Revisiting the first of Massenet's exquisite series of orchestral suites (the real Magnificent Seven). Saturday night starts closing in as the gorgeous Nocturne soothes my ears. Wonderful composer whose music has come to mean so much to me over the years.......

Max, that Nocturne is so beautiful, even if the outpouring of emotion is somewhat retrained because it's a nocturne (or because that may be a trait of Massenet's music) ! In its lushness and nostalgia, it resembles the styles of some of the most intense and sentimental melodies by Puccini, Mascagni, and even Korngold (e.g. Die Tote Stadt).

Hello, Hector! Haven't heard from you in a while. Just perusing some old uploads and came across your reply which You Tube didn't notify me of. Hope all's well with you.

Greetings, Max ! Hope all is well ! There is a gorgeous piano "Nocturrne" by Massenet from his 10 Pièces de genre, Op.10. It is short but so beautiful ...

You'll have me in tears soon! Massenet was another of my Dad's favourites. Again, I recall an old LP with orchestral extracts from "The Cid" that he had. I doubt if he'd ever heard of the pieces on this CD but I'm sure he would have enjoyed them....I will, too!

Max, my Dad didn't have an extensive LP collection but among other things, he did have all 10 volumes of the original 1970's Decca series The Hundred Best Tunes which greatly expanded my horizons as a youngster.

Rodders, I think our initiation into the wonders of orchestral music might well have been very similar. My dad tended to go for "bleeding chunks" by and large. He was no music expert but he had a pretty good ear. He also introduced me, via radio, to Tony Hancock!

Max, my father probably only had a handful of records including complete works, but when he had one he really liked (like the Emperor Concerto) he played it a lot.British humour often went over his head so it was my mother who introduced me to Hancock when she bought a second hand copy of the LP 'Pieces of Hancock' (which included, among other things extracts from the East Cheam Drama Festival.)

Fantastic purely orchestral work by Massenet. The Nocturne exemplifies the beautiful, intense melodic style, that may have influenced Puccini heavily.

An unfairly maligned composer. His rivals were jealous of his success.
