause I thought both ways. Gotta do New York state of mind..live in the early days..no words..so much talent and diversity 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊enjoy
I remember having this tape in the Philippines. One summer we went on a trip and at the time, only had a couple tapes and Walkman with me. I listened to it so much I got sick of it. Definitely appreciate it again.
Oh so good. His vocals on this… actually this album.. are incredible. He’s 70’s and still singing for hours at concerts! Such energy. Such a treasure!! Great reaction!! Thank you 🙏🏼
I’ve always loved Billy Joel. I grew up listening to him and remember listening to this on cassette the very first time I went driving solo after getting my drivers license as a teen. It’s one of those songs etched into the soundtrack of my life.❤️
so amazing! My husband hear him in concert recently and he said, sorry my voice isn't as high as it used to be... a lady was singing the chorus. But we'll give him credit at his age!
Another couple recommendations by Billy Joel from the same album with great rhythm, lyrics, message and videos are: "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "Keeping the Faith", you should try them
This is a tricky song to get right. Too many stops and it can feel uneven, or if the arrangement is loud throughout, it can seem too much. Billy Joel wrote it, so he can do with it as he pleases, but even though I enjoy the song tremendously, I tend to think that it "stop-starts" a few times too many. With a slightly richer arrangement which kept building in intensity, I think the song would be a lot more effective than it already is, instead of sounding like a demo. Great nod to "Ricky Don't Lose That Number" with the opening bass riff, though.

Phenomenal! He’s in his 70’s and killing it still!!
Billy Joel was an absolute idol of my youth, and 40 years later this still continues to amaze me …

AWESOME
I consider myself blessed to have seen The Dueling Pianos (Elton and Billy). The greatest show of my life.
I was there at Shea Stadium and it was amazing
I saw them at Giants stadium…where I saw the Eagles less than a month later. Such a good time for music.
Billy is amazing! Great live performer, too!

both favorites
Hiya Dereck from North Shields, England
As great as Elton John is, Billy Joel creates the music and writes his own lyrics.
Yeah but in Elton's defense...I really believe he and Bernie Taupin share one brain, so it's basically the equivalent of one person writing tbh
Desireless - voyage voyage
They've performed together - Billy and Elton - 1994.

Love Billy Joel, and a great reaction. But I have to say that I'm bummed you no longer have a Queen picture behind you. A small thing, I know, but ...
You give your self away by singing the lyrics before they happen, you have already heard this song. No you are not reaching to this song. I call BS!
