Full Overhaul of our Land Rover Discovery 3 / S4-Ep21

  • We started a complete overhaul of our 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3. The car is now 17 years old and has 270.000 km on the clock. We love this car very much and decided to renew it completely, even though the engine is running perfectly. We just do not want to take the risk of a major engine failure of the TDV6 - which is well known for oil starvation. This is episode one of this exercise.
    We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.
    Thanks for watching,
    Vera & Christian

      Yeah, they are trying. That joke,about The Police man asking why his wife is in such a state ! With him explaining her various accidents !
      I think that most German people have, a tongue in cheek humour. Where, actually. The joke is, how casual they are about some horrendous crime !
      Or perhaps behaving in an unacceptable way in a blundering , clumsy way yet still determined in their determination to reach a goal .

    I just took my 17 year old Discovery 3 down to the fields to check a newly planted crop. A guy who lives in our village is a recently retired LR Director (only 50 something years old!). I told him that when I get home, I will watch this video and I will forward it to him. I am sure he going to enjoy it.
    He then said that the Discovery 3 was a huge landmark for LR, so good that they should still be making that same vehicle today. Which makes me smile that he arrived at the field in a one year old Defender!
    Anyway guys, keep up the good work. You are doing it all right!
    I especially love the idea of the frame and jockey wheels to mount the body on work on the underside, without occupying your 2 post lift.
    PS, IMO every Discover, RRS and RR should use a maximum of 18” rims for a more comfortable, less bumpy ride on badly maintained roads.

    • @MarkSpohr
      @MarkSpohr Год назад +2

      Disco 3 was their big transition from Disco 2 "rock crawler" to "mall crawler". Too bad they didn't keep the Defender Disco2 suspension. Also, it appears that they made a lot of complicated "enhancements" to the vehicle leading to multiple failures (as well documented by LRTIME).

    • @samrodian919
      @samrodian919 Год назад +3

      Yes I almost agree with you lol I have a 4.2 Supercharged Overfinch Range Rover it was running 285-35ZR-22's and the ride was frankly bloody awful ! I got a secondhand set of Pirelli Scorpion M+S 255-55's on 19" rims and it transformed the ride completely. I don't do crazy speeds these days as I'm getting too old so the "Lesser" grip tyres are no problem and on wet grass I can actually get where I want to go!

    Hi folks. I studied Chemistry and thought of Land Rovers. Because we learned that things should be engineered with, metals the same. Iron with iron. Yet, The Land Rover used to have a Aluminium body.
    So, it's nice to see a couple working with their baby, as a car is like a baby to some people, I heard.
    I wonder if the body is still Aluminium or are modern Land Rovers steel ?
    What a complex machine and really an incredible achievement to own this amazing thing .
    My only tip is to wear gloves and beware of stupid mistakes in British Engineering.

    Hi Christian & Vera, really looking forward to watching this project develop! Firstly, regarding the crankshaft, do you take the view that once it's lasted 270,000 KM, there's a really good chance it won't fail? Secondly, you mention oil starvation in the description but you must have good oil pressure (new oil pump & 5W40), so are you concerned about historical oil pressure (old oil pumps, 5W30) and the effect on engine wear, or are you concerned about further improving oil pressure going forward? Or perhaps you're concerned about potential oil loss through the turbo, valve stem oil seals, piston rings? Thanks for the videos, they're superb👍

    Wow, this is a great show. Just a tip: When restoring the body work, use a rust converter as this will get to any unseen hole that have the potential to restart the rust process from underneath the new primer and top paint, you can if you want to remove this new layer but most rust converters are also like a primer coat. Still think you should extend the filming time as some people are not sure how to use a spanner, i.e. Toyota drivers. Looking forward to the next video.

    The object of the exercise was to separate the body from the chassis, from what I could tell on each occasion you have done this you have been successful. Who cares what order you take a clip or a bolt out, if you don't break anything in the process then you have achieved your goal. These goons that complain about your procedures probably don't know the difference between a woodruff key and an ignition key so their comments are about as valid as the guy selling rocking horse poo.

    Seeing the underbody rust made me shudder. I bought a Jag X-type at auction once which turned out to be a personal import from Europe where they salt the roads. It looked like it had been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for 10 years. Faaaar worse than yours.

    On your steel, i use Bilt Hamber it's a rust convertor, i wouldn't use anything else, i have coated a piece of steel with it & left it outside for around 12 months & no rust has returned

    It doesn't matter how you decide to take a body off it is your choice, on my classic Austin club members say drop the engine down & get it out from underneath, i use a crane & lift it out from the top, it's my choice no one elses & it's not any harder the way i do it
