    Hi James. Re bathroom have a square shower. Then you will have space between the shower and the side of the boat. Here you can have a cupboard and above it several shelves. This gives you more storage space. Useful for possible toiletries and towels. Under the cupboard fit a pump to empty the shower which in the future is easy to access and the discharge through the hull is easy to access aswell and hidden in the cupboard. Suggest a whale pump with switch in the shower. Also use the solid shower boards instead of tiling. Water proof and quicker and easier than tiling.
    Only a thought, regards Simon.

    Looks good... I know you need space for the kids, but you could maybe add some shallow cupboards/shelves on the opposite side to the sink? You'd still have room for a chair. As deep as a tin cupboard, kind of thing. It's a mighty project, whatever you do to it.

    I have a small campervan and can only advise keeping things simple and straight forward. The layout needs to be right for "you". It took me 4 years of searching to find a layout that suited me. The design will evolve as you think about it and you will refine the ideas down to the final one.

    I had my stove on the angle but a couple of years ago moved it so it was facing across the boat. The amount of stuff that fell into that dead triangle behind that you couldn't get at when the stove was hot really started to annoy me. My galley floor has terracotta tiles and they extend to around the stove area. Helps when you need to plan clearances etc. Drop the stove hearth down to the base plate so the hearth itself is flush with the top floor and doesn't become a trip hazard. When the table is up you will bark your ankles on the hearth otherwise. Also have a vent in the flooring under/behind the fridge to draw cool air up from the bilges to help keep it cool. (Wish I had done this when I was fitting my boat out)

    Great video, I love seeing how things will be fitted in :), I have a nature’s head in my tiny house and I love it, however unless you are going to compost the waste yourself I think you are better with a bucket style so you can line with a bag, the nature’s head has an agitator, which prevents this.... on one of the narrow boat experience’s vlogs, they were saying if they had to do it again they would not have gone for the nature’s head. Good luck with it all, I have just found your channel, so am catching up :)

    If you put a 1/2 inch air space between the fireproof and the cabinet, I think it will be fine. We cut 1/2 inch pieces of copper water pipe as spacers and thru bolt it. Countersink the heads a bit to keep the tile flat. Great layout work John

  • @MrTheanalogkid
    @MrTheanalogkid 4 года назад

    Great vlog👍. I was thinking flipping the multi-fuel and dinette around too. Not that your design isn’t good and well thought out, however this way you would have your multi-fuel in an even more central location, you would still have the chilling looking out the other hatch scenario and option for a U-shaped galley giving more base unit storage/counter space. Also the fridge may have to work a little harder in those cold months when the fire is lit closer to the stove. Screen for projector could then drop down between hatch and window at the 6ft and 12ft mark. Great vlogs you’re producing James and very informative indeed👌

    • @MrTheanalogkid
      @MrTheanalogkid 4 года назад

      @Chris G good point Chris, mind you I was also thinking with a sub 50ft narrowboat it will heat up quite quickly with the fire in either location. Also the fire could go on the port side of the bulkhead facing the stern leaving space for the tv/projector screen in the corner?

    A small potential issue with having the hob right next to the 'wall' separating the kitchen from the stove is having somewhere for pan handles to go when they're on the right hand rings.

    Have you thought of fitting electric underfloor heating on your boat, Then at least if your hooked up in a Marina over winter possibly you can just plug your boat into the mains and not burn so much coal and wood , less dust particulates, by the way loving your blogs

  • @bigKDL
    @bigKDL 4 года назад

    Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that the angle of the side on a boat is called the "Tumblehome" as for your fit out plans I personally would make the dinette slightly different to your plan first thing not to have it raised second thing is to make two settees 2ftx4ft free standing then a table 2ftx4ft with this set up you can have a L shape or a Pullman or any other way you like and still turn into a double bed.The main thing is don't fix the table to the floor it will turn into your worst nightmare.As for a toilet buy the cheapest dry toilet you can find they are as good as any thousand pound one they do not need a fan you don't get any smells avoid buying one with any sort of mixing device this means you have to tip from the toilet to a bag before you put in the bins.There is a Facebook site on dry toilets that has loads of info you might be interested in.

    • @theotherstevesteve
      @theotherstevesteve 4 года назад

      You very much do need a fan to ensure it dries the solids. Try going to the toilet in a bucket and see how long it takes to stink. The agitator breaks it up and dries it out; looks like peat when you empty it out. You can go longer without emptying; I know people without an agitator have to poke the contents with a stick to spread it out. Not for me! That's the difference between a composting toilet and a bucket.

    • @bigKDL
      @bigKDL 4 года назад

      @@theotherstevesteve thank for your amusing reply I have been using one without a fan or agitator and have had no trouble at all I brought mine direct from the maker who happens to moor in the same place as me and I know of six others on our mooring who have brought off of him and have yet to hear a bad word said it sounds like you have brought one of the thousand pound plus ones and your just trying to justify paying that sort of money

    Interesting. If you could move the sink 6 inches to the right then you might be able to place an angled cabinet in the corner to the left of it, allowing for a bit more storage. Just a thought.

    Definitely coming together and loving your videos. My only comment would be that the measurements in your bathroom looks very tight. You only have 6 possibly 9 inches between loo and basin. Difficult for anyone to sit comfortably on the loo. 😱 would you create more usable space if you did bathroom as an S shape?

    I think you're going to need somewhere to hang your wet weather gear, wellies etc. and also somewhere to store lifejackets for the kids. Are you planning on deck boxes? Where are you planning on putting that enormous water tank? Under the bed? Also, instant water heater or what? I heard you say you didn't want a calorifier.
    Subscribed, BTW. ;o)

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  4 года назад

      Good to have you on board - no calorifier as it’s an air cooled engine. The massive water tank will go under the hatch in the bow I reckon and to of cabinet will be a bench for the kids to watch out of. Yes I’ll have some lockers built in the stern cruiser it’s ample big enough. If I can afford a pram cover one day then that’ll be my wet weather area - until then no guests unless it’s summer 🤣

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt

  • @Allottedaaron
    @Allottedaaron 4 года назад +2

    The thought that struck me is that galleys work best when there is a preparation area to get food ready, a cooking area, a cleaning area which is obviously the sink, and a drying area where pots can sit whilst they dry. All looks to be fine apart from the preparation area which isn't immediately obvious. Were you going to prepare food sitting at the dinette or did you have other plans?

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  4 года назад +2

      Good observation and I was either going to use the dinette table or if I have the time and can find the parts, I’ll make a fold out counter coming out of the drawer below the hob turning it into a u-shaped galley. I could put in a work surface on the starboard side too which I’m considering for extra space, probably just coming out 40/50cms and maybe 60/80 long

    • @JeffKogut
      @JeffKogut 4 года назад +2

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt How about the fridge under the oven, then the sink area where you have it, then turning the hob 90 degrees to form a U shaped galley (even if the hob is slightly wide and goes back over the corner cabinet)? Twin cabinet doors under the sink with access to each corner area. The heating stove gets a wider backing which might bias radiating the heat toward the bow. The big advantage is having a real workspace between the sink and hob. Storage/food pantry under the gunnels opposite as you may already be thinking.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  4 года назад +1

      Jeff Kogut mate, you’ve got it spot on. I definitely agree that the fridge should go under the oven - I’m not 100% on the u-shaped galley as the stove would be more eclipsed from the stern (not the end of the world though). But the more I’m thinking about it, even as I’m writing this, I’m inclining to agree with your idea. Cheers

    • @midwestconcertvideo
      @midwestconcertvideo 4 года назад

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt One of the advantages of the u-shape is that you could have access doors into the cabinet from both sides, or a space for storage for stove fuel.
      By the way, my wife and I both laughed delightedly when we heard you talking about a projector. We're watching this on an inexpensive but excellent video projector in our home, and a pull-down screen would be wonderful. It can come down in front of a window or a hatch without taking up wall space all the time. Realistically, you're only likely to be watching the projector in the evenings when you're not cruising.
