Tom can object to being a celebrity -- he's RUclips famous but hardly a household name. I'm just happy to see continued collaborations between RUclipsrs like this. It ultimately makes for better content.
@Jimmy De'Souza He said that "not all Republicans are bigot, but all bigots are Republicans". Is like saying that not all Democrats are communists, but all communists are leftists
@Jimmy De'Souza If he had said "Bigots vote Trump. Therefore Trump voters are bad" or something similar, then this would be the fallacy you describe. He didn't say that, though, you projected that into the video yourself. He never says Trump voters are bad. He says bigots feel validated by Trump's win. His conclusion is that we should all be friendlier to each other and lead by example to combat the push to extremes in politics. If you are against being friendlier, I can't help you.
No Tom, Brady used “celebrity” in exactly the right way. Want proof that you are famous? Play “akinator” with Alexa and she can guess “Tom Scott” as a famous person in as few as 9 questions.
you must have been very lucky, he was "played" just few hundred times and required more than 30 questions to guess for me (and didn't manage to guess it at all the first time round)
My mom told me about how they used similar scenery models with cameras for visuals in early simulators when she was in the Air Force, at least the older simulators they had at the time (early '70s if I remember right). She said that she'd been warned to not crash the sim, as doing so would physically crash the camera into the terrain model and damage something. Still cheaper than crashing a real airplane or space shuttle though.
This was a brilliant video. One thing that continues to blow my mind though is how little mention there is in edutainment (and media in general) about the need for radiators on spacecraft. I was born before Challenger exploded and this is _the first mention I've ever heard_ that the shuttle had radiators inside the cargo bay. Maybe you could do a video dispelling the common misconception that because space is cold (sort of), the problem is keeping astronauts warm. Nobody ever talks about heat rejection in space - I think you all just assume that everyone knows already, but we don't. Please tell us 😁
At 5:03 you can see a yellow box on the left. It's a G.I. Joe Mercury capsule. I had one of those as a kid back in the mid-Sixties. Brings back a lot of memories to see that there.
It wasn't owned by a smoker. I have lots of old tech I owned back in the day and it looks like new. A lot of old computers, game consoles, and other electronics go up for sale because their owners who were smokers didn't live to be that old. Nicotine is the primary reason older stuff like that turns a nasty yellow brown.
@@kg4boj You are wrong about that. I have several pieces of old tech that yellow over the ages. And, you guessed it, I'm a non-smoker. It's the flame retardant in the plastics that react to UV, which cause the plastics to yellow, or even get brown depending on the exposure length and type of materials used. With peroxide you can bleach the colored plastics back to white, whatever color they where before exposure.
Still a brilliant video. Amazing to think that that giant piece of space memorabilia is so overlooked. Kinda makes you wonder what other treasures of the past might be hiding in plane sight.
I ***loved*** my day at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. I'd wanted most of my adult life to go there and finally got the chance about nine years ago. I drove there before it opened in the morning and they had to ask me to leave when it closed. If they hadn't thrown me out I'd have still been there the next day :-)
The "Midway" aircraft carrier (now a museum in San Diego), also has a clear-plastic model on display. About 12 feet long (if memory serves), it was also used to plan construction details of the ship.
I don’t often get disoriented by images of things pointed “upside down” in space, but the images at 2:07 really made some part of my brain nervous at the image of a “nosediving plane”
I spent a long time looking at that space shuttle landing map when I was in Huntsville for ThinkerCon. I thought it was fascinating and quite detailed.
Thanks for reminding me the Space Shuttle could land. Holy shit, that's awesome. It's kinda sad that it didn't actually work financially. But at least now we have rockets that land which is even cooler. I'm actually going to the technic museum in Speyer, Germany soon, where they have the Buran, the Russian version of the Space Shuttle. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
@Ukrainian Crematorium Actually the Buran "Orbiter K1" did fly to space and complete 2 orbits around the Earth, then came back and landed. All of this AUTONOMOUSLY ! The Buran had no cosmonauts on board but took off and landed on it's own, in 1988 Sadly it was it's first and only flight
@@Ivan-qf1lj This is not correct. There were a number of the orbiters built to various stages of completion, scattered throughout Russia and the world today; but the orbiter OK-1K1 did fly an autonomous mission and landed back to Earth. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the collapse of a hanger where it was shelved since the mission. The one in Speyer is a testbed for aerodynamic flight (OK-GLI), and so it features jet engines to create takeoff. It looks like the Soviets were pretty well invested into the Buran family of shuttles, but shelved it due to the collapse of the USSR, as well as it primarily being created to compete with America.

What's the see-through cylinder model on the drawers behind Ed and Tom? And what's with the French provincial footstool next to it? That's just too unexpected not to ask about!
I remember in the early days of the shuttle (not sure about later launches) one of the things they reported in the news was the number of thermal tiles the shuttle lost. I'm thinking maybe because anything over a certain number it became unsafe to attempt reentry.
I wonder if they still have the Shuttle simulator cabin from 1983's Space Camp era? My crew burned up on re-entry due to... a damaged tile that we didn't space walk to try and fix. Oh the trauma.

@@zengargoyle Don't get me wrong, the shuttle sim was still there but it was in a temporary building (I think, it was a while ago) and the dorm was, for lack of a better description, a bomb shelter. I don't remember if the old one was called Atlantis) and a giant tank for underwater training. If only I could have waited another couple years.
Heard back from Space Camp people. Records pre '89 were all handwritten paper and such. Probably buried in a box in the basement if they even still exist. :(

Thanks for letting me tag along, Brady, and thanks to all the team at the Rocket Center! This was a fantastic place to visit.
Tag along? You made it possible for us to even make both videos! Saved the day.

How jealous was Matt that he didn't get to go?
Tom, not a celebrity? Riiiiight
Tom Scott he did not complete the explanation about the change to the thermal protection system.
Now I want to see Matt's reaction to this. Amount of DING's would be enormous.

Destin actually lives in Huntsville, Alabama (where this is at) so I'm sure he's seen it all!

It's outstanding how the transparent model didn't get yellow or opaque over time. That's NASA materials for you.
That, and proper storage?
TheNasaDude I think the yellowing is a result of UV degradation . If it’s properly stored it won’t yellow

And when it comes to conquering space, the shuttle was a worthy challenger.
Wow - I'm 202 miles from Huntsville (Lithonia, GA). Would love to visit this archive.
I think the gloves here aren't used to protect the object from damage like usual, but to protect the hands from the dust the shuttle collected xD
what dust? i would think its a replacement thermo panel that was never used .As he said , still in the original plastic wraping.
