Interesting. Before watching this video, I used to think that 'fate' is always associated to something negative: "it's my fate to study English through youtube for the rest of my life, I'll never have the chance to study abroad". And destiny, I thought it was something general, usually positive: "destiny decided that we should be together..." Thank you Jennifer
You're not far off, Thiago. "Fate" is often but not always associated with unpleasant events. We even have the adjective "ill-fated." However, fate can be kind. Fate can be merciful. Fate can being two people together. In that last situation, speakers may use either of the words: It was their destiny to be together. From a certain standpoint, "destiny" can be negative, like Luke Skywalker being told that his destiny was to join the Dark Side and rule along with his father, Darth Vader.
Hi Jenifer hope you are doing well. Another nice topic I would appreciate you to be done about side taste. On Russian we say "привкус". Imagine I did sourdough bread and did a replacement of quarter of rye flour into buckwheat flour. So If you beat piece of bread you will feel "?" what? What is the word in English?
Please visit me on Instagram too. I read a short story during a live, and that helps with intonation and rhythm. There are five reels that break the story down into parts. Vocabulary notes included. :)
Yes, you will achieve this! Just keep up with your studies and seek opportunities to use your English. You can say, "One day I will speak English fluently, God willing." ("Will" works better for the future. Or "will be able to.")
Hello, Jennifer! Thanks a million for the lesson! I believe that there is present a fate in the human life. Sometimes we make a lot of efforts to get something, but the result is zero:(
Glad you liked it. As for "God willing," it really depends on a person's beliefs. For example, saying things like "Oh God!" or "Oh my God!" doesn't necessarily imply that a person is religious. Those interjections have become common expressions of surprise. However, "God willing" is more limited. It's used more by those who have faith in God. I don't think age is as strong a factor. Another thing people might say is "I hope to God": I hope to God he's telling the truth. But again, that may or may not mean the speaker actually believes in God. Hope that helps.
Destiny and fate have their equivalent in kismet and naseeb in Persian/Hindi .Naseeb is what is already decided..kismet is chancy with an element of fate in it.. The equivalent of God willing in Persian will be inshalla..(I remember the air hostess announcing, " your flight to Cairo will land in two hours, Inshalla" omg, she needs God's help to pilot the craft, a tremor of fear runs down my spine! Every culture seems to have words with these meanings.. (I a
Oh my! I would be really nervous if the flight attendant said something like, "Your flight to Cairo will land in two hours, Inshalla" or "God willing"! What is she suggesting? That maybe the pilot isn't very competent or the plane is old and not working well, so we won't be landing? Ha ha. Yes, "destiny" is more forward-thinking, but they overlap, don't they? I like the sound of those words: kismet and naseeb. :) Regards!
That was a good lesson. We also have "ill-fated." One may hear others say, "That was an ill-fated plan." Destiny is a fun word, but I prefer George McFly's version: "density."
"Ill-fated" is a good word to learn, but hopefully no one will have to use it to often...at least not in reference to their own life events. Glad you liked the inclusion of George's famous but endearing blunder.
Please make a video about 'would have' and 'would have been'. And also let me know if can i use 'might have' in place of 'would have' in the following sentence. A braver man than Vernon Dursley would have quailed under the furious look Hagrid now gave him;

Hello Jennifer, to me I think that "fate is something that is related to God's will, but destiny is something that is decided by our choice; I could not kill my self by a gun and say that "it's God's will" ... that's wrong b/c this is my destiny that I have chosen...at the same time I could not describe an accident that had happened to me by " it's my destiny" b/c it's God's will and I have no choice in this matter ...here I can say _it's my fate...May Heaven be our destination at doom's day 🙏
Fate and destiny are largely understood by someone's belief system. And for those who believe in God, they may or may not believe that we have control over events. The understanding of these concepts vary. Thanks for watching!

I like to think that we have more control over events than we think. We have to invest the effort and have a positive attitude to shape our destiny.
@@Englishwithjennifer Okay! It's a good point.
Thanks
You're very welcome!
That was awesome! 👍. The phrase " God willing" is it common among teenagers? Is it normal to use it among teens?
