This is one of the most likeable and knowledgeable people on RUclips I have ever seen. What a great service he is doing for us all who are novices.
Thank you Greg
Nerdy gurdy is good variant for beginners. I made this one. Just download files for laser cut and 3d printing and assemble instructions. I order cuting and printing at my local and find other parts in hardware and music shops. I costs to me about 200 euro.
Thank you so much! I really like it. And you know, those little $60 gurdies were what even let me know the hurdy gurdy existed. Then I started to research and I found these communities, and I found some amazing videos of what this instrument can really sound like. I have to save some money to buy the Nerdy Gurdy, but when I do, I will be so happy. I already love my ukuleles, and this will be something totally special!! :)
I am so glad I found this video. I was considering buying a galloping Gertie
4:15 Bold of you to assume I wont already make weird noises and sounds from hell when I get a Gurdy
I loved that final rumba :D
Haha yes! It's rumba de tomiño 😁
Did you ever try a model built by Mihaly Vrabel from Hungary ? I just bought one, and i think for 630€ it is a decent instrument, but i am a new player on hurdy gurdies ... I got it in 3 weeks only because he was just finishing to build a clear varnished Barokk.
Can i turn my ukulele in to one or would that be considered an HGSO, i was considering the ugears kit, but after hearing how it sounded i was like no that won’t work for me, so i thought why not use a ukulele, i already have one, all i have to do is make the wheeland crank, change the strings, put cotton on the strings, rosin the wheel which should be easy sinse i play violin, put on a different bridge, tune it and practice a lot, by the wayit won’t have a keyboard because i’m going to be playing irish music which has a lot of ornamentation, do i need a buzzing bridge or can i play without one, i’m practicing the ornaments on my violin and it’s really hard
That’s a very bad idea sorry
I’m kinda in a pickle now. I’ve been wanting to learn Hurdy Gurdy for a while now and my wife surprised me this Christmas with a… galloping Gurdy. She thought she got a good deal on the instrument.
So now I’m using the instrument to practice and get the basic concepts down, but it doesn’t sound good. Now I feel like I have to wait at least a year before I “upgrade”.
Although, I’ve seen waiting lists are usually about a year, so maybe I can start the process now…
I dunno, what do you think? Is it worth practicing on a galloping Gurdy, or would I just be teaching myself bad habits/form?
You’ll develop bad habits, if you can get a refund please do it and get yourself a nerdy gurdy kit from Marti Jo on Facebook if you are in the US
If you can’t get a refund we can try to set up your galloping over zoom and see how bad it is and what can we do to get you moving your fingers while we wait for a better option
My email: zanfoneando@gmail.com
I have partial left hand/arm paralysis- do they make a version where the left arm is the crank arm?
Yes, its possible
@@Sergio.GonzalezPrats now I need to decide who to reach out to to make one!
Whats your budget? Send me an email to zanfoneando@gmail.com
Hi, first of all I apologize because of my broken, Tarzan-like English... I ask you:
- Is a 21 stringed modern HurdyGurdy really better than a 3 or 4 stringed simpler item? It is worth for 5, 6 or even more thousands of dollars than that for just 1000 or 1500 USD?
Or, what do you think, is it a good idea for a beginner to buy a cheaper (approximately 1000 USD) HG and later to buy one of that abovementioned expensive HurdyGurdies for 6000 USD approx.? Or it is better to start with a toplevel expensive model without delay?
"21 strings hurdy gurdy" is a clickbait tittle, there's nothing like that, its just that some gurdies have 8-12 sympathetic strings (which you don't play and resonate by sympathy)
I recommend to start with a 2/2/2 instrument with or without sympsthetics, 6 strings is great to start with, if you want more flexibility get 2/3/2.
Sadly 1000 USD is wasting money, the cheapest option is around 1300 USD, aplo by MM instruments or make yourself a nerdy gurdy kit 350USD
Tbh if you can spend money I would write to sedoluthier@gmail.com and get something around 3500/4000 USD directly, you will save a lot of headaches, you also have Marco Gamarra or ELZ in brasil
Tell them you come from me if you write, they will treat you extra nice ;)
Super late comment, but do I need to know notes to play the hurdy gurdy? I played a bit of piano as a child buuuuut that's about it (:
Hey Sophie it definitely helps, on my class programming I do teach a bit of reading but we learn 50% by ear and 50% with notes. If you go to hurdygurdystraps.com you can find my music sheet library
What's about the russian masters? When I checked the sound of them, it wasn't so awfull like Gallopin gurdies, or the instruments made by that polish guy?
I am not really aware of the Russian market, it's a little closed market somehow
@@Sergio.GonzalezPrats I understand, because they mostly communicate in russian, that's the disadvantage of some post soviet countries.
🎶 let me sing you the song of the FAQ 🎶 Great video Sergio 😁
SHIT I FORGOT TO SING IT
Ps. Everyone check scott's channel for gurdy awesomeness 😁
@Ur Buddy EvanIf you want to get info on makers, please join the Hurdy Gurdy Community, it's a nice place full of gurdyplayers, from total beginners (like me) to pros like Sergio and Michalina. There is a list of makers to avoid, and a list with prices and descriptions of the instruments from various makers. I'd also advice you to take a look at the Hurdy Gurdy Census (www.zanfoneando.com/hurdy-gurdy-census/) to see if there are players nearby that you can contact and maybe play for a bit on their instrument whenever this pandemic madness is over.
I wished I stumbled across your videos before buying my hurdy gurdy from Gallopin Gurdies lol. They are indeed garbage, I guess I was worried about buying an instrument and finding I can't play or hate it. I've never played an instrument before this one so I let my fears and urgency to get my hands on a crappy quality one. I can *sometimes* get it to sound ok. Just... ok. But most of the time its awful. I'll definitely be purchasing my next one from Gordiy Starukh with my next tax return. Yeah I'll need to wait but I'd rather wait then rush like last time.
All is said :)
almost everything! We still have to talk about altarwind 🤷🏼♀️😂
@@Sergio.GonzalezPrats Ahahah yes but it's controversial. At least EVERYONE agrees about the fact that Galloping gurdies are shit. But I've heard Zell's AW gurdy, and it sounds good actually. And I've heard Traunecker's, Weichelsbaumer's, Hilsmann's, Simons', and many other gurdies in my life. I guess there is like one or two good AW on this earth.
Im your new student 🤜🏻🤛🏻🇺🇦😘
