- This video was recorded on a VHS tape by me in 1998. It's from Hip Hop Week on MTV. I do not own any of the content contained within this video, however I do own the VHS tape that the recording resides on.
This Hip Hop week on MTV was the reason i asked my mom to buy me turntables! This one moment in history changed the direction of my entire life and i'm thankful for it! 19 years later and i'm still rocking the decks and i'll never give em up!
R.I.P. Jam Master Jay, eleven years later. You still live in our hearts.
And 20 years later too.

This was my time when I was around 16 - 17 years old and back then we always showed love to the ones who paved the way, we never called them "old heads" and whatever else. Young at the time we had much respect for the old school 💯💯💯

IMHO, JMJ was a humble and titanic DJ. When Run and D. said that "He's on his way to be best DJ in the U.S. of A," it may have sounded like a cheap rhyme, but at that time J WAS the best DJ in the U.S. of A. R.I.P. J.

Y'all have no idea how many times I've watched this and I still tear up I missed this era so freaking bad. I just finished watching Run DMC perform hit it run on Soul Train and I still tear up every time I see this this was the Pinnacle of Hip Hop and what it meant to people that wanted something greater. There will never ever be another error like this

naw you grew up in the right era. Let me tell you, when Flash started doing this in the 70s he broke every single rule a DJ was suppose to follow. He let you hear the queue up which is the scratches you hear from the discs.. you weren't suppose to do that. you weren't suppose to scratch the record like that. he was the only person on Earth when he started this.. this dude broke conventional thinking. More than likely you wouldn't have been in the right place at the right time, with the right frame of mind (Non-mainstream).. cuz the mainstream in his hood rejected him. no clubs wanted him because he scratched the records he touched the records, he let the audience hear the queue up.. Grandmaster Flash is an outlier and anyone alive in The Bronx in the late 70s who were fans or into this were all outliers too.
Those were DJ"s, not these guys with their tablets today
FYI Flash continues to support new technology in hip hop and supports modern DJ's.

Flash did not invent the dj mixer cue for the first time. Disco mixers already had that as early as 1971 and somewhere around this time radio DJs and studios were also making use of pre-fader listening. He appears to have come up with it on his own, though, but others had already done it. He did, however, take Kool Herc's "merry go round" technique of playing just the break sections of single records back to back and combined it with disco club DJ Frank Grasso's juggling two of the same records multiple times, which lengthened the same short breaks sections Herc had used and improved the sense of timing. Flash also added his student's (Grand Wizzard Theodore) new scratching technique and very successfully integrated it into his own beat juggling. Flash either created, created again, or combined from others a substantial part of what became turntablism. The disco, funk, and early hip hop scenes appear to have been very fluid and fed off each other, though. BTW, Kool Herc was also one of the central people to bring traditional rapping and rhyming into this NY scene.

The first record Flash plays is "Do It The French Way" by Crown Heights Affair.

because there were no sync buttons and computers needed to dj in the golden days of djing...us old skool djs still use turntables dont get me wrong there are some programs that we use that still require work with turntables and we put in work but for the most part people are getting mp3s and a computer and a cheap program and calling themselves djs..the art of djing as we know it is becoming extinct...as an artform nowadays..

Scratching isn't practical in clubs really. Club djs aren't there for technical skill but for how well they can keep the music going

It doesn't matter who wins. To me, these two guys are doing the things they loved the most and that's what missing in today's music. Everybody is just doing it for the money. Nobody is doing it for the love of Hip-Hop. We got to bring this back, or Hip-Hop is going to die, if it hasn't died already.

See!!! See that's why I LOVE THE PRIOR GENERATIONS because they made it a point to pay homage to those before them! Jay literally cut Ed off and was like wait, let me pay my respects to all the great ones before me!!! My generation, (This generation) somehow was not taught that golden lesson, and that's why they are not respected by anyone but themselves and their peers. Which is wack!! Back in the days u had the youth giving love to the og's and the OGs appreciating the youth! That's how it should be. But oh well!
