A wonderful period in my life; I was 17yrs old when this came out. the arrangement, lyrics, vocals, instruments, are beautiful. the 70's jazz-fusion period will never be repeated. Now in my 50's I think about when I was 17 and with everything ahead of me. Love-it! Love-it!

The melody, the harmony, the subtle sweetness of Sergio and his band's almost timeless Bossa Nova style have made this a go to feel good song for years.

There are 5 dislikes of this tune? How is that possible? How could anyone not love everything about this song, the concept, the melody, the chord progression, the singers, the arrangement, the lyrics....? I'm blown away that anyone could dislike almost anything bossa nova, but this tune? It's a classic. It will be around forever -- fortunately, long after the 5 individuals who actually gave it a thumbs down.

Fersomling The melody and the chord progression stand on their own, aside from whether the message is romantic or otherwise. And you could just easily say the message was about biology. I stand by my charge. Anyone who doesn't get this song needs to expand his mind -- and in a lot of directions.

I know absolutely nothing about the mathematics of music, nor can I read it, but I know what I like, and I dig this song.
I've been listening to Sergio Mendes&Brasil '66 since I was 12 years old in 1968.
Lani Hall's voice always gave me aural pleasure, as well as her harmonies with, was it Janice Hansen?

Saw this performed by presumably these same singers on record at Cleveland's Front Row Theatre fall of '74. It was the showstopper, unspeakably beautiful, even more so than their hits. The way the two vocalists played off each other was mesmerizing. It's the mud, it's the mud!

A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass, it is life, it's the sun
It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms, a fox in the brush
The knot in the wood, the song of a thrush
The wood of the wind, a cliff, a fall
A scratch, a lump, it is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free, it's the end of the slope
    It's a beam, it's a void, it's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain, It's the joy in your heart
The foot, the ground, the flesh and the bone
The beat of the road, a slingshot's stone
A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light
A shot of a gun in the dead of the night
    A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump,
    It's a girl, it's a rhyme, it's a cold, it's the mumps
    .
The plan of the house, the body in bed
And the car that got stuck, it's the mud, it's the mud
    A float, a drift, a flight, a wing
A hawk, a quail, oh, the promise of spring
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart (repeat)
    A point, a grain, a bee, a bite
A blink, a buzzard, a sudden stroke of night
    A pin, a needle, a sting, a pain
    A snail, a riddle, a wasp, a stain
A snake, a stick, it is John, it is Joe
    A fish, a flash, a silvery glow
The bed of the well, the end of the line
The dismay on the face, it's a loss, it's a find
    A spear, a spike, a point, a nail
A drip, drip, drip, drop, the end of the day
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life in your heart, in your heart (repeat)
,the end of the road,a little alone
A sliver of glass, a life, the sun
A knife, a death, the end of the run
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart
    The waters of March,
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart

I think there might be a correction to the lyrics due, not sure, because at 74 my hearing isn't the best anymore. Toward the end I believe the line should be "A horse in the moon." If that's right, it's one of the more incredible lines. I was blown away to learn Jobim wrote both the the Brazilian and English lyric. That's really special.

Jobim was a master in writing simple lyrics to his songs. This song is very visual.
My favorite stanza is near the end.
"A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule,
In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue"
It's like you are in the mountains overlooking Rio watching a glorious sunset.
    Just magnificent!
There is a stanza that was left out of Sergio's rendition. It comes before "A pass in the mountains"
    "A pin. A needle. A sting. A pain. A snail. A riddle. A wasp. A stain."
Jobim left us much too soon.
Ever hear the CD "Sinatra Sings Jobim" with arrangements by Jobim?
    Simply Awesome..

If you are amazed about the English lyrics, you would be crazy about the original Portuguese lyrics of Águas de Março. I do not want to be rude or unpolite, but English language never could have verses such as "É peroba do campo. É o nó da madeira. Caingá, candeia, é a Matinta Pereira". In my humble opinion, these last verses are the cup of tea of the whole lyrics and are completely untranslated from Brazilian Portuguese into English. Or even particles such as "tombo da ribanceira", "caco de vidro", "resto de toco", "festa da cumeeira", "madeira de vento", "conversa à ribeira das Águas de Março", "pedra de atiradeira", "é o fim da picada", "estilhaço na estrada". All these are typical Brazilian scenes and imagery which only Brazilian Portuguese can express in its full meaning and beauty.

A stick, a stone, the end of the road
The rest of a stump, a lonesome road
A sliver of glass, a life, the Sun
A knife, a death, the end of the run
And the river bank talks of the waters of march
It's the end of all strain, it's the joy in your heart........

    A stick, a stone
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump
    It's a little alone
    It's a sliver of glass
It is life, it's the sun
It is night, it is death
    It's a trap, it's a gun
    The oak when it blooms
    A fox in the brush
    The knot in the wood
    The song of a thrush
    The wood of the wind
    A cliff, a fall
    A scratch, a lump
    It is nothing at all
    It's the wind blowing free
It's the end of the slope
    It's a beam it's a void
    It's a hunch, it's a hope
    And the river bank talks
    Of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
    The joy in your heart
    The foot, the ground
    The flesh and the bone
    The beat of the road
    A slingshot stone
    A fish, a flash
    A silvery glow
    A fight, a bet
    The range of a bow
    The bed of the well
    The end of the line
    The dismay in the face
    It's a loss, it's a find
    A spear, a spike
    A point, a nail
    A drip, a drop
    The end of the tale
    A truckload of bricks
    In the soft morning light
    The sound of a shot
In the dead of the night
    A mile, a must
    a thrust, a bump
    It's a girl, it's a rhyme
    It's a cold, it's the mumps
    The plan of the house
    The body in bed
And the car that got stuck
It's the mud, it's the mud
    A float, a drift
    A flight, a wing
    A hawk, a quail
    The promise of spring
    And the river bank talks
    Of the waters of March
    It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
    A snake, a stick
It is John, it is Joe
It's a thorn in your hand
And a cut in your toe
    A point, a grain
    A bee, a bite
    A blink, a buzzard,
    A sudden stroke of night
    A pass in the mountains
    A horse and a mule
    In the distance the shelves
    Rode three shadows of blue
    And the river talks
    Of the waters of March
    It's the promise of life
In your heart, in your heart
    A stick, a stone
    The end of the load
    The rest of a stump
    A lonesome road
    A sliver of glass
    A life, the sun
    A knight, a death,
    The end of the run
    And the river bank talks
    Of the waters of March
It's the end of all strain
It's the joy in your heart
