The most common reason why you would drain your pool is because of high TDS. TDS, or Total Dissolved Solids, is the measurement of all dissolved substances in your pool water. When this level gets too high, the only way to lower it is by partially draining your pool. This dilutes the water and lowers the TDS level.
Draining your pool is not as simple as it may sound, and it can severely damage your pool if done incorrectly. Follow the guidelines in this video to ensure you know the best pool draining practices.

    1) How much of this info changes when you're feeling with an above ground pool?
    2) Our obove ground pool sat for two winter's and one summer, unused and uncovered. I know some leaves fell in.
Does that mean the "TDS" levels are pretty much certain, to be too high?
    3) I've been told that "shock" can bring back "nasty" water that even had tadpoles in it, and there's no need to drain even if it sat this long, has slimy inner lining, dark green water, can't see the bottom etc. (I don't think it has tadpoles, but I know I wouldn't want to jump in that sucker right now!)
Is that true? If a pool is in such condition, is it possible to clean and purify the water? Or should it automatically be drained, then clean & disinfected and refilled & treated?

Our info deals in the size/gallons of water in the pool. We recommend taking in a water sample to get a true picture of what you're working with. Then you'll know for sure if it should be drained.

How green is too green because it's the middle of summer and my pool equipment has been broken for two months or more.
